4 The Fitzpatrick Scale The Fitzpatrick Classification Scale categorizes different skin tones into 6 types, based on each type s behavior when exposed to UV light.

5 The Fitzpatrick Scale Type I: Pale white skin, blond or red hair, blue eyes, freckles Always burns, never tans Type II: Fair skin, blond or red hair; blue, green, or hazel eyes Usually burns, tans minimally Type III: Cream to olive skin; fair to medium with any hair or eye color Sometimes burns, then tans easily Type IV: Light to moderate brown; brown or black hair and eyes Rarely burns, always tans well Type V: Dark brown skin, hair, and eyes Very rarely burns, tans very easily Type VI: Deeply pigmented dark brown to black skin, hair, eyes Never burns, tans very easily

6 Fitzpatrick Type 1 Pale white skin, blond or red hair, blue eyes, freckles Always burns, never tans Often of Scandinavian, Celtic, or other Northern European descent Prone to hyperpigmentation and rosacea Prone to sensitivity and dryness easily irritated Typically thinner skin Avoid: Harsh exfoliants like AHAs or scrubs Highly active products, even botanical extracts and high concentrations of essential oils can cause sensitization Synthetic fragrances, foaming cleansers Focus on: Photo by Timothy Marsee Simple formulations Humectant (water attracting) ingredients like aloe vera, glycerine, hyaluronic acid Emollient (moisturizing and protective) ingredients like shea butter, jojoba oil Anti-inflammatory ingredients like green tea, calendula, chamomile Sunscreen choose FDA-approved non-nano zinc oxide and titanium dioxide-based sunscreens

7 Fitzpatrick Type 2 Two Types of Type 2 Fair skin, blond or red hair; blue, green, or hazel eyes Usually burns, tans minimally Often of Western and Central European descent follow Fitz 1 guidelines for these Fitz 2s Eastern Asian women are also typically classified as Fitz 2 Very delicate, sensitive skin Prone to hyperpigmentation not just freckles, but also sun and age spots, melasma Asian skin has more UVprotective melanin pigment than caucasian skin (even if it appears the same shade to the eye), but due to genetics Asian women are more prone to pigmentary disorders Thinner stratum corneum more prone to scarring, but thicker dermis more collagen, slower skin aging Common skin combination oily/dehydrated. Asian skin is prone to oiliness, but also trans-epidermal water loss (TEWL) Prone to acne By Bold Content By jingdianmeinv1

8 Avoid: Fitzpatrick Type 2 Harsh exfoliants like AHAs or scrubs Highly active products, even botanical extracts and high concentrations of essential oils can cause sensitization Synthetic fragrances, foaming cleansers Hydroquinone (very commonly found in formulations for skin whitening/brightening) Harsh acne ingredients like retinol, salicylic acid, or benzoyl peroxide these are too strong for delicate Asian skin and could increase dehydration, sensitivity, and exacerbate pigmentation issues Overly drying or astringent ingredients like alcohol or witch hazel Focus on: Glycerine-based extracts instead of alcohol extracts much gentler! Humectants Hydrosols and green or white tea as a toner Essential fatty acids/emollients to help seal in moisture Use a combination of emulsions and anhydrous products (products containing water underneath, then sealed in with balms, butters, salves, oil serums) If brightening ingredients are to be used, look for more gentle herbal ones like bilberry, licorice extract, bearberry, alpha arbutin Sunscreen choose FDA-approved non-nano zinc oxide and titanium dioxide-based sunscreens

9 Fitzpatrick Type 3 Cream to olive skin; fair to medium with any hair or eye color Sometimes burns, then tans easily Often of Eastern European or Mediterranean descent, sometimes Middle Eastern or North African Prone to oily skin and acne, though dryness and dehydration can occur from overcleansing and overexfoliation Prone to hyperpigmentation from overexposure to the sun, as well as postinflammatory hyperpigmentation Avoid: Overuse of harsh exfoliants like AHAs or scrubs Synthetic fragrances, foaming cleansers Comedogenic (pore clogging) ingredients Focus on: Natural, non-comedogenic plant emollients like jojoba oil, argan oil, shea butter that naturally balance sebum levels Gentle fruit enzymes for gentle exfoliation Clay masques French green clay or rhassoul clay are my personal favorites blended with lavender and frankincense essential oils and rose hydrosol Oil and lotion cleansers, as well as gentle foaming cleansers either castile soap or coco glucose-based Sunscreen choose FDA-approved non-nano zinc oxide and titanium dioxide-based sunscreens even though Fitz 3 burns less, it s not immune to damage from the sun!

10 Fitzpatrick Type 4 Light to moderate brown; brown or black hair and eyes Rarely burns, always tans well Often of Middle Eastern, Hispanic/Latin American, West Asian, Native American, or North African descent Prone to oily skin and acne, though dryness and dehydration can occur from overcleansing and overexfoliation Prone to post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, melasma, and acne scarring pigmentation issues are worsened by sun exposure Avoid: Overuse of harsh exfoliants like AHAs or scrubs Synthetic fragrances, foaming cleansers Comedogenic (pore clogging) ingredients Focus on: Photo credit Alatele fr ANTI-INFLAMMATORY is the biggest goal! Herbal extracts like lavender, rooibos tea, green tea, calendula to reduce the underlying inflammation Natural, non-comedogenic plant emollients like jojoba oil, argan oil, shea butter that naturally balance sebum levels Gentle fruit enzymes for gentle exfoliation Clay masques Bentonite or rhassoul clay Oil and lotion cleansers, as well as gentle foaming cleansers either castile soap or coco glucose-based Sunscreen choose FDA-approved non-nano zinc oxide and titanium dioxide-based sunscreens this is mostly to prevent dark spots from getting darker

11 Fitzpatrick Types 5 and 6 Dark brown to black skin, hair, and eyes Very rarely or never burns, tans very easily Typically African, South Asian, Caribbean/South Pacific Islands, South American descent Most prone to post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, hypertrophic or keloid scarring, melasma, folliculitis due to curved hair follicles Also prone to eczema and seborrheic dermatitis Skin trauma is less visibly detectable due to darker pigmentation Post-traumatic expression might also manifest as hypo pigmentation (loss of pigment) in some areas AKA vitiligo Note that even though these types have the most natural sun protection, they are not immune to melanoma and melanoma is often detected too late for treatment because it s harder to see. Sunscreens and certain emulsifiers can cause ashiness oils and butters are better for moisture, and combination moisturizer/sunscreens blend better into darker skin tones than straight sunscreens. 12 Avoid: Fitzpatrick Type 5 and 6 Alpha and beta hydroxy acids, melanin/tyrosinase inhibitors Harsh scrubs or scrubbing brushes even the smallest skin fissure can cause pigmentation issues or even scarring Synthetic fragrances or other known skin irritants Focus on: Anti-inflammatory herbs, plant emollients Humectants to keep skin hydrated The oil cleansing oil is actually really effective for Fitz 5 and 6 oils from native plants are especially effective kalahari ootanga, tamanu, baobab oils Naturally antimicrobial ingredients like aloe vera, tea tree oil, lavender Sun protection either a low SPF sunscreen or protective clothing

13 The Cosmetics Industry Doesn t Adequately Serve Women of Color! Believe it or not, this isn t common information in the world of aesthetics or cosmetics I actually didn t learn about the needs of different skin tones until I took a post-grad class on the subject! Many women of color have already experienced challenges and frustrations with Fitz type-specific skin issues, which typical products on the market don t effectively address. Examples: Skin brightening products cause more inflammation which causes more hyperpigmentation Acne products tend to be very drying which can be damaging to already drier Asian and Fitz Types 4-6 Many hyperpigmentation and acne products and protocols recommend harsh AHAs and scrubs, which aggravate melanin-producing cells and lead to more pigment issues Many acne products are water-based and don t provide any skin protection

14 Using This Information Will Make Your Clients Love You!(and You ll Feel Great About it Too! Knowing where to go for skincare solutions specifically for their skin type AND skin tone is a huge relief to women who have had issues in the past Even lighter skin tones like Fitz 1 can t always consume regular skincare products even the ones intended for sensitive skin When a client has experienced pain, sadness, or hopelessness because typical acne or other generic type-specific products haven t worked, and then they find a solution that actually works because it s a more targeted approach, without causing other skin side effects? That s like finding a unicorn.
