Nature gives you the face you have at twenty. Life shapes the face you have at thirty. But at fifty you get the face you deserve. - Coco Chanel Proper Skin Care Through The Decades Everyone wants to keep his or her skin looking young and healthy. Happily, proper skin care isn t difficult, provided that you follow some common-sense rules. Start while you re young, and you re likely to eliminate skin problems that otherwise might occur in your later years. Here are 7 simple life tips to help everyone prevent pre-mature aging. Get enough sleep. Your cells including skin cells -- regenerate during sleep, reversing the damage that UV rays and pollutants cause during the day. Plus, your metabolic rate is slower when you re asleep, so you don t produce as many free radicals, which can damage the skin. Don t smoke. Like lack of sleep, smoking increases the free radicals in your body. Free radicals, in turn, produce enzymes that break down collagen, leaving the skin less elastic. The result: You are more likely to develop wrinkles and leathery skin. Eat a healthy diet. A well-balanced diet includes omega-3, 6 and 9 fatty acids and food rich in antioxidants to protect you from disease and to slow the aging process. They help promote healthy skin, hair and nails. Eliminate or cut down on sugar, which bind to proteins and hasten signs of aging. Instead of sugar, opt for fruits and vegetables that contain anti-oxidants, to break down free radicals and prevent them from damaging cells. Exercise. Exercise keeps blood flowing to all parts of your body, nourishing your cells. And better circulation means healthier, vibrant skin. Your cells will regenerate faster if you exercise, and you ll also reduce stress, which can sabotage healthy skin. Drink enough water stay hydrated. Don t use soap on your face. Soap s harsh chemicals can strip your face of all its natural oils, leaving it unprotected and causing more rapid aging. 4
You live longer once you realize that any time spent being unhappy is wasted. - Ruth E. Renkl Proper Skin Care Through The Decades Use sunscreen daily. This is the best thing you can do to keep your skin young and healthy-looking. Studies show that 90 percent of facial aging is caused by UV rays and radiation. Protect yourself by applying sunscreen daily and reapply every two hours if you re spending time in the sun. Choose an oil-free sunblock if your skin is prone to acne, or one that contains added moisturizers if your skin is dry. 5
Iʼve never seen a smiling face that was not beautiful. - Unknown Skin Types Each of us has different skin characteristics that suggest we have a certain skin type. The cosmetics industry generally describes skin as normal, oily, dry, or combination. Some skin care products or systems include sensitive skin, and others include a category for aging or sun-damaged skin. But these various categories can be misleading because your skin isn t static. Your skin can change according to the season, the weather, and your emotional state. You may have oily or combination skin in the summer, but normal to dry skin in the winter. Hormones and medications also can affect the way your skin looks and feels. So, too, can the products you use. You might be over-moisturizing or over-exfoliating, using irritating or drying products, or simply using products inappropriate for your skin. That doesn t necessarily mean you need to change the products you re using. Instead, you might want to use less of one product, or more of another. So how should you treat your skin? Here are products you should avoid: Bar soaps and bar cleansers. Both can artificially make skin dry and irritated. Occlusive moisturizers that can clog pores and make breakouts worse. Skin-care products that contain irritating ingredients, including astringents and toners loaded with alcohol and other potentially irritating ingredients. Also, beware of buying products based solely on your age. Yes, skin has a tendency to dry up as you age. But plenty of young women have dry skin, and plenty of older women have oily skin. So don t stock up on emollients just because you re aging. Here are the skin-care basics you should use: A water-soluble cleanser: Avoid using eye makeup remover or wipe-off cleanser; pulling at the eye stretches the skin and makes it sag. The cleanser you choose will depend on your skin type. Oily skin: Use a gel wash, which helps dissolve oil, makeup, and sunscreen. Normal skin: Use a foaming lotion cleanser 6
You can take no credit for beauty at sixteen. But if you are beautiful at sixty, it will be your soulʼs own doing. - Marie Stopes Skin Types Dry or sensitive skin: Use a gentle, creamy cleanser. An exfoliating product: a scrub such as baking soda or an AHA product. A disinfectant if you have blemishes (such as 3 percent hydrogen peroxide or benzoyl peroxide) or an irritant-free toner if you don't. Use a moisturizer or non-greasy lotion during the day and make sure it contains a sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or a foundation that contains an SPF of 15. If your skin is oily, simply skip the moisturizer. Use it only when your skin feels dry, particularly around the eye area. Beware, however, that the dryness isn t caused by other skin-care products. In that case, stop using those products. There are skin care basics for every age, beginning with infants. Subtle but essential -- shifts in how we approach our beauty ritual are required as we move from one decade to another. 7
I donʼt like standard beauty - there is no beauty without strangeness. - Karl Lagerfeld Infants and Children You baby s skin is delicate, so here are some tips to keep your baby healthy and happy, and his or her skin free of irritation. Choose skin-care products designed for babies, made with organic ingredients. Avoid products with dyes, fragrance, phthalates and parabens. Products with fragrances and synthetic chemicals can overwhelm a baby s sensitive respiratory system. In general, avoid using powders. Inhaling them can make it difficult for your baby to breathe. If you do use powder, put it in your hand and then apply it, rather than shaking the fine grains into the air. Unless your baby s skin is dry, lotions aren t necessary. Babies don t need daily baths. Two or three times a week is sufficient to avoid dehydrating their sensitive skin. Diaper rash has several causes: Tight diapers or wet diapers left on too long can irritate the skin. The best cure for diaper rash is some time without a diaper, to allow air to circulate. If that doesn t work, choose organic salves that contain beeswax or lanolin instead of creams with chemicals. Keep your baby out of direct sunlight for the first six months of life. Remember that UV rays can damage the skin at all times even on cold, winter days. So use a strong baby sunscreen, hats, and umbrellas. Don t forget sunglasses to protect your child s eyes. You can also use zinc oxide or titanium dioxide on baby's nose, ears, and lips. Unlike chemical sunscreens, these aren t absorbed by the skin, so they are less likely to irritate the baby s skin. 8
Nature gives you the face you have at twenty. Life shapes the face you have at thirty. But at fifty you get the face you deserve. - Coco Chanel Teen Skin Care The skin damage that teens experience can lead to fine lines, wrinkles and even skin cancer years later. When it comes to our skin, we know that the sun plays a larger role in aging us than our genes do. Sure, it s tempting to tan, but here are the facts: One bad sunburn can significantly increase the chances for melanoma in later years. Freckles are also evidence of sun damage. So use sunscreen with a minimum SPF 15, and don t forget to reapply. Teens, of course, run the added peril of acne. If oily skin is a problem, use a gel-based cleanser. If your skin is prone to acne, look for ingredients such as salicyclic acid and benzoyl peroxide. Avoid the temptation to pop your pimples. Picking at pimples can cause scarring, so keep your fingers away from your face. In general, teens will use the same regimen as adults: Cleanser Moisturizer A mask and exfoliator. The mask deep cleans your pores, while an exfoliator removes the top layer of dead skin cells. During your teen years is when your skin care regime should become automatic just like brushing your teeth. 9
You live longer once you realize that any time spent being unhappy is wasted. - Ruth E. Renkl Women in their 20s The earlier you start taking care of your skin, the better it will look in the future. The bottom-line is that you shouldn't take your skin for granted. Prevention is key to looking good in your 30s, 40s and beyond. Cleanse your face twice a day with warm water. Avoid either hot or cold temperatures. TIP: Wash your face after you shower. That way, the residue left from your body soap, shampoo and conditioner won t remain on your face. Apply an oil-free moisturizer with SPF to protect your skin from the sun and from future wrinkles. Young skin tends to have plenty of natural oils, so women in their 20s may have to moisturize only once a day. If you have oily skin, apply an alcohol-free toner after cleansing and before you apply moisturizer. Toners tighten the pores and restore ph balance to the skin while cleaning it of excess cleanser and makeup. Also, choose facial products with ingredients such as salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide to fight whiteheads, blackheads, and acne. Be careful to avoid harsh toners that can set your sebaceous glands into overdrive and make your skin greasier. If you have sensitive skin, ask your dermatologist to recommend appropriate products. Just because a product is marketed for sensitive skin does not mean it will work for your particular problem. Use a facial exfoliator. Apply from one to three times per week, depending on your skin type and sensitivity. The exfoliator will get rid of dull, dead skin cells and encourage healthy new skin to shine through. A weekly mask will also deep clean your pores, leaving you with diminished oil and reduced pore size. Tips that go beyond facial skin: Neck: Now s the time to get into the habit of using a cream on your neck, which is one of the first places to show your age. Hands: It s never too early to start using hand cream. Ideally, seek out a hand cream with an SPF 15. Preventing age spots, lines and wrinkles is infinitely easier than cure. 10
Iʼve never seen a smiling face that was not beautiful. - Unknown Women in their 30s Your skin care needs are more likely to fluctuate in your 30s, as you enter a period of life that can include pregnancy, post-natal, and associated hormonal fluctuations. All of these can affect your skin-care requirements. In addition, your skin can present sensitivities caused by synthetic chemical skin care or harsh exfoliating treatments such as alpha hydroxy acids. Collagen and elastin fibers begin to break down in your 30s. You might notice more freckles coming to the surface of your skin -- the result of sunbathing without sunscreen when you were a teenager. Lifestyle plays a roll, of course, but this is the decade when skin begins to thin and dry out. An anti-aging cream may feel too rich; consider a serum, instead. They re lighter than creams and typically packed with ingredients such as retinol, vitamin C, antioxidant and peptides. Not all of these ingredients have been clinically tested, but research has shown that vitamin C and retinol boost collagen production, which can decrease the appearance of wrinkles. Here s the skin-care regimen for your 30s: Cleanser: In the morning, use a cleanser with alpha hydroxy acids to encourage exfoliation. In the evening, wash with a creamy cleanser. And once you re in your 30s, make sure your cream or serum contains retinol. Moisturizer: In addition to SPF 15 or 20 with UVA/UVB protection, your moisturizer should contain antioxidants, such as green or white tea, pomegranate or vitamin C, to protect your skin from free radicals. Eye cream: By your 30s, you re likely showing fine lines around your eyes. It s time to start wearing an eye cream daily. For dark circles, use one with hydroquinone, vitamin C or botanicals that brighten, like kojic acid, soy, or licorice. 11
You can take no credit for beauty at sixteen. But if you are beautiful at sixty, it will be your soulʼs own doing. - Marie Stopes Women in their 30s If your eyes are puffy, look for a cream with caffeine. For extra moisturization, use one with hyaluronic acid. Exfoliate: In your 30s, don t exfoliate more than twice a week and, as skin thins, from 40 onward, once a week is sufficient to keep skin vibrant. 12
I donʼt like standard beauty - there is no beauty without strangeness. - Karl Lagerfeld Women in their 40s Women in their 40s face a host of new skin concerns, which may include the first signs of menopause. Menopause not only affects estrogen levels but also the very structure of the skin. The good news is, it s never too late to start caring for your skin even if you re in your 40s and beyond. Here are some of the obstacles you re likely to face at 40, and recommended treatments: Your skin starts to lose elasticity in your 40s especially around the eyes. All 40- something women should wear an eye cream to nourish and protect the delicate skin around the eyes. Your skin will be drier than it was in your 30s. You may want to introduce richer, more deeply moisturizing ingredients or even facial oils into your nighttime regime. If your skin has always been on the dry side, add a replenishing night cream as well. Choose creams that contain hyaluronic acid, petrolatum, shea butter or oils. Collagen and elastin begin to break down, making your skin less elastic. That can lead to sagging skin. If your facial features are becoming less firm, you may want to investigate creams that boast a specific firming action. Alternatively, yoga is an excellent way to keep a chin and neck firm. Your skin retains less moisture and loses some of its glow. You might even see blotchiness, red spots and ruddiness the cumulative effects of sun damage. If you avoided the sun in and before your 20s and 30s, you ll reap the benefits of that choice you ll show far less damage than those who soaked up the rays. Women in their 40s may have extremely sensitive skin, the result of synthetic chemical skin care, harsh exfoliating treatments or aggressive treatments, such as peels. Additionally, skin can become more sensitive as a woman approaches menopause. 13
Nature gives you the face you have at twenty. Life shapes the face you have at thirty. But at fifty you get the face you deserve. - Coco Chanel Women in their 40s You may notice feathering around the lip zone. If so, add an anti-ageing lip product into your skin-care regime. Such products keep the area soft, supple and plumped up. You could also opt for an anti-feathering lip pencil, which prevents lipstick from traveling into lines. Your skin-care regimen for the 40s: Cleanser: Use a creamy cleanser morning and night. If you can tolerate one with a mild AHA or salicylic acid, apply that once a day. Moisturizer: Supplement your broad-spectrum moisturizer with a couple of creams, lotions or serums that contain at least two types of antioxidants. Look for lycopene, green tea or soy, and use each product on alternating days. You'll benefit from switching off, because different antioxidants address different problems. Or, if your skin is beginning to look crepey, try a formula with peptides. Peptides have been shown to stimulate the production of collagen. Nighttime treatment: Many dermatologists recommend a prescription retinoid. Retinoids increase exfoliation and collagen production, while reducing pore size and brown spots. If your skin can't tolerate a retinoid every night, use it every other night. Exfoliate: If you don t already exfoliate regularly, get into the habit now. This is the decade when the outer layer of the epidermis starts to grow thicker as dead skin cells hang around longer. Exfoliating can help your skin looking fresh. 14
You live longer once you realize that any time spent being unhappy is wasted. - Ruth E. Renkl Women in their 50s Changes to Anticipate Dryness and loss of elasticity are the most significant changes you ll see in your 50s. Lines around the eyes, on the forehead, and running from the nose to the mouth won t disappear when you stop smiling or squinting. As you experience menopause, your estrogen levels will drop, thinning your skin and making it more fragile. Along with your eyelids, the skin on the throat and décolletage may take on even more of the crepey appearance you began noticing in your 40s. Pores will be more visible, especially on your nose and cheeks. Likely, you ll have developed spider veins and age spots from the sun. Recommended Treatments Your best bet is to step up your sun protection. It s never too late to stop the progression of damage. Careful sun protection in your 50s will fade age spots as much or better than most products will. Apply sun screen daily, and wear a big hat and massive sunglasses in the summertime. You ll want to adopt a layered skin-care regimen. That is, combine a serum with a moisturizing cream. Creams are a mixture of oil and water, so they moisturize better than serums. Serums are water-based, so they are easier for the skin to absorb. That makes serums the best carrier for active anti-aging ingredients, such as vitamins, antioxidants, peptides and marine extracts. For the best results, you should apply the serum first, allow a minute or two for it to sink in, then nourish your skin with a richer cream. You ll want to add wrinkle-removing cream to your regimen, as well as anti-aging products. But avoid harsh products such as exfoliating cleansers (once a week buffing is enough), water-based cream and gel cleansers (too drying) and peels (skin is already too delicate for these). Avoid any fresheners with alcohol because they will dry out your skin. Rosewater is one good option. 15
Iʼve never seen a smiling face that was not beautiful. - Unknown Women in their 50s Skin-care regimen for the 50s: Cleanser: Wash morning and night with a non-soap cleanser or a creamy, foaming one. Moisturizer: Apply a serum containing peptides or an antioxidant like vitamin C when your face is still damp. Then apply a broad-spectrum moisturizer containing SPF 15 or 20, with UVA/UVB protection. Nighttime treatment: Try a prescription retinoid, which is more moisturizing than others. 16
You can take no credit for beauty at sixteen. But if you are beautiful at sixty, it will be your soulʼs own doing. - Marie Stopes Women in their 60s The 60s don t introduce any new skin issues. But those that started in your 40s and 50s will be exacerbated. Gravity s effects on the eyelids, neck and jawline become more pronounced. Wrinkles and lines that appeared years earlier will now be deeper. Age spots will also be more noticeable. The good news: If you ve suffered through oily skin for decades, you ll show fewer lines and wrinkles than a woman with a history of dry skin. Also, if you made a habit of protecting your skin from the sun, your wrinkles, veins and dark spots will be less pronounced. You also can improve the appearance of your skin by increasing your intake of foods rich in vitamin A and vitamin E. Both promote new cell growth in the surface layers of the skin, helping it to appear more radiant. Foods rich in vitamin A include sweet potatoes, carrots, mango, spinach, cantaloupe, dried apricots, milk, egg yolks, and mozzarella cheese. Foods rich in vitamin E include nuts, oils, fruits, vegetables, and eggs. It s also wise to increase your intake of healthy fat. Add a tablespoon or two of cod liver oil or ground flax seed to your morning smoothie. Make sure you eat wild salmon, grass-fed beef, or organic free-range chicken three times a week. NOTE: Don't let skin cancer sneak up on you. Once you reach your 60s, you should visit your dermatologist at least once a year for a skin cancer checkup. The older you get, the more chance that too much sun and too little sunscreen will take a toll on your skin. As with most cancers, skin cancer can be most effectively treated if caught early. 17
I donʼt like standard beauty - there is no beauty without strangeness. - Karl Lagerfeld Women in their 60s Your skin care routine: Cleanser: Use a gentle cleanser formulated for dry skin. Don t overdo it, but be aware that your skin cells take longer to renew themselves, so cleansing is more important than ever. Eye cream: Use a hydrating eye cream formulated for the sensitive skin around your eyes, once in the morning and once at night. Nighttime treatment: Include a rich, hydrating face cream with a high concentration of oils. Hydrate: Drink plenty of water to hydrate skin from the inside out. You can also use an alcohol-free mist during the day to help balance your PH. Exfoliate: Don t exfoliate aggressively, because you could damage skin that is getting thinner as you age. But the slower rate of skin renewal means a potential buildup of dead skin cells. That can amplify the appearance of wrinkles and keep moisturizers from penetrating. So be sure to exfoliate once a week. 18
Nature gives you the face you have at twenty. Life shapes the face you have at thirty. But at fifty you get the face you deserve. - Coco Chanel Women in their 70s Women face few surprises in their 70s, as their skin continues aging: age spots increase in number, skin continues to sag and lines become deeper. However, if you ve cared for your skin over the years, you can be enjoying the benefits of those efforts. Along with good skin care, women in their 70s who have a healthy complexion attribute it to good diet, exercise, and keeping mentally active. Of course, this a great recipe for good skin for women of any age. Add adequate sleep and a positive attitude, and you ll be pleased at how good your skin looks, no matter your age. 19
You live longer once you realize that any time spent being unhappy is wasted. - Ruth E. Renkl Tips for Men Don t worry, Men. You don t need a multitude of products, but experts do recommend some essentials: Cleanse (simple cleanser) Tone Exfoliate (2-3x per week) Moisturize (with sunscreen) Happily, all-in-one products can reduce the time you spend on skin care. Some products include day, night, eye cream and anti-aging wrinkle creams -- all in one pump. Such pumps provide everything you need for healthy skin without cluttering your bathroom. Wash your face: Men s skin is about 15 percent oilier than a woman s. Their pores are also significantly larger. That means men get dirtier. So no matter what skin type you have, clean your face every day. It will keep you looking good. No soapy face wash: Stop using body soap on your face. Soaps tend to be harsh and dry out your face, stripping it of essential oils. Plus, using body soap on your face is cumulative your skin suffers more the longer you do it. Instead, after your shower, follow up with a moisturizer. Use a shaving gel instead of foam. You want to condition your skin before shaving to soften the hair and hair follicle. Look for gel-based shaving creams that instantly lubricate and hydrate, so that the razor glides easily across the skin, lessening irritation, rashes and ingrown hairs. Diet: Our skin reveals what is going on inside our bodies. So skip the chips and dip while watching the game on Sunday, and choose vegetables instead. If you're prone to breakouts, figure out what you ate within those 24 hours that could have affected your skin. Sometimes simply paying attention helps you make small changes. 20
