1 Using the Foglight Cartridge for IBM WebSphere MQ Server The Cartridge for IBM WebSphere MQ Server enables Foglight to monitor a distributed IBM WebSphere MQ infrastructure. You can achieve better management of services when you are alerted of infrastructure problems before end users are affected. This enables you to ensure consistent application performance at established service levels. The Foglight Cartridge for IBM WebSphere MQ Server monitors the health of the messaging system by tracking MQ objects, such as queue managers, queues, channels, and listener processes. The Cartridge for IBM WebSphere MQ Server contains two major components: MQ dashboards provide at-a-glance views of your IBM WebSphere MQ performance. The top-level dashboard is a visual representation of the status of the major components of the MQAgent instances. It allows you to ensure consistent application performance. For more information, see Exploring the MQ Dashboards on page 7. MQAgents monitor IBM WebSphere MQ objects such as queue managers, queues, channels, and listener processes. The agents collect information from the monitored hosts and sends it to the Management Server. Exploring the MQ Dashboards When you deploy the Cartridge for IBM WebSphere MQ Server, the monitoring dashboards enable you to view your IBM WebSphere MQ performance. The dashboards are a visual representation of the status of the major components of the MQAgent instances that allow you to ensure consistent application performance. You can drill down for details, from looking at highlevel information about each queue manager, to viewing its specifics: such as the queue depth, the number of messages in the queue, or the number of bytes sent using a particular channel. In addition to the MQ dashboards, MQ objects also appear in the Application Tier, which allows you to monitor them using the Foglight Service Operations Console. Use this dashboard to customize a service to include specific MQ objects. For example, a banking application can use a specific DB2 database and a specific MQ queue. These two components can be grouped into a service that causes the alarms related to all the objects included in the service to be grouped together in the Service Operations Console. For more information about the Service Operations

Foglight Cartridge for IBM WebSphere MQ Server User and Reference Guide 8 Chapter 1 Using the Foglight Cartridge for IBM WebSphere MQ Server Console, see the Foglight User Guide. For details about object groups and tiers, see the Foglight Administration and Configuration Guide. From the MQ Queue Manager dashboard you can see detailed information about the queues, channels, alarms, events, and listeners associated with a specific queue manager, and from the MQ Cluster dashboard, you can view the server infrastructure and user-created object status. To access the MQ dashboards: On the navigation panel, under Homes, click either MQ Cluster or MQ Queue Manager. The selected dashboard appears in the display area. In addition, a navigation tree appears on the navigation panel, as shown below. Expand the MQGroup node in the navigation tree to view a list of the monitored MQ Queue Managers or Clusters. You can use this tree as an alternative to navigate to the related dashboard. Select the MQGroup in the navigation tree to view all queue managers in that group. The top part of the group view contains a table listing the available queue managers, while the bottom part shows information about the selected queue manager, including: event status, dead letter queue depth, the connection count, and more information. Viewing an MQ Group The MQ Group view gives you an at-a-glance view of the monitored queue managers. It shows the current and historical health of individual queue managers, along with historical queue capacities for the purposes of monitoring and planning. It contains two parts: 1 Queue Manager Table lists the queue managers in one of three ways: monitored, unmonitored, or all queue managers. For each queue manager, the table includes its name, any alarms associated with it, the name of the computer hosting the queue manager, its availability, and the names of any related clusters. 2 Detail Properties contains status and metric information for the selected queue manager.

Foglight Cartridge for IBM WebSphere MQ Server User and Reference Guide 9 Chapter 1 Using the Foglight Cartridge for IBM WebSphere MQ Server Select a queue manager in the table to populate the Detail Properties view with metrics, such as the status of events associated with the queue manager, the names of its dead-letter and command queues, the depth of the dead-letter queue (DLQ) plotted over time, and the number of connections to the queue manager, also plotted over time. For detailed information about the views appearing on this dashboard, see Chapter 2, Views on page 14. Monitoring Queue Managers A queue is an object used to store messages. MQ applications use queues to store and retrieve messages. Each queue is managed by a queue manager. A queue manager provides queuing services to applications, and manages the queues that belong to it. Channels enable the communication between queue managers. They are used in distributed message queuing to move messages from one queue manager to another. Listeners accept incoming network requests from remote queue managers, or client applications. Important After establishing a connection to the queue manager, if the listener is stopped, the agent associated with the queue manager continues to maintain its connection to the listener port and to collect data. MQ events provide information about errors, warnings, or similar occurrences that are associated with queue managers, channels, or applications. For each queue manager, Foglight collects diagnostic information about its message queues, channels, listeners, and events, and generates alarms when predefined thresholds are reached. These thresholds are initially defined by the rules that are included with the cartridge.

Foglight Cartridge for IBM WebSphere MQ Server User and Reference Guide 10 Chapter 1 Using the Foglight Cartridge for IBM WebSphere MQ Server The MQ Queue Manager dashboard displays performance metrics for the selected queue manager, including information about queues, channels, alarms, events, and listeners. It gives you detailed information about your MQ environment and its health. To view the MQ Queue Manager dashboard: On the navigation panel, under Homes, click MQ Queue Manager. or Select a queue manager from the MQ Group Infrastructure list in the navigation tree on the navigation panel. Use the Queues tab to view details about individual queues, clustered queues, or non-clustered queues. For example, to see the volume of the incoming data flow for a queue, select it on the Queue tab, and view the contents of the Queue Status view below. The Open Input metric shows the number of applications that are currently connected to the queue and are removing messages from it. Use the Channels tab to view either active channels, or all channels, and their associated details and related queue status. The Alarms, Events, and Listeners tabs list the alarms, events, and listeners associated with the selected queue manager. Use these views to quickly see the state of these entities. For detailed information about the views appearing on this dashboard, see the Chapter 2, Views on page 14. Monitoring MQ Clusters The MQ Clusters dashboard provides an overview of key metrics for clustered queue managers. Use this dashboard to quickly review the status and health of the queue managers, their repository type (Full or Partial), and key metrics such as infrastructure and application message rates, queue

Foglight Cartridge for IBM WebSphere MQ Server User and Reference Guide 11 Chapter 1 Using the Foglight Cartridge for IBM WebSphere MQ Server depth, dead-letter queue depth, and connection counts over time. This dashboard also lists alarms for the entire cluster, grouped by queue manager. To view the MQ Cluster dashboard: On the navigation panel, under Homes, click MQ Cluster. or Select a cluster from the MQ Clusters list in the navigation tree on the navigation panel. To change which cluster you are viewing, click the Cluster Name link (located at the top left corner of the dashboard, just below the dashboard name). Select a cluster from the drop-down list. If the Overview tab indicates that a cluster is performing poorly, use the MQ Server Infrastructure tab to investigate latency, blocks, or other configuration issues. For example, if your MQ cluster is distributed across a large geographic distance, this can result in high latency between queue managers. The MQ Server Infrastructure tab displays performance details for the auto-created sender and receiver channels and infrastructure queues, while the MQ Server Application tab displays the user-created MQ objects. Select any individual queue manager on any tab of this dashboard to examine that queue manager s details in the Queue Managers Group View. For detailed information about the views appearing on this dashboard, see the Chapter 2, Views on page 14.

Foglight Cartridge for IBM WebSphere MQ Server User and Reference Guide 12 Chapter 1 Using the Foglight Cartridge for IBM WebSphere MQ Server Using Action This section describes how to use the registry variable (mail.alias.mq) for sending MQrelated alerts. When an alert is fired by an MQ Object (for example, MQQueue, a queue in the MQ system), the registry values at different scope levels are checked in the following order: 1 Current (for example, MQQueue) 2 Current s parent (MQQueueManager) 3 Parent s parent (MQGroup) 4 Global value The first defined value found is used as the effective registry value. For example, if there is no value defined for MQQueue, and there is a value defined for MQQueueManager, then the value of MQQueueManager is used as the registry value. If no lower-level scope values are found, the global value (if defined) is used. You can define different values for the various scope levels in Foglight. This allows you to specify values relevant to the different queue levels. For example, if one administrator manages the MQQueueManager, while another administrator manages only the MQQueue, you can differentiate between the two by defining different scope level values so that the correct administrator is notified by from the correct MQ Object alert. To define a global value: 1 On the navigation panel, under Dashboards, click Administration > Rules & Notifications > Manage Registry Variable. 2 Locate the mail.alias.mq registry variable entry and click the variable name. Tip To locate the variable quickly, type mail in the Filter by Variable Name box. The Edit Registry Variables view loads. 3 In the Global Default area, type a valid address in the box. Note Foglight does not validate the address. 4 Click Save.

Foglight Cartridge for IBM WebSphere MQ Server User and Reference Guide 13 Chapter 1 Using the Foglight Cartridge for IBM WebSphere MQ Server To add a value to a non-global scope: 1 On the Edit Registry Variable page, click Add Registry Value at the bottom of the page. The Create Registry Value for mail.alias.mq -- Step 1: Select Topology and Default Value view appears. Tip For more information about specifying registry variables, see the Foglight User Help. 2 Select the Topology Type from the list. For example: MQGroup. 3 In the Default Value box, enter a valid address for the scope. 4 Click Add. The Add Performance Calendars view appears. 5 Optional Add a performance calendar. If you want the default value to change over time, add one or more schedules to the performance calendar and specify the value for each schedule. For more information, see the Foglight User Help. 6 Click Done. The Edit Registry Variable view refreshes. The scope value you created appears in the Registry Values box at the bottom of the view.

2 Reference This chapter contains reference information about Views, Rules, and Data tables that are included with the cartridge. Read this chapter to find out details about these components. Views Foglight displays monitoring data in views that group, format, and display data. The main types are described below. Dashboards are top-level views that contain lower-level views. The dashboards supplied with Foglight, as well as those created by users, are accessible from the navigation panel. Lower-level views in Foglight can be added to dashboards or can be accessed by drilling down from a dashboard. They receive and display data directly from the Foglight Management Server or from other views. Some views filter or select data that appears in other views in the same dashboard. Some are tree views with expandable nodes for selecting servers, applications, or data. The Cartridge for IBM WebSphere MQ Server ships with two dashboards, the MQ Queue Manager and MQ Cluster, which help you monitor your MQ environment. Each of these dashboards contains a number of views. The views are described in this section. For more information about the MQ dashboards, see Chapter 1, Exploring the MQ Dashboards on page 7.
