2 DAY 1 a THE BRIDGES AND THE MEDIEVAL VILLAGE AS PONTES DE GARCÍA RODRÍGUEZ Visit this beautiful medieval town which, with the passage of the years, has achieved great importance due to the presence of large deposits of lignite. A few sites that helped set up the particular topography of the place, due to its large open pit mines, today have converted into one of Galicia's largest inland water masses, and to draw the profile of its buildings, presided over today by the huge chimneys of the As Pontes power plant. 3 b INDUSTRIAL VILLAGE OF AS VEIGAS This industrial town, organized around a Civic Center and a recreational area is, in itself, a good example of the application of the principles of the garden city to a company town. Your visit will allow you to visualize its industrial development and understand how the gradual transformation of this small mining town has taken place. The huge cranes and mining machinery, which you will see on its banks, keep the memory of their ancient uses. CASA DO MEL And on the way to the coast, you should stop at Goente. The Casa do Mel (Honey House) Association boasts a beekeeping Outreach Center through which you will know first-hand all the process of honey elaboration, from extraction to processing and packaging. You can try their special uniforms, learn facts about this fantastic species, and admire temporary exhibitions of local craftsmen. It also features playground areas for children destined to the development of workshops and lectures, an exhibition and sale of honey to the public. 4 DAY 2 e EUME S DAM FROM THE TEIXIDO S VIEWPOINT We recommend you not to go without stopping to see the amazing views of the dam of the Eume River and the whole of the Fragas do Eume Natural Park, with the barrel in the V-shape which forms the bed of the River, from this fantastic outlook. You have several ways to climb up to it! From routes that start at the same dam that present great difficulty both descending as well as the danger of some of the sections to a circular route, much shorter and simple, that start in the centre of the small population of Teixido will allow you to reach the highest point. More information: Distance to the next point of visit: 17 km f THE SALTO DA VENTUREIRA AND POWER PLANTS OF EUME S RIVER Also known as A Capelada, this old hydroelectric power plant is located in a magnificent natural setting, in the heart of the Fragas do Eume. At its edge several hiking trails start. One of them will lead you, along the South Bank of the River, to the monastery of Caaveiro, passing near the Central do Eume, and, later, by the small or Parrote Central. EUME S RIVER BRIDGES: PONTEDEUME The village of Pontedeume is located in the estuary of the Eume River, crossed by the bridge which gives it its name, and which was the largest one during the middle ages in Galicia. Discover this tourist centre of great interest, both from the point of view of natural (as a gateway to the Natural Park of the Fragas do Eume) as cultural (with various elements declared of Cultural interest: the Tower of the Counts of Andrade, the historic-artistic ensemble of the Eumesa region...). 6 DAY 3 h MONASTERY OF SAN XOÁN DE CAVEIRO And if you have not hiked the route up there, you cannot leave this town without visiting the ruins of the ancient Romanesque monastery of San Xoán de Caaveiro, accessed by road from Pontedeume. Enjoy its important historical, artistic and cultural value. The remains of these buildings together with the natural setting of the River, between cliffs and with a great diversity of plant and animal species, will make your visit to this monastery an unforgettable experience. The views from the top of A Bailadora (The Dancer) are of great beauty. The entrance to the Ferrol estuary with the city in the background, the San Felipe Castle, A Coruña opposite, the Marola and the coast of Mera, the Lorbé wooden platforms... You will be able to enjoy everything from this strategic enclave in a fraught with strategic point of old batteries and military tunnels that are abandoned today. 7 j MONTEFARO The visit to this building in Renaissance style built in 1393 by the Franciscan Order and later was handed over to Army will not leave you indifferent. The most noteworthy features are the gardens and the two cloisters. However, in the interior of the building you will also see the remains of capitals, statues, tombstones of graves... This is the case of the La Palma Castle, which went through the combat of the English troops in 1596 and the invasion of the village of Mugardos. Visit it! Its last use was as a military prison. Antonio Tejero, one of the main leaders of the attempted coup d ' état on February 23, 1981 in Spain, popularly known as 23F was imprisoned there.
