1 Conero Natural Reserve Itineraries Our itineraries are mainly downhill to help you enjoying the surrounding landscapes. Both tours consist of trekking through evergreen forests typical of the Mediterranean Bush. The walks last around 2 ½ hours including breaks. The Conero is a mountain of 572 meters, which is located on the Adriatic coast. There are 6000 hectares of protected area containing 1/3 of floristic heritage of Marche. At geological level the cliffs of Conero are important because they allow us to read the evolution of the earth. At the historical level: the Conero was inhabited since the Paleolithic (Stone Age 2 million years ago to 10,000 years ago). For sailors and local tribes was important for the orientation (seen from sea or from the ground). Greeks, Romans and Piceni walked on Conero. Its name came from Komaros, in greek arbutus.

2 1. North Side Conero: Saint Peter s Church: Beautiful example of Romanesque of the eleventh century. Built in the typical white stone of the Conero. The church got three aisles; the column has capitals decorated with floral animals elements. Especially in the crypt it s felt the sacredness of the building. The Conero during the Eleven Century was a favourite place by hermits, who prayed contemplating nature. Looking sea had helped to open up the spirit. The church is surrounded by a building that was once a monastery now is a hotel. Pian Raggetti: View point to the hinterland and the south coast of the Conero. Sitting on benches to admire the surrounding landscape. On clear days you can see until the Sibillini Mountains and some days until the Gran Sasso.

3 Rock Engravings: The first settlements of the Marches was on Conero that has been inhabited since the Stone Age (Paleolithic). Here it has been found a slab of limestone with engravings made by smashing stones with harder stones during the Stone Age. Probably used for rituals (sacrificial rituals), some others think that it can be a map of the area dating back to that period.

4 Pian Grande: Natural balcony above Portonovo s bay where you can see the Torre De Bosis (Watchtower, 1700), the Napoleonic Fort ( ), the Deep Lake and Lake Calcagno. From here you can see numerous birds of prey (raptors). A couple of Peregrine Falcons make nest on this cliff. Arrival at Poggio: end of the tour.

6 Belvedere Sud: From where you can admire the Two Sisters s beach (Spiaggia delle Due Sorelle) and the famous Passo del Lupo narrow track which leading to the bay. Mortarolo s Cave: Natural cave located below solid limestone, used by ancient hermitage (place of meditation and prayer of hermits).

7 Passo del Lupo: Arrival at the entrance of the famous trail of the Passo del Lupo formerly used by miners.
