1 Short Courses in Imaging Sciences The Centre for In Vivo Imaging Science (CIVIS) is delighted to offer online Continuing Professional Education to support your educational objectives, career goals and ongoing development. Through the University of Edinburgh, we can now deliver online Continued Professional Development (CPD) courses, online Postgraduate Professional Development (PPD) courses and online degree programmes (MSc/Diploma/Certificate). Whether you are doing just one CPD online course, two online PPD short courses or a full online Masters programme, you will receive the same high standard service that you would expect from an award winning teaching University. Core content has been accredited by the Royal College of Radiologists, and new content has been submitted for approval. Employees can update, and further develop, their knowledge by taking these courses online, where they can study flexibly, whenever it is convenient for them and their employers, from anywhere with an internet connection. This saves employers the inconvenience and costs of releasing employees to study on-campus. The CIVIS group has taught online programmes since 2005, and based on the success and popularity of its courses, has recently expanded and developed new content. A student will have access to all University services and relevant academics; become part of a rich and varied online community and earn an internationally-recognised award, either by gaining a degree or having their PPD credits listed onto their transcript. The student will be able to communicate with experts from the Brain Research Imaging Centre, the Clinical Research Imaging Centre, Heriot-Watt Bioengineering Department and the University s multidisciplinary team of imaging academics directing a wide range of cuttingedge research projects, with an emphasis on translation from bench to bedside. Edinburgh has substantial imaging research strengths, from clinical to laboratory cellular methods. CMVM hosts the largest group of academic radiologists in the UK, two fully occupied research MR scanners, and preclinical imaging research facilities. In addition to the CMVM hosting research groups, complementary equipment, expertise and interest in imaging science exists in other CIVIS member s units, including Neuroscience, Psychology, Informatics, Mathematics, Engineering, Physics, and Biomechanics. 3 Short Courses the difference between CPD and PPD Through offering both Continued Professional Development (unsupervised, non-credit bearing) and Postgraduate Professional Development (supervised, interactive, credit-bearing), CIVIS can offer 17 online short courses in Imaging. Should the student wish, he or she can use the credits gained in their PPD courses to reduce the number of courses required to upgrade to and obtain a postgraduate Certificate, Diploma or Masters. The Postgraduate Professional Development courses (PPD) are taught fully online by experts in their fields. Not only do candidates get the benefit of being supervised by these scientists, they also enjoy learning through online discussion forums with their online course colleagues. The PPD courses are supervised, normally commencing in either September or January, and applications are made through the University s Admission System, EUCLID. Following successful completion of the course, the candidate will be awarded a credit bearing assessment only qualification, which allows the course s credits to be added to their transcript. To apply for PPD courses through EUCLID, please go to: All courses are designed for online, part-time, distance learning study. Each PPD course is split into several modules. Each module (supervised learning) has the following structure: One or more interactive online lectures, outlining the topic, with embedded quizzes Module self-assessments (multiple-choice tests) Resources listing the reading for the module Module discussion board a tutor-moderated discussion around the topic. Each module (self-study) should take between 1-2 weeks: As is usual at this level of study, you will be expected to undertake self-guided independent study of the materials, including lectures and required reading, which will help you structure your reflection time and prepare for assessment. If you require more flexibility to start a course at any time of the year, then you can do our Continued Professional Development (CPD) courses. These are also online, but are unsupervised and can be booked through the University s Office of Lifelong Learning. Whilst these are extremely valuable training courses, they are not credit bearing. 4 Preclinical & Veterinary Imaging Education These courses are specifically aimed at those who wish to work in research & development, preclinical laboratories or wish to increase their knowledge of imaging of animals. Preclinical imaging (10 credits - PPD) This course will cover the basics of preclinical MR, optical, ultrasound, micro-ct and micro-pet imaging, and will re-enforce taught materials with case studies for each modality. Techniques and Physics (20 credits - PPD) This course will give students a basic understanding of imaging history, imaging techniques - both in research and clinically, what an image is and how images are processed and manipulated. Digital Image Processing & Analysis (20 credit - PPD) This course will address in detail the processing and analysis of digital data derived in the imaging environment, including sampling and quantization, perception and modelling, validation techniques, registration techniques, voxel based analysis, and segmentation as well as storage, protection, archiving and mining of image data. 8 Medical Imaging/ Clinical Imaging Education These courses are ideal for clinicians and consultants to ensure that they are aware of the latest technologies available to investigate specific problems. Clinical applications (10 credits - PPD) This course will introduce students to clinical use imaging techniques, describing how best to select a technique to investigate a specific clinical problem, advantages and disadvantages of different approaches, and will review the basic strategies and pitfalls of the various techniques in selected clinical contexts. Techniques and Physics (20 credits - PPD) This course will give students a basic understanding of imaging history, imaging techniques - both in research and clinically, what an image is and how images are processed and manipulated. Image interpretation and evaluation (20 credits - PPD) This course will cover the systematic review of images in the clinical context to assess for both normal and abnormal findings, and will provide guidance on how such findings bear relevance to imaging in the clinical context. It will also explore more detailed gross image evaluation as might be required in the research context e.g. measuring lesion sizes. 10 4. Anatomy (20 credits - PPD) This course aims to make sure that you have a good understanding of basic neuro-anatomy as seen on common imaging techniques. This includes major lobes and fissures, blood vessels, major connecting pathways in the brain and an appreciation of how these might look with different imaging techniques. Cardiovascular imaging (10 credits - PPD) This course will concentrate on practical imaging of the chest, including what techniques are best for evaluating various parts of the chest anatomy, and which are best for investigation of major diseases of the chest. The lungs and heart will be the main focus. Research into cardiac function as well as studies into the vasculature, will also be covered, reflecting activity at the Clinical Research Imaging Centre (CRIC) at the University of Edinburgh. Imaging in inflammation and infection ( 10 credit - PPD) This course will cover the diagnostic strategies and problems associated with infectious and inflammatory diseases of the brain and body. Key disease processes will be used to illustrate principles and approaches. Imaging - Infection and Inflammation Chest Gastro-intestinal Musculoskeletal Neck Neuro 7. Oncologic imaging (10 credits - PPD) This course will cover the diagnostic strategies and problems associated with cancers, including radiological screening methods, staging and follow-up examinations, and imaging the complications of cancers and their treatments. Multimodal approaches to liver, lung, colorectal, prostate, breast and brain cancers will be given an overview. Translational Imaging (10 credits - PPD) This course will provide examples of where laboratory / preclinical / pharmacological research has been applied to humans, and what pathways exist that allow this translative process to happen. 15 4. Biomechanics (10 credits - PPD) This course will cover both fluid / flow biomechanics as well as musculoskeletal biomechanics. The former will be covered in lectures on biofluid dynamics, the mechanics of solids, of the normal circulation and of ageing and diseased arteries. Blood and blood flow, mechanotransduction, examples of simulation and modelling will allow more in-depth exploration of the fluid / flow biomechanics. 16 Neuroimaging for Research Education This course allows students to gain the knowledge and skills necessary to understand research which uses neuroimaging techniques. It also aims to provide students with the tools to design and set up studies which use neuroimaging, and to analyse the relevant data. There are 6 key courses which focus on: 1. Common Image Processing Techniques 1 (20 credits PPD) This core course aims to introduce you to the major forms of image evaluation commonly used in neuroimaging research. This ranges from the bread and butter techniques like qualitative and quantitative assessment of whole brain and sub-regional brain volumes, simple and complex ways of measuring lesion size, region of interest measurements to assess tissue parameters as might be derived from diffusion-weighted or perfusion images, and simple tractography techniques. Neuroanatomy (10 credits - PPD) This course will review key neuro-anatomy knowledge including how neuro-anatomy relates to function and how the effects of disease in an anatomical location impacts neurological function. Functional Imaging (10 credits PPD) This course is for students with a specific interest in Functional Imaging. Students will be able to focus in great detail on techniques such as functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fmri), Electroencephalography (EEG) and Magneto-encephalography (MEG). Functional Imaging experimental design and data analysis will also be taught so that on exit, students will independently be able to set up and execute Functional Imaging experiments, and extract data appropriately to generate robust outcomes and rigorous conclusions. 20 Microscopy Imaging This course will cover basics of light and fluorescence microscopy, as well as advanced microscopy techniques. It is ideal for those wishing to progress their career in research and development, as well as microscopy. There are 4 key courses which focus on: 1. Light Microscopy (10 credits PPD) 2. Techniques & Physics (20 credits - PPD) 3. Applications in disease research (10 credits - PPD) 4. Digital image processing and analysis (20 credit - PPD) 1. Light microscopy (PPD 10 credits) This course will cover basics of light and fluorescence microscopy, as well as advanced techniques, confocal microscopy, CCD camera technology, and re-enforce taught materials with practical activities. Note that some components of light microscopy will be covered in other courses where these components have broader imaging relevance. Statistics (10 credits - PPD) This course will teach statistical considerations when performing preclinical and clinical studies, including ensuring appropriate sample sizes, assessing the accuracy of diagnostic tests, ROC curves, assessing differences between observers, how to read a paper, and systematic reviews. Study Design (PPD 10 credits) This course will teach key elements of good study design, including for human clinical trials, preclinical studies, microscopic evaluations and basic imaging sciences.
