Intensive Soybean Management: Best of the Best Grand Forks and Moorhead Seth Naeve University of Minnesota St Paul
USB States MN, MI, IA, KY, AR, and LA 3 Projects Minimum Seeding Rates Assess minimum seeding rates for maximum yield and economic returns Light interception vs yield Maximizing Yield Effect of additional products on yield Seed quality effects Annual/Biennial Fertilizer Programs
Seth Naeve Univ. of Minnesota Kurt Thelen Michigan State Univ. Palle Pedersen, formerly with Iowa State Univ. Chad Lee Univ. of Kentucky Jeremy Ross Univ. of Arkansas Jim Board Louisiana State Univ.
Maximizing Yields Rationale: With high grain prices and a perception of stagnant yields, farmers are attempting to buy their way to greater yields often with little (or no) scientific basis. A portion of the USB research attempts to examine maximum yields through current products and to tease-out the product(s) that may provide the greatest chance of increasing yields.

Maximum Yields or Kitchen Sink study Methods 14 treatment combinations Treatments were focused on combinations of products and combinations that simulated hypothetical systems An omission treatment structure was implemented to measure crop response to the selected crop inputs, including a control

Take Homes Yield gains from products tested in our Kitchen Sink experiments were modest at best A fungicide (Headline) at R3 was the single product most likely to provide yield enhancement Not a product, but Row spacing is actually the big winner.
Take Homes (continued) Soybean seeding rates impact yields only marginally after a minimum stand (~100K) is established Slight yield gains beyond 100K generally pay for extra seed.
