Since 1905, through its subsidiaries and predecessors, ENMAX Corporation has provided electricity to Calgarians. As part of Alberta s electricity industry deregulation, in 1998, ENMAX began operating as an independent City of Calgary wholly owned subsidiary.
As our sole Shareholder, The City of Calgary elects our Board of Directors. The Board is accountable to City Council for ensuring that ENMAX delivers long-term value to The City, and by extension, all Calgarians.
ENMAX operates separately from The City. We generate our own revenue and don t receive funding from The City.
In 2015, The City of Calgary s equity in ENMAX was valued at $2.3 billion. As our sole Shareholder, The City receives a portion of our profits as a return through a dividend. From 1998 to 2016, ENMAX has contributed approximately $916 million in dividends to The City of Calgary. Since 2003, The City has dedicated a portion of the dividend toward the ENMAX Legacy Park Fund for Calgary park development.
ENMAX Power Corporation owns, operates and maintains the electricity transmission and distribution system in and around Calgary 38 substations powered through 8,589 km of transmission power lines and distribution power lines. Through our transmission and distribution lines, we support Calgary s growth. We also invest in modernizing our infrastructure to ensure reliable power. In 2013, ENMAX Power had a record $190.3 million spend to meet Calgary s transmission and distribution needs.
The City owns Calgary s approximately 90,000 streetlights and ENMAX Power Services Corporation is contracted to maintain and repair them. Streetlight outages are communicated through The City s service phone line. Rendering of the National Music Centre ENMAX Power Services efficient operational practices for streetlight repairs means that typically less than one per cent of Calgary s streetlights are out-of-service at any given time. As such, we exceed the performance standards for streetlight outages set by The City.
The City owns Calgary s Light Rail Transit (LRT) system. Through past open bid processes, ENMAX Power Services has been contracted by The City to provide maintenance for the LRT s electrical system on existing lines, and to build the electrical system for new lines, extensions and upgraded LRT platforms.
ENMAX Customer Care provides valueadded services to The City including customer care and billing for use of water, sanitary and storm sewer, solid waste disposal and recycling for over 350,000 customers. Each month, ENMAX Power meter readers go to Calgary residences and businesses to record electricity and water meter consumption to ensure charges are as accurate as possible.
In 2006, The City and ENMAX Energy Corporation formed the Energy Management Office (EMO) to help The City meet or exceed energy conservation and greenhouse gas (GHG) emission targets. The EMO purchases electricity and natural gas for City operations and facilitates energy conservation projects, alternative energy use and energy audits. For example, through the EMO, solar technology has been installed at several fire stations and the Southland Leisure Centre.
ENMAX Energy s Downtown District Energy Centre, which can heat up to six million square feet of Calgary building space through connected hot water pipes, currently supplies thermal energy to several downtown customers, including The City of Calgary Municipal Building.
Since 2013, ENMAX Corporation has invested over $3.6 million in community investment in Alberta including financial contributions, volunteer time, in kind donations and program management costs. Some of the organizations we currently support include the United Way, Calgary Distress Centre and Aspen Family and Community Network Society in Calgary.
We participate in The City s annual Safety Expo by providing electrical safety information for Calgary students, and we sponsor the Environmental Achievement by an Educational Institution Calgary Award.
ENMAX employs approximately 1,900 Albertans, with the majority located in Calgary.
