Barton Education has provided MEP design services on numerous campus infrastructure projects for the past 45 years. We understand the design challenges of MEP systems and understand campus infrastructure and specifically consider the following: - Centralized vs Decentralized Systems - Central Plant Equipment Efficiency - Central Utility Distribution Systems - Renewable Energy Systems - Maintenance
Campus infrastructure is the heart and life blood of any college or university. Without a sturdy framework of plumbing, mechanical and electrical systems it is impossible to realize your institution s core mission and vision. Understanding and planning these systems in a strategic manner, through comprehensive utility and systemic master planning, is critical to ongoing and future campus operations. These systems must be flexible from an energy source, use and conservation standpoint as well respectful of their environmental impact. Barton Education understands the strategic, environmental and financial impact of these systems. We work with our clients to develop campus infrastructure that matches the long term goals of the institution while meeting current and future operational needs in a responsible manner. Barton Education provides a team that is dedicated and focused to the specific drivers that shape today s campus infrastructure. A comprehensive utility master plan is invaluable to evaluate best available technology while maintaining multiple energy sources, energy efficiency, flexibility for growth and systemic redundancy all while leveraging campus wide load profile diversity. We understand the potentially symbiotic relationship between facilities with divergent needs, allowing for the implementation of technologies such as co-generation, solar electric and solar thermal systems. It is critical to understand how the infrastructure (tele/data, sanitary, storm water, domestic water, electric, chilled water, hot water, steam and gas systems, etc.) can best meet current needs as well as future needs through integration with campus wide facility master planning. Each of these central generation and distribution systems are unique to the specific institution and require a custom engineered approach. The entire campus needs to be considered through detailed survey, analysis and modeling as well as coordination with campus architectural planning. We can evaluate multiple central plant and distribution strategies based on the variables that are most important to you, the owner. All of these decisions have significant financial impact from a first cost and ongoing maintenance and operational cost standpoint. From initial concept study to final construction and commissioning, our dedicated team of engineers works diligently to understand the needs and goals of each institution and strives to deliver a uniquely engineered solution. Whether you are evaluating your current building stock and energy use or strategically planning for the next ten years of renovation and construction, a thorough understanding of the systems and infrastructure that serve these facilities is critical. Understanding and applying the best technologies in a fiscally responsible manner while maintaining continuity of services to your campus all play a role in the decision making process. You can be confident that Barton Education has the experience to focus on the right details at the right time to provide the right solution to meet your needs.
Albright College Reading, PA Central Plant Design $3.6 million June 2011 Barton Education conducted a feasibility study, which included evaluation of central and de-centralized plant options, and ultimately completed mechanical and electrical design and construction services for a new central heating and cooling plant serving several current and future buildings on the Albright College campus. The plant included a 2000 kva generator capable of complete system backup, as well as a new, 400 boiler horsepower, dual-fuel boiler plant and a new 800-ton cooling plant with provisions for future expansion. The design included a 90-ton dedicated heat recovery chiller that provided cogeneration of both chilled water and hot water for reheat loads during summer months.
Franklin & Marshall College Lancaster, PA Central Boiler and Chiller Replacement $2.7 million November 2009 Barton Education provided mechanical, electrical and plumbing design services as the prime design professional for the replacement of an existing 770-ton centrifugal chiller plant with a 1,000-ton centrifugal chiller, pumps, cooling tower and associated piping and appurtenances. The design included replacement of existing steam boilers with three 800 boiler horsepower firetube steam boilers. The project also included steam flow measuring stations for each boiler, a steam pressure reducing station with three pressure-reducing valves and the replacement of most steam and condensate piping within the plant. Construction of the boiler plant was completed during summer months while the main student body was not on campus and the replacement of the main central plant chiller was completed during the heating season. The larger photo above shows the chiller being lifted into the chiller plant through the roof of the existing central plant.
Gettysburg College Gettysburg, PA Campus Utility Master Plan & Central Energy Plant Expansion $2.3 million November 2009 Barton Education provided master planning services including documenting existing campus utilities and performing a building-by-building systems evaluation in conjunction with a facility master plan provided by the Architectural master planner. Barton Education provided systems evaluation for 87 buildings totaling more than 1.5 million square feet on campus. Part of this evaluation included evaluation of distributed vs. central utility services. Barton Education provided mechanical, electrical and plumbing design, construction and project management services for the expansion of the central energy plant to serve a new 55,000 square-foot recreation center as well as provide infrastructure to serve an additional 300,000 square feet of future building area. The project included upgrades to the central chiller plant to replace inefficient air-cooled chillers with two 750-ton water-cooled centrifugal chillers with variable speed drives and free cooling (without the need for compressor operation). In addition, Barton designed upgrades to the central steam plant including repairing steam and condensate distribution piping to eliminate energy-wasting leaks and also extended steam, condensate and chilled water piping and associated utility tunnels to serve the new building and future buildings. Barton also added a 750 boiler horsepower steam boiler to the plant, along with two cooling towers with provisions for a third. The net effect increased the central plant capacity while decreasing campus primary electrical demand.
Ursinus College Collegeville, PA Campus Energy Study $690,000 June 2007 Barton Education conducted a study for the campus central buildings to develop an energy procurement and distribution plan as well as to identify opportunities for energy conservation. The study included a survey of 15 buildings, totaling more than 800,000 square feet, as well as a utility rate analysis and detailed energy modeling of the central utility plant and associated campus buildings. In order to make a final recommendation, Barton Education evaluated each system based on its current configuration, age, condition and suitability for continued use as well as its ability to meet projected infrastructure needs. Barton Education recommended approximately $1.5 million dollars of renovations for Ursinus College to consider for improvements. Muhlenberg College Allentown, PA Central Utility Master Plan $5.4 million October 2014 Barton Education provided mechanical, electrical and plumbing design services for a campus utility master plan including 19 buildings totaling almost 1 million square feet. The project included surveying the existing chilled water central equipment, distribution systems and associated appurtenances as well as the existing steam heating central equipment, distribution systems, condensate return systems and associated appurtenances. The project also included a survey of the existing HVAC systems serving each of the buildings to ascertain type, size, age and general condition of the equipment. Individual building heating and cooling load profiles were developed in conjunction with evaluation of multiple central utility plant options. These profiles were then overlaid in various permutations. From this analysis, several additional detailed studies of potential options were completed and included probable construction costs, phasing, space analysis and continuity of service analysis. Mount St. Mary s University Emmittsburg, MD Boiler Replacement $338,000 Barton Education incorporated building information modeling (BIM) technology to provide mechanical and electrical engineering services to replace an existing coalfired boiler with an approximate 300 BHP gas/oil firetube boiler at Mount St. Mary s University. Barton Education previously evaluated and made recommendations relative to the replacement of the existing central coal-fired steam boiler plant and campus distribution system.
