2 Wireless Internet Your gateway to the world Wireless internet technology (WiFi) allows you to get online without wires and provides a continuous WiFi connection on-the-move. WiFi is available on all National Express East Coast trains and in our First Class Lounges. The technology combines broadband satellite and multiple mobile data connections to ensure continuous service along the entire East Coast route. Our system automatically selects the best connection in the area, which means your session remains uninterrupted throughout your journey. Remember our WiFi support team is here to help if you experience any problems. WiFi Support Team Telephone: wifi@nationalexpress.com This leaflet is also available in Large Print and other formats. 3 Where can I access WiFi? How do I get started? Free connection for all Connection to WiFi is free of charge for all our passengers, both on-board and in all our First Class Lounges. Once your laptop has established a connection you can get online straight away. What do I need? Most new laptops and PDAs are pre-configured which means you can access WiFi straight away. If you have an older model, you may need to purchase a WiFi card from an electronics retailer. Laptops Ideally laptops should be running Windows XP, Windows 2000 or Windows 98. Apple Mac devices need to be using operating system 9.0 or above and Linux users should have operating system 2.2 or above. Most enabled laptops will automatically detect the wireless network on board. PDAs For handheld PDA devices, Palm Operating System 4.0 or above, or Microsoft PocketPC 2002 and above, is required. Connection is easy, simply turn on your laptop, connect to nxecwifi and open your internet browser. If you encounter any problems, just call the WiFi support team. Configuring my computer Turn your laptop or PDA on as usual. Click on the WiFi detector which is this symbol, and go to Turn radio on, which will allow your computer to detect WiFi. Tick the Use Windows to configure my wireless network settings (fig 1). A pop-up should appear in the bottom right of your screen, telling you that a number of wireless networks have been detected in range of your computer. Click on it to see the list of networks and, when prompted, click to connect to the nxecwifi network. Next, launch your internet browser (e.g. Internet Explorer or Safari) and enter the fig.1 following address: 2 3

4 Most new laptops and PDAs are pre-configured and should detect the National Express WiFi service automatically. If your computer doesn t connect automatically please follow steps 1-3 below. The instructions are based on the Windows XP system. Settings for other systems are similar. 1. To configure Microsoft Internet Explorer 2. To confirm your SSID (Secure Set Identifier) settings NB: a SSID is the name of a wireless local area network (WLAN). All wireless devices on a WLAN must employ the same SSID to communicate with each other. a. Click on Start b. Go to Settings a. Open your browser and go to the Tools menu b. Select Internet Options and the tab Connections (fig 2a) fig.2a c. Go to Control Panel d. Choose Network Connections e. Highlight and right-click fig.3 on your Wireless Network Connection, then choose Properties from the menu c. Under LAN Settings open the fig.2b window for Local Area Network (LAN) settings d. Ensure the following options are set: Select Automatically detect settings (fig 2b) Deselect Use automatic configuration script Deselect Use a proxy server for your LAN e. Click OK, then click OK again f. Highlight the Wireless Networks tab g. Highlight nxecwifi in the available networks window (fig 3). Go into Properties. Ensure that the data encryption (WEP enabled) option is disabled, as this is fig.4a a public service fig.4b h. Click OK and then click on the Advanced button (fig 4a). Ensure that Access point (infrastructure) networks only is selected (fig 4b) i. Close the window and click OK 4 5

5 3. Obtain an IP (Internet Protocol) address NB: an IP address is a unique address each computer using the internet must have in order to send and retrieve data. a. Click on Start b. Go to Settings c. Go to Control Panel d. Choose Network Connections fig.5a e. Highlight and right-click on your Wireless Network Connection, then choose Properties from the menu f. Scroll down and highlight Internet Protocol TCP/IP option and click on Properties (fig 5a) g. Select Obtain an IP address automatically fig.5b and Obtain DNS server address automatically and click OK to confirm (fig 5b). (Make a note of the original IP and DNS settings as these will be lost when the setting is changed and will need to be changed back for your home/office network) h. If prompted, click OK to confirm After you have been through the configuration settings above and made any changes, you may need to reboot your laptop. 6 FAQs Q. How does the service work? A: The connection to the train is provided through a combination of a satellite and multiple 3G/HSDPA mobile networks. These external links are combined to deliver a constant internet connection even when going through a tunnel. Q. What speeds will I get from the service? A: Due to the nature of the mobile connections the speed will fluctuate depending on your geographic location and the number of users on the service. However, you should always enjoy a faster service than using a PC mobile data card. Q. How much does it cost? A: Connection to WiFi is free of charge for all passengers, both on-board and in all our First Class Lounges. Q. How secure is the network? A: All practical safeguards have been implemented on the train. Although the network is an open network it should not be possible for other users to gain unauthorised access to your computer. Always ensure that you are connected to the right network. We also recommend that you have up-to-date firewall and anti-virus software. 7

6 Q. Which network do I connect to? A: You should connect to nxecwifi Q. Your landing page does not appear automatically when I open my web browser. What do I do? A: Enter into your address bar Q. I can t seem to send s from the train A: Try changing your SMTP server in your mail software to smtp.iss.icomera.com Q. I need more help who do I contact? A: If you are experiencing difficulties connecting to the service you should contact the WiFi Support Team on: (available Monday to Friday ). The WiFi Support Team should be able to resolve any difficulties that they are experiencing at the time. If you don t have a mobile phone ask a member of the train crew and they will be able to contact us. Q. I can t seem to get access to my computer s settings to configure it to use the National Express WiFi service. Why is this? A: Your WiFi settings have probably been locked down by your company s IT department. Please consult with your IT manager to change these. 8 9
