Overview You can transfer music from your phone to a computer using the USB cable and Sony Ericsson Media Manager, which is included on the CD that comes with your phone. Installing Media Manager The Media Manager software enables you to transfer music from CDs or a computer to your phone. You can also download Media Manager from System requirements The system requirements are: At least 200 MB free hard disk space Microsoft Windows XP (SP2 or later) 512 MB RAM 1 GHz processor A Microsoft Windows compatible sound card A CD-ROM drive 2 July 2007
4 A USB 2.0 cable and port QuickTime 7.0 (available on the CD) Internet connection (for Gracenote CD identification and software activation) Microsoft.NET Framework 2.0 (available on the CD) Microsoft Windows Explorer 5.0 or later (available on the CD) Installing from the PC Suite CD Before you install Media Manager you should install the Sony Ericsson PC Suite software on your computer. To install Media Manager from the PC Suite CD 1. Insert the CD that came with the phone. The CD should start automatically, if not: click Start/Run... and type in D:/start.exe and click OK (D: is the CD drive letter on the system). 2. Select a language. 3. Click Install in the Media Manager section. 4. If needed, follow the instructions to install.net Framework 2.0 from the CD. 5. In the installation wizard: Click Next to continue the installation. 6. Read and accept the licence agreement, then click Next. 7. Click Next to install to the default folder. 8. Click Install to begin the installation. 9. Click Finish to exit the wizard. Downloading from the Web and installing Before you install Media Manager you should install the Sony Ericsson PC Suite software on your computer. To download the latest version of Media Manager 1. In your Internet browser, go to 2. Select a region and country. 3. Select a phone from the list or enter your phone model in the text field. 4. Select Software downloads. 5. Select Media Manager Setup X.X.X.X for your preferred language under Applications. 6. Select Download and save the file to your computer. To install Media Manager from the downloaded file 1. Double-click the downloaded Media Manager file. 2. If needed, follow the instructions to download and install.net Framework 2.0 from the Internet. 3. In the installation wizard: Click Next to continue the installation. 4. Read and accept the licence agreement, then click Next. 5. Click Next to install to the default folder. 6. Click Install to begin the installation. 7. Click Finish to exit the wizard. 3 July 2007
5 Connecting the USB cable The Sony Ericsson USB cable that comes with your phone can be used to connect the computer and the phone. Your phone can be either on or off when you connect the USB cable. If the phone is on, select File transfer in the pop-up that appears on the phone. To change the mass storage default settings on your phone, select Menu > Settings > the Connectivity tab > USB > USB mode > Mass storage before connecting your phone and computer. To connect your phone to a computer with the USB cable 1. Connect the USB cable to your phone and computer. 2. Computer: If the Found New Hardware Wizard appears, click Cancel to exit the wizard. 3. Phone: Select Mass storage. 4. The phone will shut down in this mode but will restart when it is disconnected from the USB cable. 5. Computer: Your phone memory and memory card are added as removable disks in Windows Explorer. 6 6. Computer: If a dialogue box asks what you want to do with the files on the removable disks (the phone memory and memory card), select Take no action. 7. Transfer music with Media Manager, see Using Media Manager to transfer music on page 5. Transferring music Using Media Manager to transfer music To transfer music using Media Manager 1. Make sure the USB cable is connected to the computer and the phone. See Connecting the USB cable on page Start Media Manager by clicking the Media Manager icon, or double-click the shortcut to Media Manager on your desktop. 3. Select the Music tab or the Audio CD tab as the music source. 4. Locate and select the folder with the tracks you want to transfer. 5. Transfer the tracks to your phone by clicking the downward arrow. 6. Select the location to transfer the tracks to in the drop-down list (Removable Disk). 7. For more information on transferring music, refer to Media Manager Help. Click in the top right corner of the Media Manager window. Do not disconnect the USB cable during file transfer as this may harm the phone memory or the memory card. 8. Close the Media Manager software. 9. Right-click both Removable Disk icons in Microsoft Windows Explorer and select Eject to disconnect the USB cable. A pop-up then appears in the phone saying that it is safe to disconnect the USB cable. 5 July 2007
7 Use Music Player to listen to music To play music 1. From standby select Media and scroll to Music. 2. Scroll to a title and select Play. Music Player controls Press the centre touch option to stop and resume music. Press to go to the next track. Press to go to the previous track. When you listen to music, press and hold down to fast forward. When you listen to music, press and hold down to rewind a track. When you listen to music, press and to move between tracks. To return to the player menus select Back. Browsing files In the Music player browser you can browse for music files and videos: Artists list tracks you have transferred using Media Manager. Albums list music tracks by album in your phone and on a memory card. Tracks list all music tracks in your phone and on a memory card. Audio books list audio books you have transferred from your computer. Podcasts list all podcasts you have transferred from your computer. Playlists create own lists of tracks. Video list all music videos in your phone or on a memory card. Playlists To organize the media files that are stored in your phone, you can create playlists. Files in a playlist can be sorted by artist or title. You can add a file to more than one playlist. When you delete a playlist or a file from a playlist, the actual music file is not deleted from the phone memory or memory card. Only the playlist reference to it is deleted and you can still add the file to another playlist. To create a playlist 1. From standby select Media and scroll to Music > Playlists. 2. Scroll to New playlist and select Add. 3. Enter a name and select OK. 4. Scroll to a track and select Mark. 5. Select Add to add the track to the playlist. 6 July 2007
8 To add files to a playlist 1. From standby select Media and scroll to Music > Playlists. 2. Scroll to the playlist and select Open. 3. Select Options > Add media. 4. Scroll to a track and select Mark. 5. Select Add to add the track to the playlist. To remove tracks from a playlist 1. From standby select Media and scroll to Music > Playlists. 2. Scroll to the playlist and select Open. 3. Scroll to the track and press. To delete a playlist From standby select Media and scroll to Music > Playlists. Playlist options Select Options for the following: Add media add files or folders to the playlist. Sort by sort the playlist by artist or title. Delete remove a file from the playlist. Only the reference to the file is removed and not the file itself. Rename rename the playlist. You can only rename user-created playlists. Delete playlist delete the playlist. Only the playlist is deleted; the files are still listed in the File manager. You can only delete user-created playlists. Music player options You have different Options when you listen to music: Add media add tracks or folders to a playlist. Delete remove tracks. Tracks are only removed from a playlist you have created. Rename rename a playlist. You can only rename playlists you have created. Delete playlist delete a playlist. The tracks are still found in the phone. You can only delete playlists you have created. Minimize minimize the music player and return to standby with music still playing. Information view information about a current track. Play mode select Shuffle to play tracks randomly in a playlist, or Loop to restart a playlist after the last track ends. Equalizer change the settings of the treble and bass when playing a track. Send send a track using an available transfer method. Save playlist save a play queue to a new playlist. Online music and videos View videos and listen to music by streaming them to your phone from the Internet. If settings are not already in the phone, contact your network operator. If there are no Internet settings in your phone, visit for remote configuration for the Internet or to download the document Getting started guide for Using the Internet. 7 July 2007
9 To select a data account for streaming 1. From standby select Menu > Settings > the Connectivity tab > Streaming settings. 2. Select the data account to use. To stream music and music videos 1. From standby select Menu > Internet. 2. Select Options > Go to > Bookmarks. 3. Select a link to stream from. PlayNow With the PlayNow service, you can listen to music files before you decide to purchase and download them to your phone. Each music tone is part of an original song and is optimized for your Sony Ericsson mobile phone. This function is network- or operator dependant. Please contact your network operator for information about your subscription and PlayNow. In some countries you may be able to purchase music tones from some of the world s top musical artists. This service is not available in all countries or when you are using a network other than your network operator. A message will appear to inform you about this when selecting the PlayNow icon. Before you start Make sure that: You have a phone subscription that supports EDGE/UMTS or GPRS data transmission. Visit and download the document Getting started guide for Using the Internet for more information. You may also have to register as an Internet user with your service provider or network operator. You can also visit to download the document Getting started guide for Using the Internet. You have free memory in your phone. Downloading from PlayNow The price appears when you select to download and save a music file. Your phone bill or prepay card is debited when a purchase is accepted. Terms and conditions are also provided in the phone kit. To listen to PlayNow music 1. From standby select Menu > PlayNow. 2. Select music from a list. To download a music file When you have listened to a music file preview, you can agree to download that file to your phone. By pressing Yes, you accept the conditions for downloading files from PlayNow. These conditions are stated in the User guide for your phone. 1. Select Yes to download. 2. A text message is sent to confirm payment and the file is made available to download. 8 July 2007
10 Radio If your phone supports this function you can listen to the radio and identify the music via the Internet. The handsfree works as the antenna and it must be connected to the phone. Not all phones have these functions. Do not use the phone as a radio in places where this is prohibited. To listen to the radio 1. Connect the handsfree to your phone. 2. From standby select Menu > Radio. Saving channels You can save up to 20 preset channels in your phone. To save channels When you have found a radio channel select Options > Save. To select saved channels 1. From standby select Menu > Radio > Options > Channels. 2. Select a radio channel. Radio options Select Options for the following: Turn off turn off the radio. TrackID search for song titles, artists and album names. Save save the current frequency in a position. Channels select, rename, replace or delete a preset channel. Auto save find and save FM channels with a strong signal in positions 1 to 20. Previously saved channels are replaced. Turn on speaker use the speaker. Set frequency enter a frequency manually. RDS set options for alternative frequency (AF) and station information. Turn on Mono turn on mono sound. Minimize return to standby to use other functions when using the radio. To adjust the volume Press the volume keys on the side of the phone up or down to increase or decrease the volume. 9 July 2007
