Nevertheless, offshore wind is a steadily growing market: since 2001 the power rating of wind turbines has increased from 2 MW to state-of-the-art > 5 MW turbines and today s wind farms are located further offshore (up to 60 km) and in deeper waters (up to 50 m). By 2020, global wind power generation capacity is expected to exceed 671 GW with 109 GW generated offshore. By 2050 this will reach up to 2016 GW with 652 GW (32%) located at sea - no less than a six fold increase in installed offshore capacity. As oceans cover 71% of the earth s surface, marine energy is equally gaining the interest of utilities around the world. Marine capacity is expected to surpass 3.6 GW by 2020 in Europe and up to 25 GW globally. By 2050, marine energies could account for 2.2% of global electricity demand. belwind n.v. Surveys & investigations of met-ocean and soil data Met-ocean and soil data surveys are the first steps towards the engineering of your project. We can organise and implement these surveys and investigations anywhere: preparation of specifications up to work supervision, executing specific surveys and reports. Site condition & workability analysis Based on survey measurements on site and/or models, the definition of wind, geotechnical, morphodynamic and hydrodynamic design parameters is key to the project design process and can lead to significant cost savings. Our analysis methodologies include stateof-the-art techniques, statistics and modelling and are recognised by certification authorities (GL, Dnv, etc.). Wind analysis & wind turbine selection Accurate wind data allows us to select the most appropriate wind turbines for your site, calculate energy generation and optimise park layout to achieve maximum economic returns. We combine data from numerous meteorological stations with current data obtained from measurement masts and long term datasets. We can also assist with the installation of an on-site measurement mast. Substructures Our experience covers all types of substructures for wind turbines and offshore HV stations notably jacket, monopile and gravity based foundations. Producing integrated conceptual, basic and detailed design calculations (covering structure, soil, water and wind turbine loading interaction), we will analyse the best technical, economical and environmental solution. Scour protection Scour protection is required for the seabed level design and to prevent seabed erosion. In line with the hydrodynamic and morphodynamic conditions we will design the most appropriate scour protection, defining size, materials and maintenance programme needed allowing optimisations between CAPEX and OPEX. Cables The presence of sandbanks, natural habitat or military areas, other marine cables, pipelines and various obstacles, further impact the definition of electrical cable trajectories. As the shortest route is not always the most economical one, we provide a cable trajectory analysis, including installation techniques and land-fall design, resulting in trajectory optimisation. Electrical basic design The unique specifications of each offshore wind farm call for a tailormade electrical transmission system. Our engineering scope covers the basic network design, from the MV switchgear in the turbine masts, to the HV switching station and HV export cable to the transmission grid. Safety and emergency operating conditions are also a major concern. Electrical components The design, reliability and maintenance of offshore electrical equipment need special consideration. We will conduct technical analyses on the HV & MV electrical systems to optimise the number and location of platforms, power transformers, reactive compensation means, HV & MV switchgear, power cables, emergency supplies and auxiliary systems. Electrical operations Unpredictable power generation behaviour and grid requirements require the design of simple and reliable protection and monitoring systems. This has a direct impact on the availability of your offshore wind farm by reducing maintenance works to the minimum. Operation & Maintenance (O&M) O&M costs are a substantial part of the total ownership cost of an offshore wind farm.
