5 OMS: OPERATIONS, MAINTENANCE, AND SERVICES From dawn until dusk, Suzlon s unparalleled customer service and flexibility is the DNA of our business culture that is embedded across Suzlon s value chain, and particularly within our OMS team. Suzlon enhances routine maintenance and operations with service programs that include a can do attitude to give complete customer satisfaction through tailored OMS contracts to meet your unique business plan. Suzlon s OMS team is best defined through its people, parts and processes. Our Special Projects experts are focused on non-standard work and large component matters PEOPLE OMS Service Engineering and Site Technicians This geographically distributed team provides onsite OMS and technical support to our customers to safely manage day-to-day operations. Using extensive field experience they also bring innovative ideas to the team when faced with new challenges. Whether it s engineering a new way to do an up tower repair, using weather mapping to continually hone maintenance work or finding new ways to refine and lighten the tool bag carried during a climb, this crew strives to improve the OMS efficiency to result in less downtime for our customers assets. Special Projects Team Special Projects experts work hand-in-hand with OMS teams across the continent to ensure power plant service that is anything but standard. They are a dedicated team of professional electrical and mechanical engineers and technical managers, trained to the same level as our O&M technicians, and comprised of highly-qualified personnel with extensive experience in the wind industry, both in North America and internationally. This roaming technical support team operates across our sites to support engineering changes and seek continuous improvement for maximum production. PARTS Supply Chain Management The Suzlon supply chain team prides itself on its abilities to continually improve and drive efficiencies that make it a first in class organization. Our strides toward vendor consistency, quality, cost and other Key Performance Indicators have been instrumental to Suzlon s lean practices. Suzlon s ability to stay at the forefront of supply chain best practices has allowed us to reduce production resource requirements and costs, improve customer responsiveness, and product quality. Suzlon s Central Distribution Facility outside of Chicago incorporates Six Sigma, lean processes and incorporates an efficiently scheduled milk run program that ensures site managers get the parts they need and precisely when they need them. If an emergency arises, a rapid response system is built into it so critical needs rise immediately to the top. Our proximity to Chicago s O Hare airport and stock of over $15 million in parts ensures we optimize our fleet operations each and every day. With so much expertise under one roof, Suzlon utilizes this facility to refurbish critical spare parts including motors, breakers and contactors. Whenever possible, Suzlon s uses group innovation to determine if up tower fixes can be achieved to minimize turbine down time while still maintaining high quality at an economical cost. 6 OMS: PEOPLE, PARTS, PROCESSES PROCESSES Suzlon Monitoring Center (SMC) 24/7 Monitoring Suzlon has made a significant investment to establish a central monitoring facility in its Chicago headquarters. This hub operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week to monitor over 1,380 turbines in the United States and Canada, as well as 1,065 turbines in Brazil, Europe, Australia, and China. Staffed by specifically trained service technicians and engineers, the monitoring team is able to identify issues, conduct remote resets and perform initial trouble shooting to significantly reduce turbine downtime and maximize production. To improve our performance, Suzlon has a special roll-in, roll-out program whereby SMC technicians and field technicians exchange places for one week in order to understand one another s roll and better support the communication and correction of wind farm issues as they arise. The SMC actively participates with the site service teams to assess fault patterns and downtime trends in order to develop pre-emptive solutions that enhance wind turbine availability. The team is responsible for complex problem solving and providing assistance to site technicians who are actively troubleshooting, while also appropriately positioned to provide OMS with reports for clients. Safety Training Culture Suzlon is a proven industry leader in safety and training, having the first training facility in North America with a fully-operating indoor nacelle and hub mounted on a tower. This state-of-the-art training environment ensures that customers are serviced with the safest and best prepared technicians on Suzlon s latest available equipment. Every new Suzlon technician participates in a rigorous 15-day safety training course prior to their first day of work at a wind farm. Training continues through the Suzlon Learning Management System with a combination of hands on, practical, and computer based training which is tracked monthly to ensure technicians are ready to safely serve our customers. At the site team level, Suzlon measures monthly for safety performance through our compliance management system. Tracking over 400 leading safety metrics reported via the Suzlon Safety Dash Board ensures employees and management are actively taking care of personal and asset safety 24/7. Energy Capture Guarantee When the wind begins to blow, it s our priority that your asset is cut in and producing power at its rated wind speed. With Suzlon s Energy Capture Guarantee, technicians maximize power production by working on turbines during the calm days and ensure high power production on windy days. 7 BEST IN CLASS SAFETY & TRAINING SAFETY ACROSS THE VALUE CHAIN Construction Suzlon uses a specific construction methodology defined in our Project Execution Plan by addressing the scope of work requirements, and details how work is managed and controlled. All Suzlon sites are managed with health and safety as our highest priority and each project is resourced with an assigned health and safety manager. In order to achieve safe implementation of the project, Suzlon promotes a safe and healthy working environment with a target of zero lost time incidents for all site activities. Because Suzlon is a turbine supplier, the construction team s main responsibility is to handle all mechanical and electrical inspections as the equipment arrives on site. Installation is the responsibility of the customer and Suzlon is there to partner with the customer s chosen vendor, ensure they meet Suzlon s safety standards and provide support, certification and documentation while each turbine is erected. Commissioning Once construction is completed, Suzlon Commissioning Teams help bring the turbine on line. Upon installation, our experienced team energizes the turbines, conducts standard tests for the electrical infrastructure and conducts inspections of civil engineering quality records. Suzlon s commissioning process ensures a safe and consistent product is delivered to support the turbines long-term availability at contractually agreed upon rates. In 2012 we capitalized on the strengths of a joint Suzlon-REpower construction and commissioning team by installing 193 turbines in Canada and 379 machines in the U.S. before December 31, This was a record year of installations for the company with a total of 1,177 MW of capacity all with no major safety incidents. Technician Training Suzlon has intensive and continuous training programs for wind technicians at our world-class facility, Suzlon Wind Turbine Training Center, located outside of Chicago. This facility features the first fully-operational, indoor wind turbine on the continent in a state-of-the-art training environment to offer real life scenarios. Suzlon technicians are given the absolute best experience before heading out to the field. All technicians build on their key skill sets through our rigorous safety training program that emphasizes advanced Electrically Qualified Worker (EQW). Suzlon s Level 1 through Level 3 training, covers topics that range from an introduction to Suzlon wind turbines to advanced classes with component manufacturers to continually enhance the techs technical background. At a minimum, a technician must pass Level 1 training to be a Suzlon employee. Suzlon believes in investing in our people to prepare for the future of the wind power industry. Leadership and management training for our leaders in the field not only builds Suzlon s succession plan, but helps ensure a wind farm is productive from every aspect of management. Suzlon s highest priority is always safety and that starts with rescue drills that mimic real life scenarios with participation from area first responders Outstanding Safety Performance It should be clear by now that Suzlon gives highest priority to safety in every aspect of our value chain. This deep company culture has earned us one of the safest OEM operations records in the U.S. based on AWEA s annual safety survey. Suzlon also garnered recognition twice by our customer Duke Energy with their President s Award for safe operations. 8 LOGISTICS The logistics of transporting the equipment used to make wind power is anything but simple. The massive size of wind turbine parts presents challenges in their transportation, not to mention requiring a significant cost investment. Delivery must be a combination of masterful choreography and communication, and Suzlon acts as the conductor in this symphony ensuring a clear, time-efficient route from start to finish. DESIGN & ENGINEERING Wind and Site The wind and site engineering team in Chicago, part of Suzlon s Global Wind and Site Network, assists customers with resource assessment, layout optimization, economic analysis, sound modeling, and site suitability. The global network is based in Denmark and offers a critical mass of knowledge and experience. For the customer, this means local support and international expertise to give optimal results for a realistic layout that maximizes energy yields. Our wind and site engineers optimize the design of wind farm sites, based on wind data, noise and environmental constraints. Other functions include wind data analysis, wind load parameter calculations, sound level estimates, and production estimates all using the latest wind industry tools such as WindPro and WAsP. SCADA Development Team The Suzlon SCADA system acts as the backbone for the wind farm project. Suzlon s SCADA network is well regarded by our customers for providing ease of use to the rich quality of data and reporting required by our customers. It connects the individual turbines and substation information to a central fiber network that allows for remote 24/7 supervision, monitoring and data collection at the Suzlon Monitoring Center in Chicago. In collaboration with SCADA Development in Denmark, the Chicago SCADA Engineering team provides expertise in SCADA implementation, management of data exchange and grid-regulation through OPC, ModBus and various hardwired inputs. With our SC-Reporting SCADA Server, both Suzlon and its customers can access historical data, industryleading reporting tools and manage maintenance allocations to maximize performance and power production output.
