5 Foreword to the 1 st edition Previously the construction of gas service lines was subject to the rulings of DVGW Code of Practice G 600 Technical Specifications For Gas Installations (DVGW -TRGI). The growing demand for natural gas, general technical developments in the field of gas supply, such as the use of new materials, higher pressure levels, improved corrosion protection and the more widespread use of building machinery for civil underground construction work fundamentally affect service line. This circumstance resulted as early as 1978 in the following announcement by the DVGW Residential Installation and Local Gas Distribution committees: Service lines shall be constructed and tested for the same operating pressure for which the local pipework is/has been designed/constructed. The basis for this is the relevant material-specific DVGW Code of Practice, z. B. G 461/I, G 462/I or G 472. For service lines with a operating pressure of up to 4 bar with threaded joints, steel pipes shall be used in the dimensions set out in DIN 2442 with requirements in accordance with DIN 2470 part 1. For the service line entry into the building, and their construction within the building, the DVGW-TRGI shall be observed. As part of the process of adjusting the DVGW system of rules to the new circumstances, a DVGW working group was commissioned in 1979 to regulate design and construction of service lines in an ind e- pendent DVGW Code of Practice. This Code of Practice will come into force with the new draft of the DVGW-TRGI when the DVGW-TRGI 1972 becomes obsolete. It applies to all service lines for operating pressures of up to 4 bar which will be constructed after this date. Eschborn, June 1986 DVGW Deutscher Verein des Gas- and Wasserfaches e.v. Foreword to the 2nd edition As part of the introduction of European standardization, the harmonization of the DVGW system of rules, and in the light of technical developments and of previously gained experience, Code of Practice G 459 has been updated, with particular emphasis on the rules governing separation distances, overbuilding, service line entries and shut-off devices. The Technical Rule DVGW Code of Practice G 459 (Issue June 1986) has been withdrawn and is supe r- seded by the publication of Code of Practice G 459/I (Issue May 1998).
