2 Course Registration Meet Our Instructors For students who are not enrolled in the CES Licensure Program You may register for courses in this catalog by mailing the registration form with your payment, or you may register online and pay by credit card. For Licensure Program enrollees If you are currently enrolled in a CES Licensure Program and your account is in good standing, you may register for your required courses by mailing in the registration form in this catalog or by registering online as a Licensure Program enrollee. You will not be charged for required courses that are part of your payment plan.* Payment for any individual courses that are not part of your Licensure Program is due at registration. *You will need to pay for RETELL if you enrolled prior to July 1, Registration deadlines and late fees Each course has a registration deadline. Students registering after 5:00pm on the deadline date may only do so by mail, fax, or in person. A $75 late fee must accompany the registration form. For course and registration information, contact: registrar@collaborative.org CES Educator Licensure Program Collaborative for Educational Services 97 Hawley Street Northampton, MA fax licensure@collaborative.org Website: collaborative.org/licensure The Collaborative for Educational Services is a public, nonprofit educational service agency founded in 1974 to serve educators, schools and school districts, communities, and learners with diverse learning needs. Everyone is a learner Matthew Beyranevand is the K-12 Mathematics Coordinator for the Chelmsford Public Schools. A former math teacher, he has led over 30 sections of graduate courses. Carmelo Chiello has an MA in TESOL and Bilingual Education, as well as a TEFL certificate, and is currently a doctoral candidate at UMass. He taught middle school social studies in South Florida for 11 years and ESL in Spain. Patricia DeAngelis is a Mathematics Curriculum Specialist for CES who has taught in urban and rural schools and at SummerMath for Teachers. Cynthia Diemand is a classroom and mentor teacher. Formerly, she was a special education teacher in the Southampton Public Schools. Andrew Foster teaches in the Northampton Public Schools. He has taught typical and special needs students at all grade levels. David Greenberg is a veteran technology director, teacher coach, and online learning instructor. Martha Harrington is a veteran special education teacher who served in the Brookline (MA) Public Schools. Maureen Henry is the Director of Title I and a reading specialist for the Shrewsbury Public Schools, and a former literacy coach. Kara Kettles worked in the Springfield Public Schools for nearly two decades, as an ESL and Reading Specialist. She has served on numerous committees and has been an adjunct faculty member and RETELL Instructor for the MA ESE. Sara Lowe is a Speech and Language Pathologist who specializes in utilizing assistive technology to support special education students across the curriculum. Sara is currently a Speech Language Pathologist and Assistive Technology Specialist at the Lebanon, NH Middle School. Barbara Marderosian is the ELL Director for the Dudley-Charlton (MA) Public Schools. Audrey Morse is a Curriculum and Instruction Specialist at CES, with an extensive K-12 background as both a speech and language pathologist and an ESL teacher. Sanford Roth is a veteran classroom, reading, and special education teacher. Trained as both a Literacy Collaborative trainer and a Reading Recovery teacher, he leads school improvement initiatives in Massachusetts and Connecticut schools. Christine Monopoli Shea is a Data Specialist and Support Facilitator for the Lower Pioneer Valley Educational Collaborative, working with school districts in their use of data and to strengthen school leadership. Jennifer Traverso is a Teacher Consultant for the Western Massachusetts Writing Project. She has been teaching for over twenty years in grades 1-8 and is currently the PreK-12 District Literacy Coach for the Ayer-Shirley Regional School District. 1 Teach IN MASS. The high-quality educator licensure preparation courses offered by CES reflect the insights gained over those years in developing innovative, engaging programs that meet the needs of our adult learners. Our licensure courses are geared toward aspiring educators and current educators who wish to continue expanding their repertoire of teaching strategies and/or earn an additional license in a high-need area.

Admissions Counselor tmanzello@fitchburgstate.edu In conjunction with Fitchburg State University, the Collaborative prepares Educational Leaders who are KNOWLEDGEABLE, ETHICAL, SKILLFUL, and CARING. GRADUATE CREDIT In collaboration with Fitchburg State University, licensure courses at all of our locations across Massachusetts may be taken for graduate credit. Graduate credit is available for each CES Licensure Program course for an additional fee; the 3-credit cost is currently $325 per course. Registration and payment for graduate credit occurs at the first face-to-face session of every course. Checks for graduate credit should be made out to the Collaborative for Educational Services. Graduate credits earned through CES Licensure Program courses may be used toward a Master s Degree (MEd-Curriculum & Teaching) or, for those who already have a Master s Degree, a Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study (CAGS) from Fitchburg State University. A typical plan of study for the MEd includes: CES Licensure Program courses required for licensure (18 credits) 18 additional credits (CES offers all additional courses required for the Master s) To earn a graduate degree, the candidate must submit a program application to Fitchburg State University. Application forms are available online at fitchburgstate. edu or from the CES Licensure Program. Application to the Fitchburg State University graduate program is encouraged before starting a second course at CES. Subject to approval by Fitchburg State University, up to 12 credits may be transferred to the degree program, six of which may come from another university or college. Credit must have been earned within the year prior to admission. Teacher of English as a Second Language (PreK-6, 5-12) Teacher of Students with Moderate Disabilities (PreK-8, 5-12) When should I enroll in the CES Licensure Program? You may formally enroll in the CES Licensure Program before you take any courses or, if you want to test the waters first, you may take up to two individual courses prior to enrollment in the program. (A maximum of two CES Licensure courses may be transferred into an Initial Licensure program.)

4 Details Course Options Any course may be taken either as part of an Initial License preparation program or individually for professional enrichment and/or license renewal. Courses may be taken for: Professional Development Points (PDPs) Graduate Credit (additional cost) Master s Degree or CAGS from Fitchburg State University (additional required courses and cost) Courses meet requirements for both an Initial License in one or more fields and Fitchburg State University graduate degree programs available through CES. Courses may also be used toward the 12-credit option for the Professional License (if not already used in your Initial License program). Important Information A $75 late fee will be applied to all registrations received after 5:00pm on the deadline date noted for each course. A maximum class size is set for each course. Registrations will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis, and must include payment. If the number of registrations for a course exceeds the maximum seats available or is too low to be able to conduct a quality learning experience, the Collaborative will inform you of available options. Course Transfers A maximum of two CES licensure courses taken prior to enrollment in the CES Licensure Program may be transferred to a program leading to teacher endorsement. Two CES licensure courses completed successfully within the past five years and in your program area will be accepted toward your license. The tuition fee for the 6-course ESL program is $7,300. Graduate credit is available for an additional fee. As of July 1, 2014 each CES Licensure program except ESL includes seven courses and a practicum. One of the seven courses is the RETELL course, an ESE-approved pre-service course leading to the SEI Endorsement. Graduate Credit The cost per course for 3 graduate credits through Fitchburg State University is $325. Payment by credit card or check to Collaborative for Educational Services is due at the first class meeting. Course Format All courses are offered in a hybrid-online format that combines online coursework through the Moodle Course Management System with face-to-face class sessions (see course listings for session details). Face-to-face sessions are a critical component of each course; attendance at all sessions is mandatory. Inclement Weather Any delays or cancellations are posted online at collaborative.org. CES Continuing Education Loans Students enrolled in CES Licensure programs, as well as those seeking Master s Degrees and CAGS through Fitchburg State University, have the option to finance their programs with loans through UMassFive College Federal Credit Union (umassfive.org). Loan details: secure.umassfive.org/ces_student_loan Introduction to Educational Technology 3 This course explores the value of technology integration for teaching, learning, and curriculum development. Participants also examine the use of technology as a change agent in schools. Participants are exposed to the variety of technology tools and resources (many web-based) to strengthen instructional strategies, deepen understanding of particular content, and make teaching materials more accessible to a heterogenous population of students. 5 Spring 2015 Theory and Practice in Fostering Literacy in a New Language This course offers an introduction to pedagogical approaches to reading and writing instruction for both English Language Learners (ELLs) and students of foreign or world languages; an overview of best practices to enhance literacy development within content area curriculum; an in-depth examination of the learning needs of students for whom English is a second language at different stages of proficiency (including those with limited or interrupted formal schooling); an analysis of the differences between foreign and second language teaching practices to promote literacy; and, a survey of authentic and effective methods of assessing growth in language students reading and writing. MARLBOROUGH Instructor(s): Carmelo Chiello License(s): English as a Second Language (ESL) Free Information Sessions Theory and Practice in Sheltering Instruction This course is an introduction to the field of second language acquisition (SLA) at different age and proficiency levels with a focus on factors and instructional approaches that directly impact the second language classroom. Students will examine the World-Class Instructional Design and Assessment (WIDA) Proficiency Descriptors as a starting point for setting goals for English Language Learners (ELLs) based on proficiency levels in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. This course is designed to promote continuous improvement in educator practice and to build teachers confidence and familiarity with research-proven practices for working with ELLs in a sheltered instruction context. Throughout the course, effective research-based strategies will be modeled. Teachers will have opportunities to learn the components of a sheltered lesson, practice the modeled strategies, analyze their practice, provide and receive feedback, and reflect on their experiences. Through this cycle of reflective practice, teachers will gain new skills, knowledge, and dispositions for the education of English learners. Students are expected to effectively implement each of these elements into a typical classroom study with a theoretical understanding of why particular instructional decisions are being made.
