1 1 ReadyGEN Assessment Introduction Hi, and welcome to My Pearson Training. In this tutorial, you ll learn about the various assessment opportunities included in ReadyGEN and how ReadyGEN links assessment to instruction so that you can teach thoughtfully and responsively. 1

2 2 Comprehensive Assessment System ReadyGEN's comprehensive approach to assessment provides multiple opportunities to monitor student progress toward college and career readiness. ReadyGEN's three-step plan of Assessment for Instruction includes a beginning-of-the-year baseline assessment, formative assessments for every lesson and performance-based assessments for every module, and a summative, end-of-unit assessment. You can find assessment resources in the Assessment Book Teacher's Manual, Assessment Student Book, and the Teacher's Guide. 2

3 3 Assessment Book Teacher s Manual The Assessment Book Teacher's Manual provides an overview of the ReadyGEN assessment system. The Teacher's Manual includes test administration information as well as answer keys, rubrics, and charts for scoring and recording student performance on the various tests. It also offers tips for assessing English language learners and provides fluency and running record information. 3

4 4 Assessment Student Book The consumable Assessment Student Book contains the student Baseline and End-of-Unit Assessments. 4

5 5 Beginning- of- Year Assessments To determine your students' instructional needs at the beginning of the year, use the ReadyGEN Baseline Assessment and the Beginning-of-Year Fluency Test and Running Record. 5

6 6 Baseline Assessment The Baseline Assessment evaluates student proficiency in foundational skills, listening and reading comprehension, vocabulary, and writing. 6

7 7 Beginning- of- Year Fluency Test and Running Record The Beginning-of-Year Fluency Test and Running Record provide students' oral reading rate and oral reading accuracy. This information can help identify a student's potential strengths and weaknesses in reading and language development. It can also help you tailor your instruction during whole-group and small-group instruction to ensure all students experience success. You can use the results of these assessments to establish a starting point for each student in your class and to identify individuals who are on grade level, those who need more support, and those who could benefit from additional challenge. Based upon a student's Baseline Assessment score and Beginning-of-Year Running Record, ReadyGEN provides a suggested instructional plan that guides you to various program components in order to best support each student. 7

8 8 Formative Assessments Students are assessed formatively throughout ReadyGEN lessons using Reading Keystones, Writing Keystone Checklists, Check Progress formative assessments, and the Reader's and Writer's Journal. Reading Keystones assess students' understanding of key language, structures, and ideas. Writing Keystone Checklists assess students' opinion, narrative, or informative writing. These Keystones highlight what students know and are able to do, helping to track student progress toward the Performance-Based Assessment at the end of each module. The Check Progress assessments are provided at the end of every unit to assess students' phonics or wordanalysis skills. These formative assessments help students make progress toward mastery of the foundational skills. You can use the Reader's and Writer's Journal during whole-group and small-group instruction to provide students with opportunities to practice what they have learned during each lesson. You can review your students' Reader's and Writer's Journals to check for understanding and application of the material taught. 8

9 9 Instructional Support for Assessment Look to the Scaffolded Strategies Handbook to further support students in unlocking text, writing, and language learning. The handbook contains deeper, targeted support, tools, and strategies for English language learners, students who struggle with reading, and students who need additional challenge. Look to the Assessment Book Teacher's Manual for instructional strategies to help prepare English language learners for formal assessments, as well as appropriate accommodations for use during test administration. In addition, the Assessment Book Teacher's Manual offers two tools to assist you in evaluating student progress in your class: a Profile of English Language Learners checklist and an Observing English Language Learners form. 9

10 10 Performance- Based Assessments ReadyGEN's Performance-Based Assessments allow students to connect their learning through reading, writing, and exploring text at the end of each module. The Enduring Understandings, Essential Questions, and module goals have been mapped backward to the Performance-Based Assessments. This backward mapping ensures cohesive and coherent connections across lessons and ultimately leads to assessment mastery. Look to the Teacher's Guide for an overview of the Performance-Based Assessment for each module, including what to review with students, best practices in administration, suggestions for scaffolded support, and rubrics for evaluating student writing. 10

11 11 Administration Suggestions Look to the Assessment Book Teacher's Manual for information about administering Performance-Based Assessments. It is suggested that you administer an assessment over multiple sessions. Consider the following factors when establishing time allocation. First consider your students' prior experience: How many Performance-Based Assessments have they taken up to this point? Think about primary versus intermediate tasks: Intermediate or more complex Performance-Based Assessments are likely to require additional time on task. Finally, think about scaffolding: Are you using the Performance-Based Assessment as an opportunity to teach students how to take the assessment, or is it being used to assess performance? If you are using all of the scaffolds that appear in the Scaffolded Strategies Handbook, the Performance-Based Assessment will take longer to administer. 11

12 12 End- of- Unit Assessments End-of-Unit Assessments are the third step of ReadyGEN's plan for Assessment of Instruction. These summative assessments evaluate student progress in reading comprehension, vocabulary analysis, and writing. The End-of-Unit Assessment consists of two passages. Each passage is followed by multiple-choice comprehension and vocabulary questions and a constructed-response writing prompt. For students in Grades K and 1, the passages are read aloud or read together. Students in Grades 2 through 6 read the passages independently. At the end of the assessment, there is also an extended-response writing prompt that requires students to draw on information from both of the passages. 12

13 13 Online Assessment Administration Large-scale assessments have been developed in an effort to determine students' college and career readiness. The ReadyGEN End-of-Unit Assessments and portions of the Baseline Assessments are modeled after expectations for these tests. Online test administration helps students become familiar with the types of items they will encounter on large-scale assessments, and also allows for automatic scoring and comprehensive reporting. In addition, you can build your own assessments on Pearson Realize using teacher-created multiple-choice and gridded-response items. Please note: The End-of-Unit Assessment includes averages derived from hand-scored and automatically scored items. The Mastery Report shows no data until hand-scored items are entered for all students who submitted the assessment. 14 14 Technology- Enhanced Items Technology-enhanced items are responses that go beyond the traditional multiple-choice and selected- or constructed-response item types. Drag-and-drop exercises are one example. Technology-enhanced items will appear on the ReadyGEN Baseline Assessment for Grades 2 through 6, and on all End-of-Unit Assessments, as well as on the Program-Agnostic Balanced Performance Tasks. 14

15 15 Program- Agnostic Practice Tests ReadyGEN's College and Career Readiness and Balanced Practice Tests and Performance Tasks are intended to prepare students for next-generation assessment challenges, with new item types based on released models. Practice Tests and Performance Tasks will familiarize students with the various item types that will appear in nextgeneration assessments such as: Technology-enhanced items Evidence-based selected-response items Constructed-response items, and Extended-response items These program-agnostic tests are available online only via Pearson Realize, and are not available in paper and pencil format. 15

16 16 Realize Data The Data tab of Pearson Realize provides class and student data, including standards mastery, overall progress, and time on task. You can also view data individually by student from the class assignment list.
