Assessment Support Introduction This guide explores envisionmath Texas 2.0 assessment support. Placement Test It examines the variety of formal and informal assessments built into the program, explains how to use assessment data to inform instruction, and discovers how the assessments will help you to prepare students for the state test. Assessment support begins at the very beginning of the year. The Placement Test available in print or online checks your students mastery of concepts from the previous year. Items on the Placement Test correlate to the previous grade s Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) standards. Have your students take the online Placement Test through Pearson Realize to automatically score their results. View reports online and use the data to identify TEKS standards that need review. 1
Topic Assessments Begin each topic with Review What You Know, which is a short assessment in the student edition. These questions activate and assess prior knowledge that students will need in the upcoming topic. Students can also complete Review What You Know online through the ACTIVe-book. Assess your students mastery of the concepts and skills in a topic with the Topic Test. Have your students take the Topic Test in their student editions or online through Pearson Realize. Or, use either of the two alternate versions from the Teacher s Resource Masters books. All forms of the Topic Test contain multiple-choice and gridded-response questions to help students prepare for the state test. Print versions also contain short-answer items. Take advantage of the reports on Pearson Realize and item analysis information to simultaneously evaluate your students progress and plan future instruction. 2
Performance Tasks Give students a cognitively demanding task by assigning the Performance Task at the end of each topic. This assessment includes several open-ended questions that require students to use problemsolving skills. Find masters, scoring rubrics, and answer keys in the Texas Assessment Resources Teacher s Guide. There is a four-point rubric for each Performance Task that outlines four levels of achievement for students understanding of the concepts and skills in that topic. 3
Lesson Assessments Closely monitor your students progress throughout every lesson. Find suggested questions that you can ask during Problem-Based Learning and with the Visual Learning Bridge. Question students to check for understanding. Use examples of students work to know what to watch for. Have your students complete the Do You Understand? question to verify comprehension directly after instruction. Use your students responses to decide if you need to revisit any part of the lesson before moving on. 4
Practice Observe your students as they complete the Guided Practice section in the student edition or ACTIVe-book. Find error intervention tips in the Teacher s Edition to provide focused remediation. Assign Reteaching Sets when necessary. Use your students work on the Independent Practice section to prescribe differentiated instruction. Three exercises, indicated by check marks in the Teacher s Edition, give you a quick way to assess your students progress. Based on those quick-check exercises, provide targeted instruction, including Intervention Activities; Reteaching pages; On-Level and Advanced Activity Centers; and Leveled Homework assignments. When students complete the Quick Check online, the program automatically assigns remediation based on the results. 5
Cumulative Assessments Give the multiple-choice Benchmark Test at the end of every four topics. Use this to determine the TEKS that students have mastered and to identify TEKS that require further instruction. Analyze students responses with the Item Analysis for Diagnosis and Intervention to identify appropriate Intervention Lessons. Find an online version of this test with automatic scoring on Pearson Realize. After completing all sixteen topics, give the End-of-Year Test. Use data from this test to predict state test readiness and evaluate mastery of the TEKS. Assign this test online through Pearson Realize or find the blackline master in your Teacher s Resource Masters book. An Item Analysis for Diagnosis and Intervention is available in your Teacher s Edition. 6
State Test Preparation Utilize the Daily TEKS Review that is included in every lesson. Continuously monitor students progress toward mastery of the TEKS. Assign the Daily TEKS Review through Pearson Realize or distribute copies from the Teacher s Resource Masters book. Find two Practice Tests that mirror the length and format of the state test in the Texas Assessment Resources Teacher s Guide. Each test question correlates to the TEKS. Use the Practice Test Report to identify and address any TEKS that require individual or class attention. Math Diagnosis and Intervention System 2.0 Use the Math Diagnosis and Intervention System 2.0 (MDIS 2.0) to identify and diagnose students misconceptions and assign appropriate intervention. Students can take a Diagnostic Test at the beginning of the year. Asses prerequisite knowledge by administering the test for the grade level below or give the current grade level s test as a pretest. Score the tests, record the scores on the Class Record Form, and use the results to help make placement decisions. Throughout the year, use the Item Analysis for Diagnosis and Intervention alongside formal assessments to identify what TEKS students have not yet mastered and to choose appropriate Intervention Lessons. Use lessons to supplement your own teaching or as stand-alone intervention. The MDIS 2.0 is available in print and online through Pearson Realize. Assign Diagnostic Tests and Intervention Lessons to students, access Teacher s Guides, or download PDFs online. 7
Digital Extras Create assessments, quizzes, study guides, and worksheets with the ExamView Test Generator. Find multiple-question formats, pictures, tables, graphs, and charts when you install this software. Draw from banks of premade test questions. Customize your tests to match TEKS and align to your district framework. Take advantage of the flexibility built into Pearson Realize by customizing assessments to meet your needs. Change settings, add or remove questions, and edit the content of the questions and answer choices. Add your own content by uploading files, adding links, or building your own online assessments. Review This guide examined envisionmath Texas 2.0 assessment support. It explored the variety of formal and informal assessments built into the program, explained how to use assessment data to inform instruction, and discovered how the assessments will help you to prepare students for the state test. 8
