Prerequisite for the Grant The minimum requirement to receive the Finnish Study Grant is 4.8 credits of studies per each study support month. Courses exempted based on earlier studies from other institutions are not counted. STUDIES Planning and Timing International Business studies are based on lectures, assignments and independent studies. Studies in Kymenlaakso UAS require a lot of independent work. Each student designs an individual study plan (ISP/hops). The first year plan should be detailed, but the plans for the coming years are revised annually with the Group Tutor. The study plan is made during the orientation studies. The student counsellor checks the individual study plans of the first year students. Making your own study plan helps you in your studies. A plan for independent studies should also be made. Make sure that your studies are proceeding regularly and that all the degree requirements are fulfilled. The students are requested to attend lectures regularly and arrive in time for the lectures. International Studies and Work Placement International business students are required to deepen their internationalisation by studying or working abroad for one semester (approximately half a year). Note: Foreign students fulfil this requirement by already studying in Finland. Kymenlaakso UAS has a double degree agreement with the German Fachhochschule Stralsund.
Within the IB&M programme European partners of Kymenlaakso UAS in Norway, Germany, France, Spain and the Netherlands offer a similar study year. Virtual Studies Summer term Study material Study records Annual registration There is a wide selection of different kinds of studies offered virtually by different Universities of Applied Sciences in Finland. You are encouraged to check the courses offered at and and if you find an interesting course, contact Ms Virpi Kukkola The decision is made by Head of Programme, Ms Ulla Puustelli. Information on the International Summer Term can be found at More detailed information on courses offered in the International Summer Term 2009 is available in the spring In order to succeed in your studies, please make sure that you have all the necessary study material mentioned in the study guide and stated at the beginning of the lectures. This is even more important for those students who are studying in a foreign language. Structure of the studies is described in detail in the study guide on the net. The most crucial thing to remember is that students should follow the study records themselves, for example using Winha. Students have to register for being present or absent during the study year. Registration for courses For all courses students have to register in Winha before the beginning of the course. This automatically registers you for the first exam. In case you don t intend to participate in the exam, you have to cancel in writing at least one week before the exam. The cancellation must be submitted to the student administration office. Registration for exams Only after registering as being present students are allowed to participate in an exam given at the end of the course.
For a re-sit exam students have to register in Winha at least seven (7) days before the date of the exam. In case you don t intend to participate in the exam, you have to cancel in writing at least one week before the exam. The cancellation must be submitted to the student administration office. Re-sit exams The re-sits are usually given on Thursdays from until If you have failed in an exam you can take a re-sit twice within a year from the first exam. Re-sit exams dates can be found under the department Intranet. Check which exams can be taken on each re-sit date on the intranet, notice board or student administration office. General re-sits: 28 May 2009 is a general re-sit date for any exam. Students may only participate in a maximum of two exams on a resit date. Be careful when signing up for an exam in order to receive the appropriate paper. In case of uncertainty please contact the relevant lecturer. Students can check in Winha ISP-Enrolments to ensure that they have managed to sign up correctly. See Degree Regulations 6.3 Enrolment in study units and exams. Exam arrangements The exam time starts when all the participants have received their papers. The exam time varies between 2 4 hours. Students must be present in an exam and in a re-exam for at least 30 minutes. After that time any student who arrives late will not be allowed to participate in the exam. Students who leave the exam room will not be allowed back into the room. Remember to have your ID-card in case it needs to be checked. Dictionaries may not be used in exams. The use of during computing exams is forbidden.
Remember to write your name, student number, study group, course and the name of the lecturer on all papers. All the exam question and answer papers must be submitted to the supervisor of the exam. Cheating in an exam will result in severe penalties for the student(s) concerned. The exam is failed. See Exam regulations and the file No Cheating! in the Intranet for more details. Course results Results for each course will be announced within four (4) weeks of completion of the study period. They can be seen in Winha. From Winha a copy can be taken of study results if needed. An official copy is given twice a year free of charge. If you want to improve your pass mark you can re-sit the exam once during one year after the first approved exam. Exam papers are not returned to the students but students may see the papers by arrangement with the relevant lecturer. Students have a right to see the criteria of the assessment. Exam papers are retained by lecturers for a period of 6 months. Assessment The marks given in a course/exam are: 5 (excellent), 4 3 (good) and 2 1 (satisfactory) or S (accepted). A failed exam will be shown as 0 on the register. If a student fails an exam three (3) times, the student must contact the lecturer. If a student registers for an exam and does not turn up, then the student has lost one of the exam opportunities. See Degree Regulations for more details. Exemption from courses Courses recognised from other institutions can be substituted into the Bachelor s Degree Programme. Tertiary (higher) education level is the usual requirement for course exemptions. In order to get an exemption from a course, take the relevant certificates and study programmes to the relevant lecturer to negotiate on the recognition. This needs to be done during the first term.
After negotiating with the lecturer fill in a form (obtained from the student administration office or student counsellor) together with the lecturer and place it in the pigeonhole or send it by mail to the Programme Head, Ms Ulla Puustelli. The Programme Head makes the decision on accreditation. Leadership training during military service can give 3 credits (auk) or 6 credits (ruk) to your free-choice studies. Lecture Pass By attending the lectures of guest lecturers or other specialists you can collect credits to your Lecture Pass. More detailed regulations are written on the Pass, available in the student administration office. Work Placement The Bachelor s Degree in International Business includes a fivemonth work placement. The practical training consists of 40 working days basic training (12 credits, 2 months/320 hours) and 60 working days specialisation training (18 credits, 3 months/480 hours). Counselling on basic training placements is taken care of by Ms Ulla Puustelli. Counselling on specialisation training placements is taken care of by Ms Ulla Puustelli in International Trade specialisation and by Mr Kai Koski in International Marketing specialisation. Each student must find a work placement by themselves. This work placement is subject to the approval of the person responsible for training. Please contact Ms Puustelli BEFORE you start your training. Detailed information in Moodle (Practical Training) Bachelor s Thesis The required dissertation (15 credits) is written at the end of the studies. Remember to start writing it early enough.
