4 Why Be a Mentor? The more you lose yourself in something bigger than yourself, the more energy you will have. ~Norman Vincent Peale The unfortunate need people who will be kind to them; the prosperous need people to be kind to. ~Aristotle I long to accomplish a great and noble task, but it is my chief duty to accomplish small tasks as if they were great and noble. ~Helen Keller We make a living by what we get, we make a life by what we give. ~Winston Churchill Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has. ~Margaret Mead Do not wait for leaders; do it alone, person to person. ~Mother Teresa Those who are not looking for happiness are the most likely to find it, because those who are searching forget that the surest way to be happy is to seek happiness for others. ~Martin Luther King, Jr. We cannot live only for ourselves. A thousand fibers connect us with our fellow-men; and along those fibers, as sympathetic threads, our actions run as causes, and they come back to us as effects. ~Herman Melville The greatest virtues are those which are most useful to other persons. ~Aristotle Caring about others, running the risk of feeling, and leaving an impact on people, brings happiness. ~Rabbi Harold Kushner When you become detached mentally from yourself and concentrate on helping other people with their difficulties, you will be able to cope with your own more effectively. Somehow, the act of self-giving is a personal power-releasing factor. ~Norman Vincent Peale To laugh often and love much; to win the respect of intelligent persons and the affection of children, to earn the approbation of honest critics; to appreciate beauty; to give of one s self, to leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch or a redeemed social condition; to have played and laughed with enthusiasm and sung with exultation; to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived that is to have succeeded. ~Ralph Waldo Emerson

5 QUALITIES OF A SUCCESSFUL MENTOR Personal commitment to be involved with a group of students for an extended time full school year. Classroom Mentors have a genuine desire to be part of a group of student s lives, to help them with tough decisions and to see them becomee the best they can be. Respect for individual students and the group for their abilities and their right to make their own choices in life. Mentors should not approach the students with the attitude thatt their own ways are better or that participants need to be rescued. Mentors who convey a sense of respect and equal dignity in the relationship win the trust of their class and the privilegee of being an advisor to them. Ability to listen and to accept different points of view. Most people can find someone who will give advice or express opinions. It s much harder to find someone who will suspend his or her own judgment and really listen. Mentors often help simply by listening, asking thoughtful questions and givingg students an opportunity to explore their own thoughts with a minimum of interference. When people feel accepted, they are more likely to ask for and respond to good ideas. Ability to empathize with another person s struggles. Effective mentors can feel empathy with people without feeling pity for them. Even without having had the same life experiences, they can empathize with their students feelings and personal problems. Ability to see solutions and opportunities as well as barriers. Effective mentors balance a realistic respect for the real and serious problems faced by their students with optimism about finding equally realistic solutions. They are able to make sense of a seeming jumble of issues and point out sensible alternatives. Flexibility and openness. Effective mentors recognize that relationships take time to develop and that communication is a two way street. They are willing to take time to get to know their students, to learn new things that are important to their students (music, styles, philosophies, etc.), and even to be changed by their relationship.
