Converting Movies and Uploading to Your ipad

1 More and more professionals are eschewing the weight and bulk of a laptop and using the many options available on their ipad for typical presentation duties. Often times, we have videos that accompany the presentation material that we would like to show, but the process of converting and placing these videos on the ipad can be a little confusing. In this handout, we ll cover using a freelyavailable application to handle converting most video file types to one that the ipad will accept, and one that itunes will allow us to sync to our ipad. This process will work for any generation ipad - including the original ipad, ipad 2, the New ipad/retina, and ipad mini. Downloading Handbrake To convert our videos for viewing on the ipad - we re going to use a free application - Handbrake. Handbrake may be downloaded for Windows, Mac, and Linux Operating Systems, and is available right from the downloads section of their site: Caution: Make sure you are downloading the correct version (32- bit or 64-bit) based on your operating system! Once you ve downloaded the application - install as appropriate for Windows or Mac using the included files.

2 Using Handbrake Now that we have the application installed, we can run it and begin the process of getting our videos converted! This will work for most modern camcorders with proprietary file formats, and videos we ve downloaded from Lync or Adobe Connect recordings, Flash movies, and not commonly seen file formats like Matroska (.mkv files). Begin by opening the application. 1.) Open Handbrake by double-clicking on the icon in Applications (Mac), or clicking the shortcut in the Start Menu (Windows). 2.) You ll immediately see the file selection window open, asking for the Source or the video you would like to convert. Select the file you d like to make available on the ipad, and hit Open or OK. 3.) Once you ve selected your video, you should confirm the source information meets your expectations, and choose the destination where the converted video will reside, along with it s name, if you feel that needs changing.

3 4.) Next, we ll use a very handy feature of Handbrake that makes conversion incredibly simple - the presets! Click on the Toggle Presets window to display the list of devices that Handbrake has conversion settings already configured. We ll be selecting the ipad preset. This ensures that our converted video is set for what itunes expects us to use: mp4 or m4v file encoded with H.264 and AAC audio. 5.) Once you ve confirmed the settings, press the start button, and it will start converting! Source: The file you wish to be converted Destination: File name and location where converted file will be saved Output Settings: ipad Format: MP4 file

4 6.) When your conversion is finished - Handbrake will alert you with a novel dialog box: 7.) You should see the converted file in the location you specified under Destination. Now, let s put that file on your ipad! 8.) Open itunes, and connect your ipad to computer. 9.) Drag the movie file from your Destination to the itunes Library (it will change colors when you have it right!) and then release. 10.) The file will then be in the Movies tab of your itunes Library. 11.) To sync the file to the ipad, ensure that the Sync Movies box is checked in the Movies tab of the ipad you are wishing to sync the file to.

5 12.) Hit Apply, allow the ipad to sync, and you re done!
