Roding Roadster Electric with RACE architecture Page 2
Automotive players face a variety of questions Why do we need new E/E (electrical/ electronic) concepts for the automotive industry in the future? Page 3
Today: Over 100 Electrical Control Units (ECUs) in a premium car ~ One ECU per major function Page 4
Motivation for development of RACE (Reliable Automation and Control Environment) Today: Leading German Automotive OEMs agree that the amount of ECUs will not increase in future cars Future: Opportunity with RACE > 100 ECUs in premium cars Automotive OEMs are facing challenges to master key functions themselves face limitations to add further functions in vehicles depend on (few) tier1 automotive suppliers Page 5 Shortened E/E development process (by ~ 30%) Possibility to add new functions à la Plug&Play even after sales allowing development towards autonomous driving, fulfilling safety requirements
In the future: Future cars with a centrally/hierarchically organized RACE systems Reduced complexity by having functional ECUs replaced by RACE Page 6
Automotive players face a variety of questions Which technology fits best to my current and future platforms? Page 7
RACE architecture replaces dedicated functional ECUs # of HW components and wiring # of functions Enables easy, fast and cheap integration of (new) vehicle functions through SW Reduced complexity through open, standardized RACE platform: Lower number of hardware components Less wiring Multi-use of sensors and actuators (standard HW components) for several functions Optimized for safety-critical demands, fulfilling highest safety & reliability standards (ISO26262) Plug&Play capability; non-intrusive fault injection Allows stepwise integration, starting with replacing selected functions up to full functionality RACE fulfills today s as well as future requirements for highly automated/ autonomous driving Page 8
Overview of RACE core components Functional software to realize system/ application specific functionality, e.g. RACE: Software and hardware to realize safe data transport, fail safe behavior and Plug & Play. Smart sensors and actuators to detect what is going on and to interact with the environment. OEMs Siemens TIER x Steering Radar Cooling & heating Auto pilot General Purpose RACE Controller (HW) Runtime Environment & OS (SW) I/O-Expander as Sensor/ Actuator Connector (HW) Camera Motor Battery Engineering System Page 9
Siemens offers a full RACE portfolio Innovative technologies for both, current and future platforms General Purpose RACE Controller Software (RTE) I/O-Expander Platform for engineering, test, verification and analysis Page 10
New automotive E/E architectures are becoming reality Can I buy it? What is your timeline? YES! Samples will be shipped in the next months to a lead customer in the Special Purpose Vehicles industry. In 2017 series production will start. Page 11
New automotive E/E architectures are becoming reality Do you have references? Page 12 Beginning of 2016, six vehicles equipped with RACE will drive on German streets. Since 2014 we are in close cooperation with the special purpose vehicles OEM StreetScooter (a DHL company). Our hardware is Made-in-Germany by an automotive-qualified manufacturing plant.
Siemens is the right partner for entering the new E/E era in automotive Since 2009 we deeply analyzed ICT in automotive we gathered a full understanding of the challenges, needs and future drivers We since have developed relevant tools and components along the whole process chain in-house, including our own test bench, system engineering tools and two vehicles equipped with RACE Our open RACE platform allows to individually integrate hardware components (e.g. sensors/ actuators) and software components from suppliers most suitable for your requirements It all adds up so let s get to work! Page 13
Thank you for your kind attention We are looking forward to hearing from you Karl-Josef Kuhn Head of CT NTF RACE Otto-Hahn-Ring München Phone: +49 (89) karl-josef.kuhn@siemens.com siemens.com Page 14
