8 Call Part I: Growth business from health outcomes The motivation for the call of proposals is related to business opportunities, which arise from a global need to shift healthcare focus from medical treatment to health promotion and prevention of illnesses. Call for research and development projects aiming at renewal and international growth of the Finnish health and wellbeing sector. Multidisciplinary research projects that are carried out by research institutions (universities, research institutes and polytechnics) and networked with industry (10% co-funding required). Joint projects by companies and research organizations Projects by individual companies and joint projects by company consortia

10 Call guidelines Call Part I: Growth business from health outcomes We encourage the applicants to make proposals that demonstrate Radical thinking, solution orientation, holistic understanding of needs, bold renewal, multidisciplinary teams All research topics should have potential for the development of new international business. Digitalization is radically shaping all industries including healthcare sector Role of data in health & wellness: collection, analytics, security, utilization transformation of consumer products into high added-value products and services which are accepted for health care use development of medical devices that are more customer-oriented, which lowers the threshold of their use among citizens. In this call Tekes will not provide research & development funding for public service providers (municipalities, hospital districts).

11 Call guidelines Call Part I: Growth business from health outcomes Examples of needs that a project may target: increasing the role of the individual in the promotion of his/her own health and participation in the treatment of his/her illnesses increasing customer-orientation of healthcare services by involving citizens and professionals in the development of products and services. activating individuals, for example by utilizing electronic services and methods of independent monitoring and self-care and by making transactions with experts and medical staff easier. reliably monitoring the state of health, independently of place and time. diagnosing illnesses at earlier stages, faster and easier than before. analyzing and combining health and patient data from different sources efficiently for the benefit of the individual. analyzing and combining health data for development of new diagnostics and therapies targeting therapies more accurately to those who most benefit out of them and preventing adverse effects. ensuring and demonstrating the effectiveness of new practices, processes, devices and applications to be developed.

Projects by individual companies and joint projects by company consortia ( yritysprojektit )

Research organizations as applicants: Collaborative research with enterprises ( Elinkeinoelämän kanssa verkottunut tutkimus ) Projects must aim at generation and application of new knowledge and results, which contribute to the renewal of industries and generation of new entrepreneurial activities Proposals must demonstrate significant novelty and address a potentially large business opportunity The project must include several partner companies, who commit into monitoring and guiding the project. In addition, other organizations e.g. public service providers may also be involved. The project shall have a steering group with representatives from companies and other parties important from the viewpoint of utilization of the research results. At least 10% of project s total costs have to be covered through co-funding from partner organizations (companies and other organizations) that are potentially utilizing the research results Project execution plan describing objectives, tasks, resources and key milestones that are essential for the utilization of research results has to be included in the application Tekes funding share is 60% or 70% of the project's total costs.

Joint projects by companies and research organizations ( yritysten ja tutkimusorganisaatioiden rinnakkaisprojektit ) The motivation of joint projects arise from companies' research and business renewal needs. A joint project includes companies' own R&D projects and a parallel public research project conducted by research organizations. In joint projects, companies' total costs must be at least 50% of the total joint project volume, if company partners are SMEs (min. 3 company partners needed) In joint projects, companies' total costs must be at least 70% of the total joint project volume if company partners are large corporations In addition to each partner s own project plans, a shared general level description about the aims, tasks and results of the joint project must be included

Projects by individual companies and joint projects by company consortia ( yritysprojektit ) Companies and company consortia are encouraged to apply for funding for research, development and innovation projects the aim of which is international growth and business renewal. In particular, Tekes encourages building new business ecosystems, increased customer-orientation and piloting of new solutions in real-life settings. Tekes standard funding criteria and funding levels for company projects will be applied. There will be changes starting !

16 Grasping the opportunities in Horizon 2020 Call Part I: Growth business from health outcomes The health theme is prominently displayed in Horizon Tekes encourages the applicants to make efficient use of various funding sources and to design a path towards global cooperation e.g. the following H-2020 calls: Advancing active and healthy ageing PHC : Advancing active and healthy ageing with ICT: Early risk detection and intervention Integrated, sustainable, citizen-centred care PHC : Advanced ICT systems and services for Integrated Care PHC : Self-management of health and disease and patient empowerment supported by ICT PHC : Self-management of health and disease and decision support systems based on predictive computer modelling used by the patient him or herself PHC : Public procurement of innovative ehealth services Improving health information, data exploitation and providing an evidence base for health policies and regulation PHC : Digital representation of health data to improve disease diagnosis and treatment PHC : New approaches to improve predictive human safety testing NOTE! 17 Call Part II: Encounters between excellent science and business To promote cooperation between top-level research and industry and to enhance commercial utilization of research results, Tekes calls for research proposals from research groups that have been funded by the Academy of Finland s health council. Participation in this part of the call is exclusive to research groups that are conducting an Academy project ( Akatemiahanke ) launched in in the health research field research groups belonging to the Centre of Excellence programs in the health research field. Note: Individual researchers ( Akatemiatutkija ) are not eligible for applying in this call

18 Call guidelines Call Part II: Encounters between excellent science and business Funding principles and criteria Research organizations as applicants: Collaborative research with enterprises ( Elinkeinoelämän kanssa verkottunut tutkimus ) Research project proposals have to apply the basic research carried out in an Academy project or in a Centre of Excellence and aim at utilization of research results by enterprises or creation of new entrepreneurial activities Project execution plan describing objectives, tasks, resources and key milestones that are essential for the utilization of research results has to be included in the application The application must clearly describe how the project will create new cooperation practices between leading edge research and companies.

19 Call guidelines Call Part II: Encounters between excellent science and business Funding principles and criteria: The project must include at least three partner companies, who commit into monitoring and guiding the project and long-term cooperation with the research unit. The project shall have a steering group with representatives from companies and other parties important from the viewpoint of utilization of the research results and long-term industry-academia cooperation. At least 10% of project s total costs have to be covered through cofunding from partner organizations (companies and other organizations) that are potentially utilizing the research results A grant of maximum 350,000 euros per applicant for maximum project duration of two years. Tekes funding share is 60% of the project's total costs.

21 Application process Call published Information and networking event Applicant s day (sparrauspäivä) at Tekes Individual min meetings with Tekes advisers to get feedback and guidance, appointments to be booked in advance A summary of the proposal must be provided in advance (latest ), structured template will be provided All applicants are required to discuss with Tekes prior to proposal submission! Call deadline Full application with all appendixes: project plan, participation and co-funding statements from companies / other organizations

22 Practicalities about the application submission Joint projects (multiple applicants) must have a common project title/heading. All partners in joint projects (multiple applicants) must submit their application before the deadline. In the application forms, select participation in the Terveyttä biteistä (Bits of health) program all applicants!
