4 1 Introduction This document is intended to assist LANDesk customers install and configure Microsoft* SQL Server* 2000 for their LANDesk Management Suite 8 installation. Once the database has been installed and configured, refer to the product documentation in the Docs folder on the LANDesk Management Suite 8 CD or in the location the files were extracted from the web download. 2 Parameters needed by Management Suite Management Suite needs the following parameters. The following options marked by a 1 are mainly performance settings or ones that LANDesk Software has done significant testing with but may not be necessary. 2.1 Installation options These parameters will be set by default if you use a Typical install for SQL 2000: Use the ISO character set. 1 Use the Dictionary order, case insensitive Sort Order. Use TCP/IP Sockets as the network protocol Inventory database parameters Set the transaction log size to approximately 1/4th your data size. This is especially important for Mode=All software scans that can be several MB in size. Set the Recovery Model to Simple. 2.3 Other settings Use sa or another user aliased into the database as DBO when creating the database. Set up a database maintenance plan. Details will be provided later in this document. 4

5 3 Installing SQL 2000 for Management Suite 3.1 SQL 2000 step 1: Install SQL Log in to the Windows 2000 server as administrator or equivalent. 2. Insert the CD (or copy the CD to your hard drive) and run SETUP.BAT. If you're selecting from the Autorun window, click SQL Server 2000 Components and then Install Database Server. 3. On the Welcome window, click Next. 4. On the Computer Name window, select Local Computer. 5. Click Next. 6. On the Installation Selection window, select Create a new instance of SQL Server, or install Client Tools. 7. Click Next. 8. On the User Information window, enter a Name and Company. 9. Click Next. 10. On the Software License Agreement window, click Yes after verifying license information. 11. On the Installation Definition window, select Server and Client Tools. 12. Click Next. 13. On the Instance Name window, verify that the Default box is checked. 14. Click Next. 15. On the Setup Type window, select Typical. 16. Change the directory for Program Files or Data Files if desired. 17. Click Next. 18. On the Services Accounts window, select Use the same account for each service, Auto Start SQL Server Service, and Use the Local System account. Above is the suggested configuration. However other accounts can be used for security reasons. 19. Click Next. 20. On the Authentication Mode window, select Mixed Mode (Windows Authentication and SQL Server Authentication). 21. Enter a password for the sa account in the Enter password and Confirm password boxes. 22. Click Next. 23. On the Start Copying Files window, click Next. 24. On the Choose Licensing Mode window, select Processor License for the number of processors in the server. 25. Click Continue. 26. Reboot the Windows 2000 Server.

6 3.2 SQL 2000 step 2: Create the database 1. In Control Panel, start the Administrative Tools - Services applet and verify that the MSSQLServer service is running on the server. 2. Click Start Programs Microsoft SQL Server Enterprise Manager. 3. Click the + to expand Microsoft SQL Servers, SQL Server Group, and the name of your server. 4. Right-click the Databases folder. 5. Click New Database. 6. In the Database Properties window General tab, type a name in the Name field. 7. On the Data Files tab, click the Initial Size (MB) text box that currently contains a Enter the size of the database in megabytes. 9. Verify that the Automatically grow file and Unrestricted file growth options are selected. 10. On the Transaction Log tab, click the Initial Size (MB) text box that currently contains a Change the size to 25% of the database size with a minimum of 30 MB. 12. Verify that the Automatically grow file and Unrestricted file growth options are selected. 13. Click OK. 3.3 SQL 2000 step 3: Set the Recovery Model to Simple 1. Click Start Programs Microsoft SQL Server Enterprise Manager. 2. Click the + to expand the Databases folder. 3. Right-click the database you just created. 4. Select Properties. 5. In the Properties window, click the Options tab. 6. Check the Simple recovery model box. 7. Verify that the Auto shrink box is checked. 8. Click OK. 6

7 3.4 SQL 2000 step 4: Create a login with DBO rights to the database 1. Click Start Programs Microsoft SQL Server Enterprise Manager. 2. Click the + to expand the Security folder. 3. Right-click the Logins icon. 4. Click New Login. 5. In the SQL Server Login Properties - New Login window General tab, type a username in the Name text field. 6. Select the SQL Server Authentication option. 7. In the Password text box, type the password for this account. 8. In the Database drop-down list, select the management database. 9. Click OK. 10. In the Confirm Password window, re-type the password. 11. Click OK. 12. In the Error window, click Yes. 13. Click Tools SQL Server Query Analyzer. 14. In the DB drop-down list, select the management database. 15. Alias the user into the database as DBO by entering this command in the text box: SP_ADDALIAS USERNAME, DBO where USERNAME is the name you entered in step 3 of this procedure. 16. Click Query Execute. 17. Click File Exit. 18. Click No. 4 SQL maintenance You must regularly perform maintenance on a Microsoft SQL Server database. Over time, the indexes become very inefficient. If your database has 10,000+ nodes and queries seem to be running more slowly than normal, updating statistics on the LD_OBJECTATTRIBUTE table can substantially improve query performance. On very large databases, you might want to update statistics daily. 5 SQL Database Maintenance wizard Microsoft SQL maintenance requires the SQLServerAgent service to be running on the SQL server. You may need to set the service to Automatic in the Control Panel Services applet. SQL maintenance won't run unless the SQLServerAgent service is started. 5.1 To set up a maintenance task 1. Click Start Programs Microsoft SQL Server Enterprise Manager. 2. Click the + to expand the following folders: Microsoft SQL Servers SQL Server Group

8 the name of your server Management. 3. Right-click Database Maintenance Plans. 4. Click New Maintenance Plan. 5. In the Database Maintenance Plan Wizard window, click Next. 6. In the Select Databases window, select These databases and check the box for your database. 7. Click Next. 8. In the Update Data Optimization Information window, click Reorganize data and index pages. 9. Set the Change free space per page percentage to option to Click the Change button next to the Schedule window. 11. In the Edit Recurring Job Schedule window, select the schedule you want for maintenance. We suggest you perform the maintenance at least weekly at a time when there will be minimal database activity. 12. Click OK. 13. Click Next. 14. In the Database Integrity Check window, select these options: Check database integrity Include indexes. 15. Click Next. 16. In the Specify the Database Backup Plan window, specify your own backup schedule. 17. Click Next. 18. In the Specify the Transaction Log Backup Plan window, specify your own backup schedule. 19. Click Next. 20. In the Reports to Generate window, select the Write report to a text file in directory option. 21. Click Next. 22. In the Maintenance Plan History window, select the Write history to the msdb.dbo.sysdbmaintplain_history table on this server option. 23. Set the Limit rows in the table to option to Click Next. 25. In the Completing the Database Maintenance Plan window, enter a Plan name. 26. Click Finish. 8
