Markets, M. Basso, K. Dulaney, K. Hiller Research Note 30 July 2004 Magic Quadrant for Wireless 1H04, Niche/Visionaries Niche and visionary vendors can offer specialized features and services often unavailable from other wireless providers. Investigate whether they will work with you to provide the requisite products and services. Core Topic Mobile and Wireless Communications: Mobile Applications Key Issue What challenges must enterprises surmount to successfully exploit mobile business opportunities? In "Magic Quadrant for Wireless 1H04, Leaders/Challengers," we describe the situation for wireless e- mail adoption, and a description of the vendors in the Leaders and Challengers quadrants. Criteria for inclusion in the Wireless Magic Quadrant and for the evaluation of vendor position are described in "Magic Quadrant Criteria for Wireless , 1H04." Here, we complete the description of vendors in the Wireless Magic Quadrant for 1H04 (see Figure 1), focusing on the Niche Players and Visionaries quadrants. 2 Figure 1 Magic Quadrant for Wireless , 1H04 Challengers Leaders Research In Motion Ability to Execute Microsoft Intellisync IBM Extended Systems JP Mobile Smartner Good Technology Infowave Notify Technology Source: Gartner Research (July 2004) Niche Players Visionaries Completeness of Vision As of July 2004 Niche and visionary vendors are just as viable as leaders and challengers. We do not view being in one of these quadrants as a negative. Vendors in these quadrants play an important role by providing equal or better product features and, at times, are willing to work more closely with their customers to meet their needs. Visionaries Good Technology has improved its rating during the past nine months. Good has an aggressive approach to the market and numerous reference clients that are pleased with its solutions. Since its appearance in this market, Good has put significant efforts into moving away from the original integrated hardware/software approach to provide the client-server software platform as well as its G100 Mobitex-based devices 30 July
to an open approach supporting more client platforms and devices. The Goodlink client is available for the PalmOS and Microsoft Pocket PC platforms. A number of Goodlink bundled devices are available, such as the PalmOne Treo 600 and T- Mobile Pocket PC 2003 Phone Edition (also called MDA), in the U.S. market. Those devices will soon be shipped in Europe, in addition to a set of other European-specific Pocket PC devices such as XDAII, Qtek 2020 and SPV M1000 (also bundled with Goodlink client). In addition, although no delivery date is clear, from the strategic alliance with Dell, a dedicated Pocket PCbased wireless device with Goodlink will soon arrive on the market, which will give Good a competitive advantage over other vendors. Good is strongly endorsed by Microsoft because it supports only Microsoft Exchange. Domino, GroupWise and pure IMAP and POP3 servers are not supported by Good, and there are no plans for future support. Good has expanded network support by adding general packet radio service (GPRS), code division multiple access (CDMA) and single carrier radio transmission technology (1XRTT), and plans to add Wi-Fi (Wireless Fidelity) for a true network-neutral position. Good's approach is similar to that of Research In Motion in that Good supports a network operations center (NOC) to simplify addressability. Good's internationalization strategy includes expanding throughout Europe, and the company has built a number of partnerships with European carriers. Service has launched in the United Kingdom and will expand to other European countries by YE04, once sequential testing of the Good solution over local mobile networks is complete. The company is also pursuing product extensions to include additional functions such as multilanguage client support and over-the-air provisioning. Good promotes true full wireless synchronization of personal information managers (PIMs), while a cradle is needed to synchronize desktop software with RIM. Niche Players IBM has improved its position slightly by increasing the number of its wireless clients, although verifiable installations still remain limited. IBM bases its wireless offering on WebSphere, but much of IBM's WebSphere benefit is in providing access to e-business applications, with a secondary focus on stand-alone wireless . IBM is a good candidate for consideration whenever a combined e-business application and is the requirement, or where the relationship with IBM is strong enough to counter the lack of referenceable installations. 30 July
Extended Systems, during the past 12 months, has experienced a significant event the formalization of its partnership with HP, which promotes Extended Systems' solution as its flagship offering for its personal digital assistants. In this context, most activities have focused on its OneBridge platform in application areas other than wireless . This is due, in part, to the lack of a credible HP wireless device (a new offering is expected during 3Q04), but also to the company's market vision, which goes beyond wireless . Other wireless deployments were achieved with the Handspring Treo 600 through other channels. Extended Systems has expanded its offering to GroupWise, which should help it grow in government markets; however, this extension is countered by other competitor product extensions to that system. Extended Systems seems to have had more success in Europe where it has a loyal base. Because of its broader focus on mobile applications, Extended Systems has not made significant market progress in wireless as have its closest competitors Good, Intellisync and RIM and the company's rating has not changed much from its placement in our last evaluation (see "Magic Quadrant for Wireless /PIM, 2H03"). JP Mobile's strongest asset is the SureWave technology for synchronized push /pim, which offers multidevice support (Palm, Pocket PC, Symbian and RIM Mobitex devices), network independence (Global System for Mobile Communications, GPRS, CDMA, time division multiple access, Wi-Fi) and support for popular messaging servers (Exchange, Lotus Domino, GroupWise, IMAP). As a result of its recent acquisition of PDA Defense, JP Mobile can now support wireless device security, in addition to enhanced wireless security based on FIPS encryption. JP Mobile's strategy is to go international in Europe and Asia by leveraging its partners and resellers. Smartner is the only European vendor that met our evaluation criteria. Its product offering Duality supports a number of PalmOS devices, and Microsoft Pocket PC and Symbian smartphones. On the server side, Smartner integrates with Microsoft Exchange, Lotus, IMAP and POP3. Smartner operates over various types of wireless networks and support a number of synchronization methods. Based in Finland, its international strategy includes expansion in Europe, then in the Asia/Pacific and Middle East regions, as well as in Africa. Smartner leverages relationships with mobile operators in Europe, including Vodafone, O2, Orange, Telefonica and other local operators. A minor part of its sales are directly with businesses, but most come from mobile operators. Smartner needs to further develop its marketing to enterprises and strengthen its international operations to be able to compete in this market as a global player. 30 July
Infowave was one of the early pioneers in wireless and offers a credible product. It reduced its visibility in this segment, however, after HP decided to endorse Extended Systems for wireless . HP still partners with Infowave on applications, however. Infowave is moving toward more packaged applications (via its Telispark acquisition) and is downplaying its wireless- -only offering. The vendor appears to be primarily supporting its established customers and adding only a few new wireless e- mail customers. We have received few customer contacts regarding this product. Notify Technology is a small company with limited revenue. Notify's business only partly focuses on wireless , via the NotifyLink behind-the-firewall server solution. Although plans are to support other systems, the Notify product strategy remains to provide a device and carrier-neutral enterprise solution mainly for Novell GroupWise. Feedback from the few customer references available indicate that there is room for improvement in international support and client stability. The Notify product does not represent a strong alternative for wireless , except for Novell GroupWise users. More recently, vendors such as JP Mobile and Extended Systems have begun to support GroupWise, putting further pressure on Notify. Notify will need to significantly increase its capabilities to play a role in this market or consider alternatives, including mergers and acquisitions. Other Important Vendors Not Listed in the Magic Quadrant CommonTime integrates with only Lotus , although it can support Palm, Pocket PC and Symbian devices using the native client. The vendor prefers not to be evaluated for the Magic Quadrant at this time. Further development of its offering is expected near the end of ianyware Solutions, a subsidiary of Sybase, resells Intellisync's product in its wireless solution, Pylon Anywhere. Because its offering is based on a third-party product, the vendor is not listed separately. Messaging Architects' product, GWAnywhere, only supports GroupWise server and therefore does not qualify for inclusion in our Magic Quadrant. Extended Systems adopts this product to provide GroupWise support in its OneBridge product. Nokia's mobile solution has not yet been widely accepted by the market. Nokia is re-evaluating its direction for wireless e- mail, based on its wireless products (Nokia One Business Server, formerly Nokia Access Mobilizer), as well as on partnerships with RIM, IBM and Oracle. We do not recommend 30 July
Nokia One Business Server until the company's enterprise mobile strategy is clarified. Oracle provides limited wireless capability, mostly implemented with its product, Mobile , in the Oracle Collaboration Suite. References for this system deployed across other systems have not been available and therefore, Oracle did not qualify for this evaluation. Seven has a business solution available as a behind-the-firewall or managed service solution. The company was not included in our evaluation because it goes to market solely through mobile operators that do not permit customers to connect to multiple networks. Visto has an international presence as a result of partnerships with mobile operators in different regions. The company relies on these partners for sales and customer support. Although the company's product offering includes a portion dedicated to businesses (Mobile Enterprise Server), Visto did not provide references where its behind-the-firewall solution was implemented on multiple networks from competitive mobile operators. Other vendors There are many other vendors that sell as part of a more-integrated offering; however, wireless as defined in our evaluation, is not their primary focus or a focus of their selling effort (such as Air2Web). Acronym Key 1XRTT CDMA GPRS PIM NOC single carrier radio transmission technology code division multiple access general packet radio service personal information manager network operations center Bottom Line: When selecting a vendor to provide a wireless e- mail solution, don't focus only on leader and challenger players. Instead, consider also niche and visionary players. Depending on your specific needs, there may be more-appropriate and costeffective solutions than those offered by the leaders and challengers. Assessing the risks associated with implementation of any of these vendors' products is critical, however, because of their small size or a lessening of focus (due to other priorities). 30 July
