Where to Connect in your Shop Best cases Where to Connect the astech in your shop While there is not one perfect area in a shop to locate the astech, the astech should be accessible in areas where it is part of the shop flow or process. We have learned from our customers that the following areas are most optimal. Located near or at a pre- op/disassembly point Final Q/A / Detail delivery area Centrally located in the shop for easy access to all Outside the Building for vehicles that cannot move 7
When to Use the astech Best cases when to use the astech (Standard Operating Procedures SOP s) Pre- op Stage/disassembly phase OR When vehicle repairs completed Anytime one of these conditions is present an astech service is required to protect you and your customer. When the OEM has available documentation requiring scan/ Flash/ Calibration/ Relearn is required to complete repairs I.E. Honda, Toyota etc. Mechanical / Electrical repairs need to be, or have been, performed Structural damage is present and/or welding has been performed on the vehicle Interior / Exterior Trim has been R&I d. Including seats, door trim, headliners, dashboards, for example Restraint system repairs are needed or R&I d from the vehicle hybrid and electric vehicles* Service lights present on the dashboard Let s review some reasons why you need to scan next 8
Why Scan a Vehicle During Estimate (Inspection Scan) Highly Optioned Vehicles An inspection scan will disclose what features and functions are supported by the vehicle s network. Braking, Suspension, and Safety Equipment Damage On 2012 and newer vehicles, and some older vehicles, you will be dealing with ABS systems, skid control systems, and collision avoidance systems that have multiple sensors located in various areas of the vehicle that are vulnerable to collision damage. A system may not function due to a damaged sensor in an unexpected area of the vehicle. The only way to get an accurate estimate is by scanning with a factory scan tool. This prevents replacing parts that do not need to be replaced or having to supplement the part when the vehicle is nearly ready to be returned to its owner due to being missed during the estimate (cycle time). Deployment Devices (Air Bags, seat belts, headrests, etc.) An inspection scan will disclose the number of deployment devices the vehicle is equipped with and which have been deployed. Some SRS modules, when they are replaced, need have build data enter end into them. This is gathered in the inspection scan. Without this info, the vehicle will have to go to the dealership. Also, some SRS modules can be unlocked and re- used, according to OEM repair instructions. 9
Why Scan a Vehicle During Estimate (Inspection Scan) Service Lights on Dash Service Lights on Dash A service light on the dash will not tell you why the light is on or what systems it is monitoring. Did you know that engine misfire can cause the skid control warning light to come on? The only way to know for sure, so that repair estimates and parts can be accurately dealt with, is to pre- scan the vehicle before disassembly with a factory scan tool. Collision Avoidance System Present A service light on the dash will not tell you why the light is on or what systems it is monitoring. Did you know that engine misfire can cause the skid control warning light to come on? The only way to know for sure, so that repair estimates and parts can be accurately dealt with, is to pre- scan the vehicle before disassembly with a factory scan tool. An inspection scan will disclose the collision avoidance systems present on the vehicle and their status. This includes what parts are working, need calibrated or need replaced. Did you know that changing a windshield can create problems with these systems? Did you know that simply painting a bumper cover can cause collision avoidance systems to malfunction? Suspected Fraud On most vehicles, scanning with a factory scan tool during the estimating process can provide you with information about when vehicle s systems failed. As vehicle control networks become more complex, failure of convenience systems due to low battery voltage or other non- loss originated causes will become more common. These issues should be a discussion with the customer on day one, instead of having a disagreement of liability with the customer when the vehicle is ready for delivery. 10
Why Scan a Vehicle During Estimate (Inspection Scan) Low Battery Voltage How many batteries have you purchased, unreimbursed, due to a battery failure after repairs have been finished? Scanning with a factory scan tool as part of the estimate process can give you information about the vehicle s battery condition prior to the loss. This will allow you to upsell a battery replacement to the customer before it becomes a disagreement in liability at the end of the repair. 11
Why Scan a Repaired Vehicle (Completion Scan) Zero Point Calibration on the passenger seat Passenger air bags are queued to deploy based upon the weight residing on the passenger seat. The passenger seat has a function like your bathroom scale that determines the weight of the occupant of the seat and then determines whether or not to deploy and, in some cases, intensity and direction. If the seat scale is out of calibration, the result can be injury or death. Additionally, aftermarket seat covers will cause the seat to be out of calibration. This function should always be performed with a factory scan tool. Bear in mind that failure to do this calibration will not always trigger a dash warning light. Any Replacement, R&I or repair of Air Bag or Restraint System Components Anytime an air bag or restraint system component is depowered, moved or replaced, it must be reintegrated and calibrated into the vehicle s control module network with a factory scan tool. Failure to do this will not always trigger a warning light on the dash. Steering Angle Sensor Calibration Anytime an alignment is performed or there has been steering or suspension repairs made, the steering angle sensor must be calibrated. Traction and skid control functions depend on the control module network knowing the exact position of the steering wheel. This cannot be fixed by repositioning the steering wheel on its shaft. There are specific OEM procedures that must be followed, including a steering angle senor calibration with a factory scan tool. Failure to perform this calibration may not trigger a warning light on the dash. 12
Why Scan a Repaired Vehicle (Completion Scan ctd.) R&I Inside panels and Head Liners Anytime power is disconnected from the controls for power windows, power locks, power mirrors, power lift gates, power seats, lighting (puddle lamps for example), they must be re- integrated into the control module network after repowering. This requires a factory scan tool. Failure to do this will generally not trigger Welding on Vehicle As you know, there are minimum distances for welding near air bag system components. Did you also know that when welding on a vehicle, the electrical currents involved can damage control modules in other vehicle locations or cause them to fall out of calibration? This is why a factory scan tool should be used to do a Health Check on the vehicle to verify that all vehicle systems are functioning correctly and in calibration. After market scan tools cannot see all modules in the network. Failure to do this scan may not trigger a warning light on the dash, even though some vehicle systems will not function correctly. Hybrid and Electric Cars There are additional on- board electrical systems on hybrid and electrical vehicles. Many of these systems will not trigger a warning light when there are problems. There is no way to tell if the vehicle s electrical systems are working properly with out a Health Check using a factory scan tool. For example, if the hybrid battery is being over charged due to a miss calibration of the charging system, the hybrid batter can explode or catch fire. 13
Why Scan a Repaired Vehicle (Completion Scan ctd.) Lack of Service Lights on Dash Not having a warning light on the dash tells you nothing about the health of vehicle systems such as safety and convenience systems. Misleading Service Lights on the Dash Warning lights on the dash can be misleading. For example, a traction control warning light can be the result of engine misfire. There is only one way to know for sure what the root cause is. That is through the use of a factory scan tool. Highly Optioned Vehicles Many of the convenience systems in a vehicle quit working when de- powered. They must be reinitialized to the vehicle s network with a factory scan tool to start functioning correctly again. This would include such systems as automatic power windows, memory power seats, etc. Additionally, collision avoidance systems will all need to be recalibrated. This is true even when simply painting a bumper cover. Collision avoidance and park assist functions are affected by the thickness of paint on the sensors. 14
Frequently Asked Questions Q- What is the astech Service Report? The Service Report shows the detailed results of the scan and any procedures that we have conducted on the vehicle. Q- What will the report show? Customer Name, Date and Time of Scan, Specific Vehicle Info Service Information Groups with Description Fields All stored system fault codes acquired by the astech Fault code numbers with description and component identifiers CDS Technician comments / suggested repairs or procedures CDS Technician operations performed Vehicle Module count Scan charge Q- How and when will I receive the report? The astech Service Report will be ed to you after the CDS Technician completes the research required to document the scan report. Q- How long until I receive my Detailed Service Report? Generally you will have your report in about 30 minutes after scan is complete. This may vary especially if a car has multiple codes to research or we conduct a flash relearn procedure to the vehicle. You CDS technician will give you an timeframe at the time of the scan. 15
Frequently Asked Questions (ctd.) Q- How long does it take to scan the car? This varies by manufacturer and the amount of data the car has stored. Can be as little as a few minutes or longer. Q- Do I need to stay with the astech during the whole scan process. No we designed the tool to run remotely by the CDS Technician so your team can remain productive doing other tasks. There are going to be times we need assistance during the process. The chat client and audible alert on the astech help us accomplish this. Some repairs require more direct attention than others, this is based on the severity of impact and other vehicle complexities. These are above and beyond your control and ours. Rest assured we are here to help. Your CDS Technician will keep your apprised during the process so that proper steps and procedures can be followed. Q- Do you offer Technical Support? We are not a Technical Hotline, however our dedicated staff of ASE Certified Technicians are happy to help. If you have a question, please call and ask. 16
