Overview The Digipad II Econo Series Touchpad is designed as an intermediate console system to meet the needs of individuals who require touchpad access to only the most commonly used vehicle functions. Because of its universal design, it also has the flexibility to operate in nearly any make or model vehicle. There are fifteen commonly used vehicle functions that can be accessed with the Econo Series: ignition, start, intermittent, low and high wipers, wiper wash, park lights, headlights, low, med. and high front fan speeds, cruise on, cruise set, park brake and one additional auxiliary function. The multifunction design of the access buttons allows the Econo Series user to cycle through related functions from a single contact point. For example, the vehicle's Parklights and Headlights are both accessed from the LIGHTS button. To turn ON the Headlights, you will need to depress and release the LIGHTS button twice. The first time you depress and release the LIGHTS button, the Parklights will turn ON. The second time the Headlights will turn ON. A third time will turn all lights OFF. This is how our multifunction buttons allows a single button to operate many related functions, just as the OEM switch would do. As with the Digipad II Gold Series, EMC has improved the circuit architecture, power load capacity and wire harnessing of the Econo Series to prevent damage to our system due to underrated current circuits by the OEM and voltage spikes from damaged motors and actuators. This is just one more way that EMC proves, experience does matter! Once you have familiarized yourself with the Econo Series and discovered its flexibility and ease of operation, you will see why we have included the Econo Series console system in the Digipad II family of the most advanced vehicle control systems on the planet! 1
System Layout Econo Series Owner s Manual This diagram shows the entire Digipad II Econo Series system and how each component connects. This should give you good insight as to what was involved in installation. All solid lines represent cable harnesses and the dashed lines show mechanical linkages to the vehicle. This diagram is for your information only and does not suggest that you should try to perform any maintenance on this unit. If any problems do occur, contact your local EMC Certified Dealer immediately. 2
Keypad Operation The Digipad II Econo Series touchpad uses multifunctional tactile buttons to access all of the available functions. The touchpad is arranged in two rows of universal icons depicting the available functions. Each function is accessed by the colored tactile button next to each icon.the previous series of Digipad II Consoles, the Silver Edition, used microswitches located under the touchpad overlay to activate each function. The Econo Series Does NOT use the same type of switches. This will reduce the effect of wear on the overlay. The rest of this section covers each functions operation and how they are activated by the touchpad. Ignition The Ignition key is used to apply ignition power to all HOT, HOT IN RUN, HOT IN START and ACCY circuits when the ignition button is depressed. With the vehicle OFF, depress the Ignition key to apply power to the vehicle's ignition circuits. The LED indicator will illuminate to signal that the Ignition is ON. When the vehicle's engine is running, depress and hold the ignition key for one second to turn the engine and all electrical circuits OFF. Start The Econo Series is equipped with a security feature on the Start function. In order to activate the starter, a series of keys will need to be depressed before the starter will be engaged from the START key. The security code is the START, FRONT, and AUX 1 keys, in that order. Therefore to start the vehicle, first you must depress START, FRONT, and AUX1, then depress the Start key again and the starter will engage. The LED indicator only will illuminate when the starter is being activated. Do not attempt to start the vehicle once the engine is running or damage may result to the vehicle starting system. 3
Lights Wipers The lights button operates the Parklights and the Headlights. Depress and release the Lights button once to activate the vehicle Parklights and all of the panel indication lights. Depress and release the Lights button a second time to turn on the vehicle's Headlights. Depress and release the Lights button a third time to turn all of the vehicle lights OFF. The touchpad backlighting is tied into the OEM panel illumination circuit. Therefore, when you change the intensity of the OEM instrumentation panel via the OEM switch, the Econo Series touchpad backlighting will also change in intensity. With the single Wipe/Wash button you can operate Intermittent, LO, and HI wiper speeds as well as the Wiper Wash function. To cycle through the Wipers functions and OFF, depress and release the Wipe/Wash button. Each time the Wipe/Wash button is depressed and released, the function change state. For Example, to turn ON the intermittent wipers depress and release the Wipe/Wash button once. To switch to LO, depress and release the Wipe/Wash button again. A third time will switch the Wipers to HI and a fourth will turn them OFF. To access the Wipers Wash feature, depress and HOLD the Wipe/Wash button for approximately 2 seconds, the Wiper Wash will operate and the Wipers will cycle once. The cycle time of the Intermittent Wipers is preset and can not be adjusted. The Wipers Wash feature can be accessed at any time as long as the Ignitions is ON. Front Fan Speeds Wipers is one of the two functions that can be remotely operated from the Econo Series Touchpad. This function can be accessed by Digitone, a Power Headrest or a Two-Button Touchpad. See the section on Remote Operation for further details. The vehicle's front fan speeds are accessed by the FRONT FAN button. The first time the button is depressed and released, the front fans are turned on LOW, and the LED indicator will illuminate to signify that the fan is on. Depress and release the FRONT button a second time for MEDIUM, and a third time for HI fan speed. To turn the fans OFF depress and release the FRONT button a fourth time. If the ignition is turned OFF while the front fans are running, the Econo Series will store the current fan speed and reactivate it when the ignition is turn back ON. 4
Cruise Park Brake Auxiliary If your vehicle is equipped with cruise control, the Econo Series can operate Cruise ON and Cruise SET from the single CRUISE button. To turn ON the Cruise control system, depress and release the CRUISE button once. The LED indicator will illuminate to signify that the cruise button has been depressed. Each time thereafter that you depress and release the CRUISE button, you will set or reset your cruise speed. IMPORTANT NOTE: OEM minimum speed requirements for cruise controls activation my vary between vehicles. Refer to your OEM vehicle owner's manual for the minimum speed required to access the cruise feature. If you are not above the OEM minimum speed requirement and you attempt to turn the Cruise ON, the Econo Series LED will indicate that your Cruise is ON when in fact, it will not be. The Econo Series Touchpad will reset the cruise when the ignition has been turned OFF and back ON again. Cruise is one of the two functions that can be remotely operated from the Econo Series Touchpad. This function can be accessed by Digitone, a Power Headrest or a Two-Button Touchpad. See the section on Remote Operation for further details. The EMC Electric Park Brake can be accessed from the Econo Series touchpad or from the AEVIT input device-ss if installed. With the Ignition OFF, depress and release the BRAKE button once to set the Park Brake. The Park Brake is then automatically set. Do NOT hold the BRAKE button down. Once the LED above the BRAKE icon is illuminated, the Electric Park Brake will automatically move to the set position. Once the Park Brake is set, the LED will go out. To release the Park Brake, depress and release the BRAKE button again. The Park Brake will not set if the Ignition is ON. The Auxiliary Function on the Digipad II Econo Series has the capability of performing a variety of operations, each one depending on the vehicle's configuration and your needs. All auxiliary functions are momentary and reversing in operation. For example, if the drivers window was wired as the auxiliary function, each time the AUX.1 button is depressed and released, the window will reverse in direction. Since this is a momentary operation, you must hold down the AUX.1 button for as long as is needed to position the window. 5
Gas & Brake Interface Econo Series Owner s Manual If an AEVIT Gas & Brake system is installed in you vehicle, the Digipad II Econo Series acts as the interface between the input device and the Electronic Park Brake. AEVIT uses the Electric Park Brake as an emergency backup to the primary braking system. The EMC Electric Park Brake can be accessed by positioning the input device to full brake. When the input device is brought to full brake with the ignition ON, the Electric Park Brake is momentarily applied, to act as a backup braking system. It can also be used to set and release the Park Brake, similar to the BRAKE button, when the ignition is OFF and the AEVIT system is still booted-up. Remote Options The Digipad II Econo Series has the capability to remote access the Wipers and the Cruise functions. Some of the remote options that can be used are Digitone, a Power Headrest, or a Two-Button Touchpad. 6
Service Requirements Your Digipad II Econo Series is designed to provide you with years of trouble free operation and requires minimum routine service. Your EMC Certified Dealer is familiar with these requirements and should have discussed routine maintenance with you prior to delivery of your vehicle. All service should be performed by a Certified EMC Dealer. Failure to comply with the following maintenance schedule may void your warranty. - Initial inspection after the first 6,000 miles of driving with the Digipad II Econo Series unit installed. - Routine inspection every 12,000 miles of driving with the Digipad II Econo Series unit installed.
