1 Rationale We all want to be somebody, or someone else! Especially at school pupils will come across fellow pupils with a wide range of skills, abilities and personalities that may differ from their own. This assembly encourages pupils to be themselves, and to be confident in who they are. We are all aware of the barriers to this lack of confidence, poor role models, bad decisions and limited opportunities are only some of them. This material aims to be high energy so requires a great deal of enthusiasm choose wisely when you do it! The Powerpoint presentation of '' is simple to prepare but you may ask another teacher, chaplain or pupil to do it. If your group is unresponsive or you are not confident that people will volunteer or participate, drop the challenges. The questions in the 'Love Survey' are examples and you may choose to make up your ones. The interview with a believer should be planned beforehand to keep the responses brief. As part of your curriculum you may ask your pupils to prepare the questions and pass them onto your guest. This is an excellent way to keep your pupils' attention in the assembly. Interaction with pupils is central as they participate in the quizzes or challenges. To succeed it is helpful to have a good rapport with the pupils or to be helped by those who do you may draw in other pupils or staff who will encourage the pupils to participate. Each element of the assembly has a spoken section, active section and reflection built in. This assembly works well at the start of a term or year. Follow it up with a fair that offers a range of options for pupils, either in school or in the community. They could publicise school clubs and trips, or community groups looking for volunteers. With an older group this

2 could become a careers event with information about work, further study or gap years. Evaluation (a) Evaluation (b) Increased attendance at, or interest in, the publicised people, clubs or events would follow on from increased conversations about what pupils are doing. This could also be measured in a greater willingness of pupils to participate in class-based discussions or activities. Relevant staff should meet and engage a sample of staff teachers to discern how pupils have responded during the assembly and their recall and impression of the whole assembly experience.

TEXT Introduction.You must have heard this before, be all you can be. We believe it too and want to help you do it. I heard someone say that, in Scotland, most young peoples' greatest poverty is poverty of ambition. I hope that isn't you this morning. So: Be all you can be with your body "In this school we offer you opportunities to make the most of your body (don't giggle!). It may be sport, dancing, outdoor adventures like climbing or canoeing, maybe our overseas trips. (Insert any examples for your school) This year, try something new and discover that there is more to life. Who wants to take this challenge?" Through Religious and Moral Education classes, Social Education and assemblies we will discuss our views of life. Life is complicated and you deserve chances to think and decide for yourself. Inside you are feeling sad, a bit lonely or maybe excited. Yet you can't share that with your friends because it isn't cool to be depressed or to get too excited about the things you like. Fitting in becomes more important than being honest with yourself. We want to listen, to help you be all you can be with your emotions don't close them off or pretend they are not there. "Now, think for yourself what will you with your heart do this week" Be all you can be with your friends "There are lots of people in this school but sometimes it is good to make new friends or get to know folk away from school. Never mind the challenge of bungee jumping, making friends is a huge but rewarding challenge - and the best way to get a friend is to be a friend. In a survey of young people in Edinburgh it was discovered that most people wanted more friends but they wanted other people to make the first move. Is this the same here? "Now, think for yourself: what will you do this week to make new friends" Be all you can be with your soul To finish, you are more than your body, your brain, your heart or your friends. Many of you will know people who have had miscarriages or been bereaved, who celebrate births and weddings all of life. Through these events of sadness or joy many people come to believe that there is more, there is a God out there and inside you. This is life. Whatever your views take chances to explore and experience this full life. Interview a member from a faith community, either a staff member or from the local community. Ask them to give a story to explain why they believe, how they try to be all they can be with their soul.
