4 Airpocalypses Average AQI levels jump in the winter, when coal-fired power plants rev up to meet heating demands from the more than 20 million residents in Beijing. Hazardous days are becoming more commonplace, as are higher readings. In 2013, 5.3% of all hourly ratings were ranked as hazardous, up from 2.9% in Besides of breathing that, Beijing s residents breath another month of very unhealthy air, 5 additional weeks of unhealthy air and 8.4 weeks of unhealthy air for sensitive groups (looking at you, grandma and small children). The government is set to pass law changes that will give it more powers to shut polluting factories, punish officials and place protected regions off-limits to industrial development
5 Beautiful Beijing background China has launched ambitious program to improve air quality, target is to reduse emissions by 25% from 2012 level before 2017 in Beijing. Finland (Tekes) and China (Ministry of Environmental Protection) signed a MoU for cooperation on April 9th, Team Finland project The cooperation aims at conducting a Sino-Finnish joint study to gain common understanding of actions to be taken to improve the living conditions, especially the air quality in Beijing. This study will act as a platform for future cooperation focusing on implementation of identified actions.

7 Why to expand? Pollution watchdog says 28-36% of hazardous airborne particles came from surrounding provinces like Hebei and Shanxi. Beijing EPB coordinates implementation of Clean Air Action Plan in Tianjin and Hebei. In National Environment Protection meeting in Beijing, Beautiful Beijing was mentioned as model of international co-operation. Shanxi province s EPB contacted Team Finland and proposed cooperation Shanxi s pollution sources are different than in Beijing, mainly heavy industry => provides new opportunities for Finnish companies.

9 Future cleantech solutions for private customers Finland s cleantech business is mainly B to B B to C business grow much faster than B to B in China Price is not only purchasing criteria, foreign image E-commerce provides new opportunities to reach private customers Awearness of people is increasing Private people s bank savings 15,9 trillion USD (China Economic Review) Saving rate in China 35-40% Main reasons: poor basic health care system, children s education Survey by MRIC group: 47,3% of respondents in Beijing would like to relocate because of IQ concerns
