3 National Curriculum links This day has been designed with the National Curriculum KS3: The development of political power from the Middle Ages, Aspects of local history and how they relate to a broader historical context in mind. The aim of the session is to concentrate on what life was like in London in the early half of the period i.e. the 16th century. The session allows students to use original artefacts to refine and develop their understanding of life in Tudor London. It will allow students to identify, evaluate and use sources to make judgements on their use. The time in the gallery will allow pupils to show some independence in following lines of enquiry, using their knowledge and understanding to identify, evaluate and use sources of information critically. The knowledge gained at the museum can be used in work after the visit. Pupils will gain a deeper insight into the life of Tudor Londoners, and therefore of Britons as a nation. Session descriptions Tudor object handling workshop Through working with original Tudor artefacts from the museum collection, the workshop aims to bring to life the city of London during the Tudor period. The workshop is led by a museum educator and lasts for 60 minutes. The workshop begins with a directed discussion of a slide showing Tudor London. The aim is to create a visual overview of the external structure of the city including, for example, the Thames, the walls, Tower of London. The main activity of the workshop is a hands-on investigation of original objects. Pupils work in five different groups, each with a tray of original artefacts. Their task is to identify each object not necessarily an easy task and then to identify a theme which links the objects. The museum educator will help the groups by giving clues as appropriate, but the aim is for students to investigate and draw conclusions independently. After roughly 40 minutes, each group will report back on one or two of their objects and their theme. An Audience with Henry the VIII Students meet this imposing Tudor monarch in a role-play and debate session. The session will help students explore the complex issues surrounding Henry s break with the Church through drama, question and discussion. Gallery time The activity sheets cover life in Tudor London by looking at four themes. Students can be divided into small groups to work on the four separate activity sheets. The sheets will direct students to different areas of the galleries. A plan has been included that will help students locate the gallery cases they will need to look at. You will need to make your own copies of the gallery activities sheets for your students to use. It is anticipated that students will have enough time left over to look at other parts of the gallery that take their interest. You many want to use the information gathered in the museum as the basis for a wall display or presentation back in school. There should be time to pull ideas together in the gallery, once the activity sheets have been finished. Visit preparation and followup activities It is recommended that teachers prepare students for this study day by working through at least one of the preparation activities suggested in this pack or any of your own devising. We have also provided follow-up activities and student source sheets that can be used back in the classroom to consolidate the museum experience. 1

4 Example timetable for Tudor study day Below is an example to show you how the day is structured. Please check your confirmation letter for your actual timetable. There will be schools booked for the other sessions and you will not be able to overrun your allocated time. 2

5 39 Practical guidelines To maximise the enjoyment and value of the visit please consider the following: Each student should be given an Exploring the gallery sheet. This will help them form a general idea of the whole gallery split your class into five groups for working in the galleries copy the appropriate sheets for each group bring along a clipboard and pencil for each student ensure that you have at least one adult for every 15 students and that the adults accompany them at all times make sure that the students know that the objects they will be handling are original they are over 500 years old remind the group that other members of the public will be using the gallery please ask students not to lean on the glass cases please visit the shop in small groups. You can visit the shop any time whilst in the museum photography during schools session is welcomed. You are also welcome to take photographs within the Museum galleries without flash or tripod use. These images may only be reproduced for personal or educational purposes, which include reproducing the image as a classroom teaching aide or as part of a school project. Any publication of the image for any other purpose is forbidden, which includes publication on any website. As an alternative pictures of many of our key objects are available to download from the picture bank on our website, Postcards and posters can be purchased from the shop and prints may be purchased from our on demand print website Please note that accompanying teachers and adults are responsible for students behaviour at all times in the Museum; both in public areas and taught sessions. 3

6 49 Visit preparation activities Preparation To maximise the enjoyment and value of the visit please consider the following: introduce to the group some general background about Museum of London undertake at least one of the suggested pre-visit activities ask the group to think of some questions for the workshop leaders at the Museum. Pre-visit activities The museum session will add depth to students understanding of life in Tudor London. It would be helpful for students to have studied the influence of religion, the growth of towns and the nature of Tudor life in general. 1. Students could make a list of types of sources that historians use to investigate the past (e.g. written accounts, paintings, photographs, artefacts). Students are then to highlight all those on the list that they could use to find out about Tudor London. They may want to think about why some of these could be useful and not others. 2. As a starter activity or homework task, students could find definitions of the following: Trade Pilgrim Industry Merchant Import Aldermen Guild 3. Students could research medieval London and produce a list of 10 key facts about it which they could compare with Tudor London to see how much had changed. 4

7 59 Follow-up activities for the classroom 1. Students could create a wall display of a Tudor city, including some details based on their group s theme perhaps some of the objects in action. 2. Students could write a Tudor guidebook for a stranger visiting London for the first time. How is London arranged? What kind of people might they see there? 3. Students could write a summary of life in Tudor London. What would be good about living there? What you would dislike? How does it compare to where you live in London today? 4. Students could draw their own artist s impression of Tudor London. 5. Using the information gained from the sessions, students could write and perform a 10 minute soap opera concentrating on the characters to be found in a Tudor city. What would they be doing? ( e.g. domestic, leisure, work). What issues would they be concerned with? (e.g. money, work, trade, travel). 5
