Fresh Perspective Fighting Hunger Improving Lives Strengthening Communities Thank You for Making a Difference 2014 Annual Report

I really appreciate what you do to help me and my family. We are thankful for your help, and helping all people who really need food. Thank you. Drake, age 12 2 Central Pennsylvania Food Bank 2014 Annual Report

To Our Friends & Partners Thank you for your commitment to eradicating hunger in central PA. Your continued support is vital to the 55,000 people receiving food assistance from the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank each week. We are proud that individuals and families in our communities can depend on the Food Bank to be a reliable source of healthy food. We continually strive to better serve families trying to put a warm, nutritious meal on the table. We assist the senior who relies on our ElderShare Program for nutrients that keep them healthy and we provide nourishing meals and snacks through our special programs for children to help them grow, develop and succeed in the classroom. Despite the improving economy, the number of people needing food assistance remains at record levels. With the support of our generous donors, the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank provided more than 31.6 million meals to our neighbors in need in We are committed to providing more fresh fruits and vegetables to people needing food assistance, growing our fresh produce distribution by more than 20% last year. We also introduced an innovative fresh milk distribution program in 2014, and by the end of the year more than 3,000 quarts of wholesome, fresh milk was being distributed each week. We couldn t do this great work without donors like you. In the coming year, we will continue to work with our partner agencies to better serve families facing hunger and we will reach out to ensure that everyone knows where to get food if they are having a hard time making ends meet. With your generous support, all of this work is possible. Thank you for joining with us to end hunger in our community, because no one should be hungry. Joe Arthur, Central Pennsylvania Food Bank, Executive Director Tanya Comedy, Nationwide Insurance, Board President Fighting Hunger Improving Lives Strengthening Communities 3

Nutrition Education In 2014 the Food Bank continued to offer enhanced nutrition education and food safety training opportunities for our agency partners and the consumers they serve. Our ongoing partnership with Penn State Cooperative Extension provided hands-on nutrition education activities such as cooking classes and wellness lecture sessions for consumers at the agency level. Penn State Extension also distributed educational newsletters specific to seasonal produce. Additionally, workshop sessions related to menus, safe handling and food storage have been offered at our annual agency conference and in workshop settings at the Food Bank. A new health and wellness pilot program in partnership with Highmark, the Milton S. Hershey Medical Center and Penn State Extension was implemented in September This program not only provides nutrition education activities, but also health screenings including glucose, BMI and blood pressure testing, and flu shots. The program is currently held at Mary s Helpers Food Pantry in Steelton. The Food Bank is exploring opportunities to expand this pilot to additional sites in A new endeavor at the Food Bank, A Date with A Chef, offered onsite meal program partners the opportunity to spend a morning in our demonstration kitchen with a professional volunteer chef. Agency staff and consumers work side by side with the chef to prepare recipes utilizing inventory available from the Food Bank. Culinary techniques, food safety and menu planning are key components of these sessions. Participating chefs are members of the local American Culinary Federation chapter. 4 Central Pennsylvania Food Bank 2014 Annual Report

Fresh Milk Distribution Pennsylvania is home to more than 7,800 dairy farms, 30 milk bottling operations and is the nation s fifth-largest milk producer. With fresh milk being one of the most highly-desired food items, but hardest to secure, in the charitable food network, the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank joined the PA Department of Agriculture, Harrisburg Dairies, Pennsylvania Association of Milk Dealers, Mid-Atlantic Dairy Association and the Center for Dairy Excellence to launch an innovative milk distribution program in Through the public-private partnership, milk is shipped to Harrisburg Dairies and Schneider Dairies by Pennsylvania dairy farmers to be processed specifically for the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank. After extensive review by the PA Milk Marketing Board, the Food Bank became a licensed charitable sub-dealer of milk. This ensures that milk is provided at a discounted price to the Food Bank to better serve Pennsylvanians who use the Food Bank s services. Pennsylvania now has a way to serve milk to our citizens who otherwise wouldn t have access to nature s perfect beverage, said Secretary of Agriculture George Greig at the June, 2014 launch event. This is the first step to ensuring all Pennsylvanians have access to our state s high-quality milk. I thank our partners for their work to help Pennsylvanians in need. By the end of 2014 the Food Bank was distributing more than 3,000 quarts of fresh milk weekly, with a goal of 5,000 quarts a week by June Fighting Hunger Improving Lives Strengthening Communities 5

Keeping Kids Healthy One in five kids in central PA may not know where their next meal is coming from. These kids who don t have enough proper nutrition, more than 100,000 in central PA, aren t going to do as well in school, are more likely to be sick and are far more likely to not graduate from high school. Hunger keeps these kids from reaching their full potential, which means it can be a life sentence and hunger doesn t just hurt these kids, it hurts us all. The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank is taking steps to combat the growing epidemic of childhood hunger. The Food Bank s youth programs served thousands of kids each week in 2014 and the programs continue to grow. The Food Bank addresses childhood hunger through our Kids Cafe, BackPack, Youth Pantry and School Pantry programs. In the summer of 2014 the Food Bank also became a sponsor for the Summer Feeding Program in Dauphin County. Overall, more than 120 sites are currently providing much-needed nutrition to children to keep them healthy and happy and more sites are expected for summer of Another vital piece to ending childhood hunger is to expand the school breakfast program. Three out of four public school teachers say that students regularly come to school hungry. The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank is taking a leading role working with school districts throughout central PA to overcome obstacles to providing school breakfasts. With breakfast offered, teachers have seen fewer disciplinary problems, improved attention and more participation in class. We will continue to work so every child has access to the nutritious food they need to thrive. 6 Central Pennsylvania Food Bank 2014 Annual Report

Supporting Seniors Many people underestimate the day-to-day struggles of those who are 65 and older, and their difficulties to make ends meet. 13% of the individuals served by the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank, approximately one in eight, are seniors. Many are hiding their hunger, too proud to ask for assistance. The average social security benefit is approximately $1,200 a month, and the majority of seniors rely on Social Security as their largest, and sometimes only, source of income. It s not surprising that 70% of the seniors served by the Food Bank report that in the past year they ve had to choose between buying food and paying for utilities or medication, trying to stretch their budget as much as possible. Having enough health-sustaining food is important to everyone, but it is especially important for seniors who are particularly vulnerable to disease, or when their life circumstances such as limited mobility make obtaining a healthy diet more difficult. The Food Bank s ElderShare Program helps combat this issue by providing a box of nutrient-rich food to qualified seniors once a month. Each of the more than 5,500 seniors who accept a box each month receives canned meats, peanut butter, canned fruits and vegetables, cheese, rice, pasta, fruit juice and cereal. On many delivery days the Food Bank adds fresh produce also. In 2014, in addition to our traditional pantry and congregate meal services, more than 65,000 ElderShare boxes were distributed to seniors in our communities, helping older residents live with dignity and maintain their health and independence. 8 Fresh Express Program In striving to provide nutritious food to our neighbors in need, the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank operates an extensive Fresh Express Program. The Fresh Express Program directly supports low-income communities where residents experience chronic hunger and food insecurity. The residents in these areas have limited access to fresh fruits, vegetables and dairy products that are vital to maintaining a proper diet. The Food Bank collaborates with local partners to distribute millions of pounds of fresh produce and dairy products received annually from both local and national donors. Since these products often require expedited handling, the Food Bank takes the perishable products directly to people in need. Depending on the harvest season, volunteers distribute a variety of fresh items such as potatoes, onions, lettuce, apples, strawberries, melons and yogurt. This year-round program provides nutritious foods to more than 12,000 people each month at more than 50 distribution sites in 15 counties (Bradford, Centre, Columbia, Cumberland, Dauphin, Huntingdon, Juniata, Lancaster, Lebanon, Lycoming, Montour, Northumberland, Perry, Tioga and York). Last year the Fresh Express Program provided more than 2.7 million meals to approximately 5,600 households in central PA. In 2015, we expect to open sites in several more counties. The Fresh Express Program expands the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank s capacity to distribute non-perishable, frozen and fresh foods by overcoming barriers that prevent access to underserved areas. Our excellent drivers and high-capacity refrigerated trucks ensure quick, efficient delivery of healthy food to complement the diets of residents in these communities. 8 Central Pennsylvania Food Bank 2014 Annual Report

Thank You Volunteers & Donors In 2014, more than 3,000 volunteers donated 35,000 hours to the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank, the equivalent of 18 full-time employees. From individuals to church and student groups to corporations, doing hands-on work in our warehouse, assisting office staff, serving on our board or various committees, or helping at a community event, each person and every volunteered hour makes an impact on our mission to feed and nourish our community. In addition to the donation of time and talent, donations of food and funds are also vital to the Food Bank. Individuals and corporate partners alike generously help us sustain and grow the food distribution programs that serve tens of thousands of individuals in central PA each week. Last year, six corporate donors topped one million pounds in food donations to the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank (Big Lots, Inc., ES3 LLC, Malt-O-Meal Company, Pepsico, Inc., Quaker and Wal-Mart). The support of thousands of loyal donors, large and small, bless the Food Bank with their generous gifts each year and make it possible for us to continue fighting hunger, improving lives and strengthening communities.
