Thank You for Making a Difference Being Well Fighting Hunger Improving Lives Strengthening Communities 2013 Annual Report

To Our Friends and Partners 2013 was another year of tremendous growth for the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank. With the support of our community, the Food Bank reached historic milestones in the fight against hunger by distributing a record amount of food, enough for about 26.5 million meals. Every week the Food Bank provides food to thousands of individuals, families, seniors and children who would otherwise go hungry without our assistance. Each week, more than 54,000 of our neighbors rely on us, a number that continues to rise. Joe Arthur, Executive Director We are committed to providing more fresh fruits and vegetables to our neighbors in need because it isn t just about the people we serve being full; it s about them being well. Individuals who are struggling with hunger lack the means to access the foods that are best for them, like fresh produce. Last year, more than five million pounds of fresh produce was distributed by the Food Bank. We are proud to reach that benchmark, and we will maintain this transformational endeavor to help individuals struggling with hunger living healthier and better lives. Tanya Comedy, Nationwide Insurance, Board President The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank could not have accomplished this amazing community service without tremendous support from so many: our dedicated staff, our visionary board, our diligent network of partner agencies and our committed donors and volunteers. As supporters, you give generously of your time, your money, your food, your professional talents, and most of all, your compassion. We thank you for all you share with us, and with your support we will continue to provide the most nutritious food possible to our neighbors at their greatest time of need, because no one should be hungry. 2 Central Pennsylvania Food Bank 2013 Annual Report

Distribution of Most Nutritious Products (in pounds) The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank has more than doubled the amount of nutritious products distributed in our 27 county territory in the last four years, highlighted by the five million pounds of produce distributed in Fighting Hunger Improving Lives Strengthening Communities 3

Fresh Express Program The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank s Fresh Express Program is an outreach program designed to bring food directly to neighborhoods where people struggling with hunger lack access to affordable and nutritious food or reliable food-assistance programs. By bringing food directly to these neighborhoods, the Fresh Express Program helps combat the transportation barriers that sometimes make it difficult for low-income people to access the adequate nutrition they need, including the isolated rural areas that we serve. The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank has built a network of 51 Fresh Express sites in 15 counties (Bradford, Centre, Columbia, Cumberland, Dauphin, Huntingdon, Juniata, Lancaster, Lebanon, Lycoming, Montour, Northumberland, Perry, Tioga and York) to distribute fresh produce, dairy and deli products, and typical shelf-stable food items that provide the sustenance for a healthy and productive life. The hard-hit communities we serve are in dire need of these nutritious food products that are typically unavailable to them. More than 6,000 households were served in 2013 through the Fresh Express Program, giving residents of these communities access to produce such as oranges, yams, cabbage, onions, cantaloupe and many others to complement their diets. As the Fresh Express Program continues to grow, support for the program has increased also. Donations for the Fresh Express Program enable the Food Bank to augment donated food items with purchased food to provide a balanced menu of food products. 4 Central Pennsylvania Food Bank 2013 Annual Report

Fresh Produce Distribution Fresh fruits and vegetables now make up an increasingly large portion of the vital food the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank distributes to our neighbors in need. In 2013, the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank s fresh produce distribution exceeded five million pounds, nearly five times the amount we provided to hungry central Pennsylvanians in Fresh produce now comprises about 20% of the Food Bank s total food distribution, which places our offerings on par with the amount of fresh produce that typical American shoppers place in their grocery carts. The distribution of this fresh produce requires more collaboration between the Food Bank and our community partners. The pantries must be equipped to handle the fresh offerings and understand the importance of distributing these products quickly. We are proud to say our partner agencies have enthusiastically responded to the new offerings, with more than 400 partners now receiving and supplying fresh produce, and more partners adopting fresh produce distribution every week! Individuals and families served by our community partners are now enjoying everything from apples to zucchini. Also of great importance, we are also using our new demonstration kitchen to train our member agencies in nutrition education, healthy cooking and food selections, and many of our members are working to spread this education to their clients to help them embark on a path of healthier living. By promoting healthful food choices for our clients, we collaborate with our community partners to encourage healthy eating, while building solutions that are appropriate and sustainable in the low income communities we serve. 6 Childhood Hunger A few years ago a teenager named Janie, who was struggling with hunger, emotionally voiced her dilemma: When you are hungry, you can t think of anything else. Hunger damages children both physically and psychologically; such deprivation early in life puts them on a path towards an equally unhealthy future. Children living in food-insecure households are more likely to experience poor overall health, developmental delays, and behavior and emotional problems. Quite simply, if we want our kids to experience the joys of a childhood with the energy to excel in class, we must work together to ensure that they have enough to eat. With nearly 1 in 5 children in central PA at-risk for hunger, solutions must be found to establish a foundation of good nutrition and healthy eating. The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank addresses childhood hunger through our Kids Cafe, BackPack and School Pantry programs. Last year these three programs assisted thousands of children with their dietary needs. Kids Cafe programs provide free meals and snacks to low-income children through a variety of community locations where children already congregate during the afterschool hours. Other activities at Kids Cafe sites include: nutrition lessons and education, meal preparation, tutoring and mentoring, and homework assistance. To combat hunger over the weekend and when school is not in session, the Food Bank s BackPack Program serves thousands of children kid-friendly foods that require little or no preparation and are designed to provide nutrition and calories for chronically hungry children. Some examples of food provided in backpacks are granola bars, cereal, 100% juice boxes, and fruit cups. School pantries are located on school grounds and are intended to provide readily accessible nutrition to low-income students and their families. 6 Central Pennsylvania Food Bank 2013 Annual Report

Childhood Hunger I d like to thank everyone who donated food items for people like me who needs help. May God bless you and thank you so much. Kiona, age 11 Fighting Hunger Improving Lives Strengthening Communities 7

Supporting Seniors Living on a fixed income forces many seniors to make impossibly difficult decisions. Pay for medicine or meals? Heat, or eat? When medical conditions keep seniors home-bound, the problem becomes even more complicated. Our seniors deserve better. The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank s ElderShare Program is specifically designed to help seniors maintain their health and independence. ElderShare provides more than 5,000 seniors a box of nutritious food each month, ensuring that their kitchen is stocked with healthy food. Each box a participant receives contains a variety of food including: reduced-fat milk, canned meats, peanut butter, canned fruits and vegetables, cheese, rice, pasta, fruit juice and cereal. In addition, in many areas, we add fresh produce on the day of delivery. Last year, more than 60,000 boxes of food were distributed to seniors in our communities and the value of the boxes was nearly $3 million. Since the inception of the ElderShare Program in 2010, more than 215,000 boxes have been distributed, which means nearly four million meals have been provided to seniors struggling with hunger. I am so grateful for all that you do. I am living on a very limited income and the food I receive helps me tremendously. Thank you so much. Linda 8 Central Pennsylvania Food Bank 2013 Annual Report

Thank You Volunteers and Donors The generous donation of time that our volunteers bestow upon us is greatly appreciated by the Food Bank, and by our neighbors that will have food on their tables because of our volunteers selfless efforts. Last year volunteers donated nearly 35,000 hours to the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank that is almost four years of time generously given by volunteers to help their neighbors struggling with hunger. The thousands of volunteers who come through our doors each year work tirelessly because of their belief in our mission. Many volunteers value the hands-on experience of packing ElderShare food boxes for seniors, stocking shelves, repackaging bulk food, sorting fresh produce or packing mixed groceries that will be distributed to families and individuals. Others give their time as volunteer members of our board and serve on various committees. Donations of food and funds are also vital to the Food Bank and comprise 80% of our total resources. We are providing more meals than we ever imagined, and without the support of thousands of donors blessing us with their gifts, many plates would be empty. Every gift, no matter what size, makes a difference and the Food Bank is blessed to have such loyal donors who are committed to providing healthy food to their neighbors. The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others. Mahatma Gandhi 14 Central Pennsylvania Food Bank 2013 Annual Report
