1 Welcome to Managerial Accounting! As your instructor for this course, I look forward to helping each of you achieve your Managerial Accounting educational goals. Professor Mary Beth Nelson mnelson@northshore.edu

2 ACC203 OL Managerial Accounting Introduction This upper-level course introduces the student to managerial accounting. It emphasizes the use of cost issues for management to make informed decisions for business planning. Communicative, quantitative, critical thinking and ethical considerations will be emphasized. Topics include: cost classifications, job cost systems, cost behavior, cost-volume-profit analysis, budgeting with variance analysis using standard costs, segment reporting, responsibility accounting, relevant costs for decision making, and financial statement analysis. Other topics may be included. Fulfills open and business electives.

3 Required Course Materials 1. Managerial Accounting, 15 th Edition; Garrison, Noreen, Brewer; McGraw-Hill Irwin, Customized versions of this textbook are sold at the North Shore Community College (NSCC) Bookstore**. Keep the CONNECT access code included with this textbook. 2. CONNECT, a web-based, assignment & assessment program for which the access code is included in the new textbooks sold in the NSCC Bookstore. If you purchase the text from another source or misplace the code, you will need to purchase CONNECT separately from McGraw Hill. For CONNECT registration & purchase information access this site: 3. Blackboard, the NSCC Learning Management System. 4. A calculator that can add, subtract, multiply, and divide. Devices with internet connectivity are not allowed to be used for calculations. ** The bookstore edition contains the access code for CONNECTPLUS. CONNECTPLUS contains the e-textbook, as well as multiple learning tools and the assigned problems for credit. Students may purchase CONNECTPLUS alone, without the loose-leaf textbook sold in the bookstore, directly through McGraw Hill. 6 Grading Criteria Course Grading Criteria The following will be required of each student: for 9 chapters, submission of a Quiz; 9 chapters, submission of Homework; and 1 chapter, internet exercise. COURSE REQUIREMENTS: Assessments Chapters Value Internet Exercise* 1 10% each 10% Homework 2, 3, 5, 6, 8, 10-12, 15 4% each 36% Quizzes 2, 3, 5, 6, 8, 10-12, 15 6% each 54% Total 100% *The ANGEL discussion board will be used for this assessment. NOTES: There are significant penalty points for overdue submissions. No exceptions. The lowest grade is not dropped. Extra credit is not available in this class.

7 Course Structure Managerial Accounting During 15 weeks, this course will include the instruction of ten textbook chapters that encompass the course learning objectives. Depending upon the chapter coverage, the length of time expected for you to learn and demonstrate your understanding of the course material will vary by chapter. Students are expected to keep track of the course requirements and their respective due dates that are located on the Course Schedule located under the BLACKBOARD COURSE INFORMATION folder.

8 Important Notes to Remember All course requirements are due at 11:59 PM EDT on the date provided on the Requirement Schedule. In fairness to the students who submit the requirements on time, neither extensions nor extra credit is available. No credit will be provided for assignments submitted after the solution has been posted made available to the students.

9 Succeeding in this Course In addition to completing the course requirements, there are some tips that I would strongly suggest. Always: *Stay organized on using the COURSE MATERIALS and Course Schedule. Some students keep a binder separating the weeks and/or chapters. *Print and save to your desktop the Syllabus and the Requirement Schedule. *Stay on schedule: once you start to fall behind with respect to the learning activities and requirements, it is very difficult to catch-up. Point deductions for late submissions may adversely effect on your grade. *Stay current by checking NSCC and course Announcements at least once every 24 hours.

11 What to Do the First Day 1. Proceed to the Blackboard site for this Managerial Accounting course. 2. Follow the directions on the Announcement page. If you have - not already done so, then complete the online orientation. - completed the online orientation, than proceed to the Lessons tab to retrieve more directions. 3. Proceed to Lessons and click on the COURSE INFORMATION folder to access and either PRINT and/or SAVE the Course Syllabus, Course Schedule, Information for Accessing and Using CONNECT, and Weekly and Chapter instructions. 5. Follow the instructions to help you navigate the course.
