FUTURE
English doesn t have a real FUTURE tense. Future can be expressed in several ways. 1. Be going to 2. Present Continuous 4. Will 5. Present Simple It always depends on the speaker, what he/she wants to say/express.
BE GOING TO USE: 1. To talk about future plans. I m going to travel to the USA this summer. She is going to visit her parents. We are going to get married in September. He is overweight. He is going to take up jogging. I m going to be a doctor. I m going to go to university next year. I m going to go to university next year. (you can omit to go )
2. To talk about future predictions which are visible. Look at those black clouds. It is going to rain very soon. Can you see that boy climbing the wall? He is going to fall down! That woman is going to have a baby. (you can see, she is pregnant) It is going to be a nice day. The sky is clear and blue.
Present continuous for future We use present continuous for fixed arrangements in the future. I m flying to New York next Friday. (I have already bought a ticket) I m seeing my dentist at 3pm this afternoon. (I have made an appointment) I m going to a birthday party this weekend. (It is in my diary) She is taking a day off tomorrow. (She has talked about it to her boss) What are you doing this afternoon?
Present continuous is especially common with these words: tonight, tomorrow, this evening. this weekend etc. And the verbs come, go, meet, see, arrive, and leave are very often used.
USE: WILL/ WON T 1. To talk about future predictions based on your own beliefs: I m sure he will like the present. I think she will be late again. People will travel to the moon in I m sure Mark will spend all his pocket money in a few days.
2. Decision at the moment of speaking. Which pen do you want? blue one. I will take the Where are you going? To the cinema. Oh, I have nothing to do so I will go with you. Will you help me with the dinner, please? I m so tired, I think I will go to bed now. Oh, don t worry, I will do the washing up. Will you lend me you car this afternoon? I need to give Alice a lift to the airport.
Other usage of WILL Promise, order, warning, threatening, begging, guessing, decisions. see the examples: I ll have a pizza, please. You ll get hurt, be careful! I ll kill you if you touch her again! I promise, I ll pay you back tomorrow. I ll help you if you want to. Will you do it for me? I guess, they ll win again. I bet, he ll be fired (he ll lose the job).
WILL is usually used after. I think / I don t think I m sure I promise I suppose I guess I bet I hope
PRESENT SIMPLE for future 1. We use it when we talk about timetables The next train to Brno leaves at 5pm. The last lesson finishes at half past five. 2. After certain words and phrases. If you study hard, you will pass the exams. Before you leave the house, turn off the cooker.
