3 FRANKLIN MILITARY ACADEMY 701 N 37th Street Richmond, VA phone / fax Principal: Colonel Sheron Carter-Gunter Counselor: Major Ruby Jackson Introduction Franklin Military Academy is a public, specialty high school created to offer a structured environment of academics, military and public safety training. It is a special initiative that provides high school learning centers for students who are strongly motivated and wish to have a distinctive educational experience in a small school environment of focused learning. At Franklin, students are guided by a team of mentor teachers, military and public safety partners and have opportunities for an education-to-careers curriculum. The military component of the program is offered through the Junior Reserve Officer s Training Corps (JROTC). Cadets are required to wear the military uniform daily and to conform to the military protocol and grooming standards established by the Army Cadet Command Regulation The public safety component includes police and firefighter training whereby students (cadets) are prepared for careers in law, criminal justice and corporate and public safety. It focuses on career development in a sophisticated and rapidly changing workplace. Public safety cadets are expected to become a member of their respective Explorer Program. All cadets are expected to strive for academic and leadership excellence. Emphasis is placed on self-discipline and control, respect for authority, selfresponsibility and character development. Cadets develop the skills necessary to become better citizens and community leaders.

4 APPLICATION AND ADMISSIONS TIMELINE November 1, 2012 December 11, 2012 February 1, 2013 March 29, 2013 August 2013 Applications become available online Information session held at FMA for incoming high school students Applications due from counselors to FMA Notification of acceptance status mailed to applicants and given to guidance counselors Orientation (specific date TBA) SELECTION PROCESS Student applicants may be interviewed by an admissions committee if warranted. The interview team will consist of Franklin Military Academy faculty and staff members. Applications will be reviewed by committee. Rating categories will include: Unsatisfactory, Good, Very Good, Excellent. The Student Selection Committee will review categories reported for all applicants. Final ratings will be based on the following: Student s application packet; Counselor recommendation; Teacher recommendations; Attendance record; Academic ability as represented by student s transcript and test scores; Conduct as represented by the student s disciplinary record Appeals Process: If a parent/guardian chooses to appeal an admissions decision, the parent/guardian should request an appeal through a letter to Colonel Sheron Carter-Gunter, principal, within ten (10) school days of the date on the notification letter. The principal will meet with student and parent; conduct an interview and an additional review of the documents submitted. Upon completion of the review, a written response will be prepared by the principal and mailed to the parent. The decision of the principal will be final.

6 PARENT/GUARDIAN APPLICATION GUIDELINES: In order to be considered for admission, THE APPLICANT must: a. submit a complete application to the guidance counselor at your current school b. have demonstrated good character and academic ability c. be interviewed by an admission panel (if required) d. have a discipline record that does not contain major or repeated infractions e. not have an attendance record containing an excessive amount of absences/tardiness f. possess physical abilities that meet the established requirements Upon receipt of the completed application package, each application will be reviewed by the admissions panel. *Incomplete applications will not be considered. *It is the responsibility of the parent to ensure that the completed application package is submitted by the current school guidance counselor by the due date. Late applications will only be considered for the waiting list.
