2 Catherine & Pierre Breton, a wife & husband team of vignerons, have deep family roots in the Loire. Even though Catherine grew up in the Vouvray village of Vernou-sur-Brenne and her parents were vignerons, she surprisingly did not drink wine until in her twenties when she met Pierre. Like a typical late bloomer, her passion for wine went into a sonic speed. She works the vineyard and makes all La Dilettante (meaning dabbler ) wines. La Dilettante Vouvray still and sparkling wines are from her family vineyards. She radiates aesthetic of beauty that makes their wines so compelling. Pierre grew up near the abbey of Bourgueil and comes from generations of vignerons. In fact, the local name for Cabernet Franc is fittingly Breton. Catherine & Pierre Breton started their own domain in Catherine & Pierre Breton wines have purity and harmony that I associate great artisans of France. So charming and pretty with individual personality. This is a new vintage. This wine sees only about a week of maceration. A wine you can see your fingers through your glass. A wine for all seasons. Avis de Vin Fort is 100% Cabernet Franc from gravelly soil. Minerally. Crunchy (croquant). Relaxed yet refined. It is best slightly chilled. 3 ÉPAULÉ JETÉ CUVÉE GROLLEAU 2014 SPECULATIVE SKU: ml 12 bottles/case This is a brand new wine from Catherine & Pierre Breton. The red varietal Grolleau used to be common in Bourgueil before the appellation was declared in After the appellation declaration, it was easier for vignerons to market the AOC red varietal Cabernet Franc. So many beautiful parcels of old Grolleau vines were uprooted. Now, it is difficult to find old Grolleau parcel on a good site. Catherine & Pierre Breton found a tiny 50 year-old parcel on sandy soil. Grolleau. When grown with care and vinified well, Grolleau has magnetic personality with all types of foods. Clocking in at unbelievable 11.5% alcohol, this light-body dressed in ruby robe wine is full of personality charged with fruit and black pepper taste. This wine wants to have sex with all types of dishes. You may want to have a cigarette afterwards. Graceful. Harmonious. Forty-year old vines grown on limestone from one of the most striking appellations. The grapes are hand-harvested and gently pressed. Élevage is in neutral tanks. I would like to imagine the majority of Vouvrays used to taste like this up to 1950 s and built its appellation reputation before the industrial farming and modern interventions took hold. This is a new vintage. Supremely elegant Bourgueil. Macerated in a traditional open wooden vat and aged in foudres (big oak casks) for 18 months. The ancients knew this vineyard gave grand vin. This tiny walled vineyard sits on pure limestone with clay on top. The vineyard is on a gentle slope, facing south. Then, a mysterious break on the contour of the vineyard as it twists to face southeast halfway down the slope. Pierre & Catherine s Clos Sénéchal is a handkerchief size of just over one hectare. Les Perrieres is the top wine for Catherine & Pierre Breton. Beautiful. Elegant. Power without weight. Les Perrieres is the most prized parcel in Bourgueil on a south-facing hill composed on sandstone on a bed of pure limestone. From the tiny 1 hectare site, the yields are naturally low due to the terroir (20 hectolitre per hectare on average). The maceration is traditional in open wood vats. The fermentation and élevage follows in 550-L barriques. The wine is bottled unfined and unfiltered after two full years in wood. This wine captures the romantic flow of Chinon. Full of violets and mineral. Balanced. Pretty. Very delicious. This wine comes from several parcels of majestic Beaumont hillside with clay on top and limestone underneath.
