2 2013 AND 2014 BEAUJOLAIS: THE CREAM OF THE CROPS 2013 and 2014 are two excellent, complementary Beaujolais vintages. The firmer, more structured 2013s have benefited from bottle age, and are delicious now, while the juicy, succulent 2014s have been a delight since they were bottled. Despite their ample youthful charms the 2014s will age well in the mid-term too, as they have lovely balance and sufficient structure hidden behind the silky fruit. I have been extremely impressed by The Society s Beaujolais-Villages 2014, blended by my predecessor Marcel Orford-Williams, which can embarrass many a cru. I also have great admiration for Château d Emeringes Beaujolais- Villages Situated quite high up, its firm fruit softens at this time of year after a little bottle age, while retaining enough substance to stand up to food. Amongst the crus, Domaine des Côteaux de Font de Curé s Brouilly 2014 is a new purchase with a wonderful taut and refreshing palate. Fleuries vary considerably in style from Stéphane Aviron s fresh and floral Domaine de la Madrière to the broader and richer Domaine Montangeron situated in a warmer site near Morgon, and the similarly rich Clos de la Roilette which borders Moulin-à-Vent. I particularly like Domaine du Moulin d Eole, Moulin-à-Vent Les Thorins 2014, which is opulent and powerful, without dryness or aggression. One of the top growers is Jean-Marc Burgaud, whose Morgon Côte du Py is one of the wines of the 2013 vintage. It is intensely flavoured but wears its concentration lightly. For a range of styles, we recommend the three mixed cases; the 9.60 saving on the Explore Beaujolais 2014 case is to encourage as many members as possible to explore these carefully selected wines. Toby Morrhall Society Buyer for Beaujolais 2014: A DELIGHT FROM THE OFF The Society s Beaujolais-Villages 2014 Superb example of Beaujolais-Villages, intensely fruity, with lively sappy character which is so refreshing that another glass is called for. Several villages are represented in the blend including Vaux-en-Beaujolais, famous as the setting for the satirical novel Clochemerle. 12.5% ref BC-BJ bottle 83 dozen Stéphane Aviron, Beaujolais-Villages 2014 Lovely, juicy, fruity Beaujolais-Villages from Quincié, showing all the charm of the vintage. 13% ref BC-BJ bottle 90 dozen Château d Emeringes, Beaujolais- Villages Vieilles Vignes 2014 From a cool spot, relatively high up, Château d Emeringes produces fresh, well-structured gamay overlaid with the generous fruitiness of the 2014 vintage. 3 Domaine des Côteaux de Font de Curé, Brouilly 2014 Remarkable vineyard perched on a very steep slope producing taut, tense refreshing wines more like Côte de Brouilly than straight Brouilly. 13% ref BC-BJ bottle 102 dozen Domaine du Moulin d Eole, Chiroubles 2014 Bright, fresh, sappy Chiroubles from vineyards at 350m altitude. Fermented and aged in concrete cuves. 12.5% ref BC-BJ6671 Brouilly Pisse-Vieille, Durand 2014 Lovely, deeply coloured, fragrant Brouilly, quite soft in style with the taste of generous, ripe fruit. Perfect for grilled meats for example. 12.5% ref BC-BJ6561 The Society s Exhibition Moulin-à-Vent 2014 Concentrated, powerful yet richly fruity, this is a delicious example of Moulin-à-Vent. It is a blend of four different wines with some wood ageing, used more to round out the tannins than to contribute any oak aroma. 13% ref BC-BJ bottle 114 dozen Domaine Coudert, Clos de la Roilette, Fleurie 2014 Generous, ripe Fleurie from vineyards close to Moulin-à-Vent and sharing that commune s richness. Aged in large oak foudres. It tastes juicy with a seductive sweetness. 13% ref BC-BJ6641 Domaine du Moulin d Eole, Moulin-à-Vent Les Thorins 2014 A very fine Moulin-à-Vent from one of the top sites near the appellation s famous windmill. Rich, ample, generous. Powerful yet succulent. Matured in concrete vats, going against the modern trend of ageing in barrel, this has great purity of fruit. 12.5% ref BC-BJ6661 Domaine Montangeron, Fleurie 2014 The Montangeron family have their vines close to the border with Morgon and mid slope, with some sandy soils. This produces quite a broad and round style of Fleurie. 13% ref BC-BJ6651 Trenel, Fleurie 2014 Scented and floral as the name promises, with juicy fruit on the palate. 13% ref BC-BJ6741 Stéphane Aviron, Domaine de la Madrière, Fleurie La Madone Vieilles Vignes 2014 Intense, bright, floral Fleurie from a cool highaltitude vineyard. This is a specially selected wine bottled from a single 50hl foudre which we thought was outstanding. 12.5% ref BC-BJ6621 Jean-Paul Brun Terres Dorées, Beaujolais L Ancien 2014 From limestone and clay soils in the south of the region, this is a rich and ample gamay with a deep, resonant flavour. 12% ref BC-BJ6791 Domaine Jean-Marc Burgaud, Régnié Vallières 2014 Light, floral, pretty Régnié bottled early to capture the fruit. The Exhibition blend merges wines from three top estates including an element from the famed slope of aptly named Grille-Midi. This is fragrant, full-flavoured and silky. Now to % Available in mixed case BC-MX15257 only The Society s Exhibition Juliénas 2013 Juliénas (you don t pronounce the s ) is one of the northernmost crus; some say this was where the first vines were planted in Beaujolais and the name harks back to Julius Caesar. The vines are up in the hills, some on quite steep slopes of granite or schist, producing a succulent style of Beaujolais. The wines are solid choices for food, always quite robust and usually able to age three to four years. 13% ref BC-BJ6581 The Society s Exhibition Morgon 2013 Good Morgon ages well and develops pinotlike complexity. This has exceptional depth and weight of fruit. Now to % ref BC-BJ6571 Juliénas Esprit de Marius Sangouard, Trenel 2013 Sensuously fruity, richly flavoured Beaujolais from this northern cru that tends to make wines that are best with hearty cooking. 13% ref BC-BJ6171 Domaine du Moulin d Eole, Moulin-à-Vent Les Champs de Cour 2013 Made from 40-year-old vines, this is an opulent, perfumed Moulin-à-Vent with great length and freshness of flavour. Aged 14 months in five and six-year-old barrels to concentrate the flavour without adding oak aromas. 5 2013: WELL WORTH THE WAIT Château de Beauregard, Juliénas Beauvernay 2013 Full-fl avoured Beaujolais, deeply coloured and ripe tasting, thickly textured and rich. Perfect with a good steak-frites. Now to % ref BC-BJ bottle 150 dozen Domaine Joseph Burrier, Chiroubles Saint-Roch 2013 Frédéric Burrier waited until the end of October to pick his Chiroubles vines which are planted at 500m. As a result the fruit was picked fully ripe and it shows in the texture and sweetness of the fl avours. This is vibrant, fresh and refreshing and just how it should be. Now to % ref BC-BJ bottle 150 dozen Clos de la Roilette, Fleurie Cuvée Tardive 2013 This is named Cuvée Tardive not because it was harvested late but because, as it comes from some of the best and oldest vines of the property, it is a keeper and should be consumed relatively late (tardive) after some bottle age. One dozen only per member. ref BC-BJ bottle 150 dozen Domaine Jean-Marc Burgaud, Morgon Côte du Py 2013 An outstanding example of Morgon from the fabled Côte du Py and from a top vintage. Côte du Py s soil is not granite but schist and produces wines which combine controlled power and minerality in an original way. The overall effect is intensity and elegance. It wears its natural concentration lightly.
