Tata Kids of Steel 2016 Information pack and entry form Dear teacher, Tata Kids of Steel was possibly the best event we have ever been involved in. To see the smiles on the children s faces was so rewarding. Thank you very much for everything a truly wonderful event, a headteacher from Mold. This is just one of the many positive comments we have received about our Tata Kids of Steel triathlon series. Teachers and parents alike have praised the series for being smooth, well organised, and inspiring more than 75,000 youngsters over the last nine years. This document will provide you with everything you need to know to get involved in the tenth anniversary Tata Kids of Steel series including dates and venues, a list of what to bring to the event, a booking form, and some essential information about photographers and the media. We have also included a letter for parents to make it easy for you to inform them about the event and to collate photography and media consent forms. Tata Kids of Steel is a series that we are very proud of. For some children it has been their first chance to ride a bike or go in a swimming pool and for others, it has reinforced their love of sport and even encouraged them to join a local sports club. Whatever their reasons for coming along, our goal is to ensure every child goes home with a big smile on their face and a wonderful experience to tell others about. We hope that after reading this document, you will join up and register your school for this exciting, rewarding and free event. You can do this by simply completing the online entry at If you require any further information before making your booking, please check the FAQ section online or contact Claire Kremer at the Triathlon Trust, who will be happy to answer your questions ( Clairekremer@britishtriathlontrust.org telephone: ) Kind regards, The Tata Steel and British Triathlon team

Photography and media consent form (page 8) About Tata Kids of Steel Because of doing this event I have now joined the Ketton Panthers Junior Triathlon Club and go training twice a week, a participant in Corby. The Tata - Kids of Steel children s triathlon series is a free, fun and inclusive way for children to experience how much fun sport can be. The series is organised by the British Triathlon Trust, on behalf of British Triathlon and Tata Steel. The aim of Tata Kids of Steel is to give youngsters the opportunity to try all three aspects of triathlon in a fun and safe environment. We also hope the series will inspire the youngsters to lead a more active lifestyle. Distances may vary slightly across the series, but they are designed to suit all abilities and are based on the following: Swim: 50 metres Bike: 1,000 metres Run: 500 metres
The events take place at venues across Great Britain and are open to schoolchildren aged 8 to 13. This series is not just aimed at sporty kids as the events are noncompetitive and designed to be achievable by children of all abilities. Since the series was launched in 2007, more than 75,000 youngsters have taken part in these free events. 1. Who can take part? We provide a fun and safe environment for all children to have a positive experience of a mini triathlon wherever possible. If any of the children in your care have a disability and require specialist help, please contact us and we will do everything we can to accommodate these needs and to give your children a full experience of the event. If you wish to discuss a child s specialist requirements or are unsure whether a child should take part in the events for any reason, please contact Claire Kremer who will be happy to answer your questions ( Clairekremer@britishtriathlontrust.org telephone: ). 4 1. What to expect on the day We do everything we can to make sure your school s experience of Tata Kids of Steel is enjoyable from start to finish. The organisation of the event has been tried and tested over the last eight years to ensure everything runs safely and smoothly, so you can focus on having a great time. The estimated time you are likely to spend at the event from start to finish is around two hours. You will be asked to arrive promptly at your confirmed registration time. This will give you a chance to register at our registration desk, receive a briefing from our event team on what to expect during the triathlon, and for your children to change into their swimwear. We will provide your children with a bag in which to put their clothes and belongings. We would ask children to only bring clothing and equipment they need for the triathlon event and not to bring valuable items with them. Once your children have changed into their swimming clothes, they will be guided onto the poolside where they will leave their bag of belongings and a full briefing will be given. Children will be asked to enter the pool in small groups, and non-swimmers will be guided to a shallow part of the pool or offered a swimming aid, depending on their requirements. After leaving the pool your children will change into their dry clothes and be guided to the first transition area. At this point a member of the event team will collect their bags of belongings and deliver them to an area where they can be collected after the event. A member of the event team will find suitable bikes and helmets for your children, and will ensure the helmets are safely fastened before allowing them to set off on the bike course. A small number of tandems and scooters are available for children who are not confident riding a bike. On completion of the bike course, your children will leave their bikes and helmets in the transition area and be guided to the running course. After crossing the finishing line, your children will receive their Tata Kids of Steel medal and a drink of water before collecting their bag of belongings.
1. What do you need to bring? The children just need to bring their swimming clothes, trainers, some shorts or trousers for running and cycling, and a big smile. We provide the bikes and cycle helmets, and each child will be given a gym sack containing a swim hat and t-shirt to wear for the event and to take home. As all children are winners when they cross the finishing line, they will all receive a Tata Kids of Steel medal to remember their day. Where children have special needs and require their own specialist equipment to take part, we would ask you to bring this along to the event with you. We would also be grateful if you could make us aware of any special needs or specialist equipment on the booking form so we can be fully prepared to give your children the support they need on the day. 2. Information about photography and the media The Tata - Kids of Steel events often receive interest from local and national media. Tata Steel and the British Triathlon Federation also capture photographs and sometimes video footage of the events to use in social media and future communications to promote the series. Therefore we ask every parent / guardian to indicate whether they are happy for their child to participate in photography and media activity by completing and signing a photography and media consent form prior to the event. This can be found on page 9. Where parents state they do not wish their child to take part in photography and media activities, the child will be given a coloured wristband to wear so that photographers and the media are aware of their wishes. We want you to enjoy your time at our event and to be able to capture some lasting memories to take away with you. All we ask is for teachers, parents and spectators wishing to take photographs at the event to register their details with us on arrival at the registration desk. We actively encourage teachers, parents and spectators to share their experiences of our events on our social media feeds. This is a great way to connect with other schools across Europe taking part in Tata Kids of Steel initiatives. You will find us at: Facebook Tata Kids of Steel Twitter
Information for Parents Dear Parent / Guardian, We are delighted to confirm that we have entered our school into the 2016 Tata- Kids of Steel triathlon event to be held at <<ENTER VENUE AND DATE>>. Please read the following information to ensure your child arrives at school on the day with the appropriate kit and that the necessary forms relating to participation are completed and returned to school in plenty of time. This free event is being delivered by the British Triathlon Trust on behalf of British Triathlon and Tata Steel. It is an inclusive activity suitable for children of all abilities, even the non-swimmers or those that are not confident riding a bike. The event aims to give youngsters the opportunity to try all three aspects of triathlon and encourage them to lead an active and healthy lifestyle. The organisers will provide the bikes and cycle helmets for the event and every child receives a gym sack containing a t-shirt and swim cap to wear on the day and to take home. This is a great opportunity for your child to try this sport in a fun and safe environment. The school will arrange for transport to and from the venue. On arrival the Tata Kids of Steel team will explain what will happen on the day including health and safety for the event. Children will also have the opportunity to ask questions. Swim The children will swim 10m to 70m depending on ability. This can be completed in shallow water or with a swim aid if required. After the swim, the children will put on their t-shirt and trainers and pick up a bike in the transition area. Bike The Tata Kids of Steel team will fasten cycle helmets and provide a bike. Marshalls will guide the children around the cycle course. Scooters and tandems are available for children not confident enough to ride a bike. Run After handing in their bike, the children will run around the playing field and through the finish line to pick up their very own Tata - kids of Steel medal. What to bring Swimsuit and towel Trainers Shorts or trousers for running and cycling Tata - Kids of Steel is an exciting event that gives youngsters the opportunity to try a new sport in a safe environment. Photography and video footage is often taken by the organisers for use in social media and future communications to promote the events. Tata Kids of Steel is also sometimes of interest to local and national media. Therefore, every parent / guardian is asked to complete a photography and media consent form, which is attached to this document. Any children that have not been given parental or guardian consent to participate in photography and media activities will be a given a coloured wristband to wear to ensure your wishes are observed.
A strict photography policy is operated at the event which means all teachers, parents and spectators that wish to take photographs are asked to register their details with the organisers. Thank you for your co-operation. We look forward to taking the children to this exciting and rewarding event. Regards,
