2 Trauma & Orthopaedic Services The Orthopaedic Department provides a comprehensive range of orthopaedic services from Russells Hall Hospital based in Dudley and Corbett Outpatient Centre in Stourbridge. This is provided by a dedicated team of twelve consultants each having an area of specialism and expertise. Our waiting times, from referral to first appointment, are now among the best in the West Midlands with the department offering the following services: Foot & ankle surgery This includes a full range of forefoot, mid and hind foot surgery including diabetic foot surgery and arthroscopic surgery. Hand surgery A comprehensive hand service is offered. The carpal tunnel service includes an in-house Mediracer nerve conduction service with developments underway to allow direct access by GP and extended scope physiotherapists in the community. Hip and knee joint replacement surgery This is carried out in modern laminar flow theatres adjacent to the elective ward. The Dudley Group is one of the few NHS Trusts offering computer navigation where appropriate, to assist the surgeon performing hip and knee joint replacements. Whilst this is not essential in all patients, it can help in certain cases. In November 2011 Which? magazine reported the Trust as one of the best performers in meeting eight best-practice standards for hip and knee surgery: 2

3 Paediatric orthopaedic surgery Hip dysplasia clinics and treatment of deformities in children with cerebral palsy. A number of clinics are supported by an Extended Scope Practitioner working in close liaison with the consultants. Shoulder & upper limb surgery Advanced shoulder and upper limb surgery including shoulder and elbow joint replacement, arthroscopic rotator cuff repair, instability surgery and arthroscopic elbow surgery. There is a pathway accessible to extended scope practitioners to direct list for frozen shoulder manipulation. Spinal surgery There are dedicated back pain clinics with surgery for degenerative back conditions including microdiscetomy and decompressions. There is a well established fast track caudal epidural service for extended scope practitioners. Sports injuries Facilities for detailed assessment and advanced hip, knee, shoulder and ankle reconstructive surgery including surgery for instability and osteochondral injuries. The enhanced recovery programme commenced over a year ago, focusing on improving patient outcomes, speeding up recovery and decreasing length of stay after surgery. We provide Consultant Nurse led classes that educate patients about to undergo hip & knee replacement surgery. 3

6 All elective patients are admitted to a Ring Fenced elective orthopaedic ward. The elective service is supported by a 24/7 acute trauma service which deals with the full range of fracture work accommodating any acute and urgent orthopaedic conditions. The Dudley Group is part of the Birmingham & Black Country Trauma Network and is a designated Trauma Unit. There are daily consultant led and delivered trauma operating lists in a dedicated trauma theatre and Monday to Friday fracture clinics in support of emergency department patients. We currently achieve significantly better results than the national neck of femur targets. In August 2012, our average time for patients to have their operation was 23 hours compared to the national target of 36 hours and our average time for Orthogeriatric assessment was 29 hours compared to the national target of 72 hours. We are one of the top 5 hospitals nationally for neck of femur surgery aftercare. Referring Patients Our waiting times, from referral to first appointment, are now among the best in the West Midlands.
