1 Grade Level: First Grade Project-Based Learning Unit Cindy Fulbright Essential Question: What are the different needs of butterflies, ladybugs, and honeybees? Subquestions: What are interesting characteristics of each insect? What are the life cycles for each insect? How do these insects help humans? What are the differences between the life cycle of a ladybug and a butterfly? Objectives: Competency 1 The learner will build an understanding of the needs of living organisms Determine the needs of animals: * Air. * Water. * Food. * Shelter. Real World Connections: 1. Observe the life cycle of a caterpillar, and a ladybug. The following sites are locations to use if you would like to purchase butterflies and ladybugs for use in your classroom Invite someone from the community to speak on bee keeping. 3. Observe ladybugs, honeybees, caterpillars,and butterflies in nature. ( Use United Streaming to view the life cycle of a butterfly.) 4. Take a field trip to Graham to visit a beekeeper and observe honeybees and how they make honey. Activities: Use the computer lab to research information on each insect. Make a chart or table of each insect. List needs (food,climate), description of each, value of each to humans, interesting facts.

2 Final Product/Presentation Description: Students will be responsible for answering questions asked by visitors and parents on Parent Night. Parents will be given a card with a different question to ask students during Parent Night. Work samples and student writing will be displayed for visitors and parents to view. Evaluation of Product (Rubric): I used rubistar.4teachers.org to make my rubric. The information below is listed in a grid form rather than list form as it is shown here. 4 Activity Title: Observation Journal and Video Journal Objectives Addressed: Students will observe caterpillars in the butterfly net in the classroom. Students will incorporate observation skills as well as writing skills into this activity. Butterfly habitat with caterpillars to observe Student Journals Video camera Approximate Time Needed: Students will do this for 15 minutes at some time during each school day. Activity Description: Students will work in cooperative groups to observe caterpillars in the butterfly net in the classroom. Students will date and record any observations they see each day in the class journal. In addition to the written record, students will orally state their observations to be video taped and compiled into a running account of the life cycle of the butterfly.

Students will incorporate observation,oral communication and writing skills into this activity. Ladybug habitat with ladybug larva to observe Student Journals Video camera Approximate Time Needed: Students will do this for 15 minutes at some time during each school day. Activity Description: Students will work in cooperative groups to observe ladybugs in the ladybug habitat in the classroom. Students will date and record any observations they see each day in the class journal. In addition to the written record, students will orally state their observations to be video taped and compiled into a running account of the life cycle of the ladybug.

6 Activity Title: Life Cycle of a Butterfly or a Ladybug Objectives Addressed: Students will demonstrate their understanding of the life cyle of each insect. Poster board Markers Yarn Pencils Crayons Construction Paper Books Approximate Time Needed: This will be one of the centers the students will use during the day Activity Description: Students will use the information from the class journal, their personal observations and books in the classroom to make a poster depicting the life cycle of either the butterfly or the ladybug.

7 Activity Title: KWL Charts for each insect Objectives Addressed: Students will complete a KWL chart at the introduction of each insect. One insect will be research and discussed each week. Books in the classroom, library books, internet and United Streaming video Approximate Time Needed: One insect will be researched each week. Activity Description: The teacher will direct the students in a discussion to begin the study on a particular insect by finding out what they know about a ladybug, bee, or a butterfly. They will proceed by finding what information the students want to learn about either a ladybug, bee, or a butterfly. At the end of the week, the teacher will lead a discussion with the class to find out what they have learned about either the ladybug, bee, or butterfly.

8 Activity Title: Bug Hunt Objectives Addressed: Observation of insects in nature Magnifying lens Insect net Plastic insect container Approximate Time Needed: minutes Activity Description: The teacher will take her students on a walk around the school to look for bees, ladybugs, caterpillars or butterflies. Students will use the magnifying lens to get a closer look at the insect.

9 Activity Title: View United Streaming video Objectives Addressed: Watch video of the life cycle of a butterfly Active board Computer Assess to United Streaming Approximate Time Needed: This video clip is approximately 5 minutes long Activity Description: Teacher will show this video to the class to show them real footage of each stage of the life cycle of a butterfly.
