4 Jumbo Cornish Cross The Cornish Cross chicken (Cornish X), (Cornish Cross), (Broiler), (Cornish/rock), (Jumbo Cornish cross) is a cross between the Commercial Cornish chicken and a White Rock chicken. They are a rapid grower. This breed is bred specifically to butcher or harvest and is not recommended as a pet but only for meat production. Generally, if the Cornish Broiler chicken is NOT butchered/dressed it will have health issues with the heart, bones, muscles, tendon and sores from sitting all the time. This breed is your best option for efficient feed/time to butcher weight and is the best choice for raising chickens for meat. It is recommended to harvest this chicken broiler between 4-10 weeks of age depending on desired weight. It takes roughly 14 lbs of feed to get 1 chick to 8 weeks of age. 5 Bantam Silkie A miniature sized chicken known for their nearly black skin, turquoise ear lobes, hair like feathering and fifth toe. They are credited to origination from Japan and China. They are kid friendly, good mothers and one of the most popular breeds at poultry shows. They are extremely broody and are often used to raise chicks of another breed that is not broody. They make excellent pets and backyard chickens as they take confinement well. BREEDING NOTE: About 5% of silkies have breeding defects that can be one or more of the following. No muff under the beak, lacking the 5th toe, curled toes, straight comb and cross beak. These issues seem to persist even with decades of culling and new blood lines introduced. 7 Barred Plymouth Rock Recognized by the American Standard of Perfection as a distinct pure chicken breed in 1874 and known by the kind of chickens that "Grandma" use to raise. The Barred Standard Plymouth Rock chicken is a great back yard poultry for production and very kid friendly chicken. Most people call these Barred Rocks which is a short name for the Barred Plymouth Rock chicken. The Barred Rock as a single comb (straight comb) and has more of a straight pattern in the barred feathers. 8 Black Australorps The Black Australorp chicken originated in Australia and was bred for egg production but is as good for meat and known for their shiny rich black feathering. This chicken breed makes an excellent winter laying hen. Just make sure you have a wind break and dry bedding in your chicken coop or chicken house. Always make sure you have shady areas for the Black Australorp chicken so they do not overheat in the summer. 9 Black Jersey Giant The Black Jersey Giant Chicken was originated in Burlington County in the State of New Jersey during the 1880's. A good heavy breed however, slower to grow than some breeds before surpassing them in weight and size. They are slow to mature and have a poor feed/weight conversion, which explains why they aren t popular as a commercial broiler. It is the largest of the dual purpose chicken and eventually excels as a meat chicken and a fairly good laying hen. When grown the black feathers take on a green sheen within the black color. 10 Black Sex Link The Sex Link Hybrid is the result of crossing two heritage purebred poultry standard chicken breeds together. The Black Sex Link is a result of crossing Rhode Island Red rooster and the Barred Rock hen to give you this outstanding brown egg laying hen offspring. The grown roosters have faded barred with light colored neck hackle feathers, grown pullets or hens are black with red mixed in their neck hackle feathers. This hybrid chicken breed makes for very vigorous chicks, rugged brown egg laying hens and good cockerel chicken fryers. Although not a show chicken they are great for raising hens for eggs and pet chickens for the backyard or farm. Many customers like the Black Sex Link chicken for raising free range chicken eggs or organic free range chickens. NOTE: these baby chicks look a little smaller but are not, their short chick fuss is deceiving as baby chicks. 11 Black Sumatra The Sumatra chicken has a long flowing tail, graceful carriage and was originally bred as a fighting chicken. The Sumatra chicken does not do well in close confinement and prefer to roost as high as they can get. This is a fowl of graceful form and has a long flowing tail with lustrous greenish black plumage (for the black color variety). The Sumatra chicken is noted for multiple spurs (3 spurs) that appear on each leg of males. 12 Brown Leghorn Admitted to the American Standard of Perfection in 1874 and originations from Italy, Denmark, and England. The Leghorn breed of chicken is very athletic, mature early, are hardy, non-sitters and lay very nice large/extra-large white eggs. They have a good feedto-egg conversion ratio, needing around 125 grams per day of feed. This chicken breed is great for free range chicken farming or organic free range chicken eggs. Leghorns rarely exhibit broodiness and are thus well suited for uninterrupted egg laying. The Leghorn is a light breed that matures quickly and is not considered a viable meat producer. Leghorns are active and efficient foragers and are one of the best for free range chickens that can avoid predators. They typically avoid human contact and tend to be nervous and flighty. 13 Buff Laced Polish The Buff Laced Polish chicken breed is a beautiful and unusual bird whose feathers are a rich buff color and each feather is laced with creamy white color. 14 Buff Orpington Buff Orpington Chickens originated in England, and was recognized by America as a pure chicken breed in These "Golden Chicken Beauties" are a large, stately chicken of a quiet disposition. Buff Orpington chickens are one of the best chickens for eggs and for chicken meat. They are white skinned, plump, and juicy for a great dressed out eating meat chicken. Most chicken breed charts will list the Buff Orpington chicken as a dual purpose bird. Most chicken egg charts will list the Buff Orpington chicken with a medium brown egg. Now as a plus the Buff Orpington makes for an excellent egg setters and mothers for baby chicks. 15 Cherry Egger Cherry Egger Chickens are a combination of different chicken breeds to produce an egg laying production chicken which will lay large brown eggs and one of the best chickens for backyards. They are well known for best chickens for eggs and kids. The Cherry Egger chicken resembles the Rhode Island Red chicken and is a best pick for raising backyard chickens. The Cochin Chicken (Chinese Shanghai Fowl) has a long history and arrived in England and America in Noted for massive size in appearance, profusion of soft like down in the under fluff of feathering, leg feathering, toe feathering, gentle nature and kid friendly temperament. 18 Cinnamon Queen The Cinnamon Queens are a breed that produce fast body development, fast egg production and rich brown egg shell color. These strains will start to lay eggs at a younger age than most standard heritage breeds and produce big large/extra large brown eggs. They are also color sexable as chicks for the first generation which are the chicks you receive, cockerel chicks are white, and the pullet chicks are more brownish red in color. Leg color is mostly yellow but a few may have some greenish color in the leg color. Feathering color varies with brownish feathers and white feathers on the adult hens and s from totally white to white with light to dark red feathers in shoulder feathers in the adult rooster. 19 Columbian Wyandotte This chicken was named after it was exhibited at the 1893 (Columbian Exposition or World's Fair) held in Chicago. Columbian Wyandotte chickens are a docile bird, clean legs, white with black feathers around the neck, tail and wings and they have a rose comb. They will on occasion go broody and they make excellent mothers. They work well in confinement or free range. 20 Cuckoo Maran It is a dual purpose bird and is known for its deep chocolate brown eggs which some eggs may have some speckled dark pigments in the egg shell. The brown egg color can vary in darker and lighter as the hen s go through their laying cycles. Vitamin K and calcium can have some limited help with keeping the dark brown egg shell color. They are a fast growing bird and a very rare breed here in the United States. The Cuckoo Marans have a black and white feather color pattern similar to the Barred Plymouth Rock. 21 Delaware The Delaware is a dual purpose chicken with a single comb and a layer of brown eggs. Plumage is nearly white with black feathers around the neck and tail and the bird is a rapid grower. Origin comes from hatchery man crossing Rock-Reds and occasionally a white colored chick would be in a tray considered to be a off color a sport. These white chicks grew very fast and big and after of years of breeding the white offspring they eventually became consistent with their color and color patterns and become a standard breed. In the 1980 and 1990 very few of these pure Delaware flocks still existed and just only in the last 15 years has this breed made a comeback. 22 Dominique Originated date is unknown and many of today's recognized breeds were developed by using Dominique bloodlines. Sometimes referred to as a Dominecker chicken that grandma and grandpa had on their chicken farm. The Dominique chicken is often confused with the Barred Rock chicken which has a straight comb and slightly straighter and darker barred markings. Dominique s are a great bird with a notable rose comb, barred feathering similar to the Barred Plymouth Rock. Dominique chickens are generally calm, a gentle breed that makes for a good choice for raising free range chickens because of their barred feather pattern that is thought to offer some protection from aerial predators. 23 Easter Egger The Easter Egg chickens are different because they have a full beard under the beak rather than a tuft and have a tail rather than rumpless and do NOT have pure color types. The color of their egg shells vary from pale blue to dark blue to various shades of green and a few light brownish/pink eggs. The meat is delicious and it has a taste similar to quail. The Easter Egg chickens are great chickens for backyards, chicken coops, larger chicken houses and for raising free range chickens. 24 German Spitzhauben This chicken is very rare to the United States and not yet admitted to the American Standard of Perfection. Noted characteristics are cavernous nostrils, horn type comb and mid size forward-pointing head crest which gives them their name. Spitzhauben chickens are a good free range chicken and do not do well confined. They are active, alert and like to roost in trees. 25 Golden Comet The Golden Comet chickens are one of two modern day production brown egg laying strains from hybrid breeding that produce fast body development, fast egg production and rich brown egg shell color. These strains will start to lay eggs at a younger age than most standard breeds and produce large/extra large brown eggs. They are also color sexable as chicks for the first generation. 26 Golden Duckwing Phoenix The Golden Duckwing Standard Phoenix was developed from the Onagadori Japanese breed, noted for the golden shoulder hackles, long saddle hackle and long tail feathers. They are noted for the tail feathers to stay (blood filed) to continue the growth and genes that prolong molting periods. The Phoenix was bred to have exceptionally long tails, but not to the extravagant length of the Onagadori. The male Phoenix, depending on bloodline, can have tails that reach 4-5 feet. 28 Lakenvelders The Lakenvelder chicken breed dates back to the 1830's in Germany. This breed was first exhibited in England in 1902 and was admitted to the American Standard of Perfection in These are one of the most beautiful in appearance of any of our rare varieties with their striking black and white markings and slate colored legs. Very quick and active, foraging widely if allowed to run. The hens lay white eggs and are non-setters. The name is referred to as "a shadow under a sheet." 29 Light Brahma Originated in Asia and brought to this country in mid-1800's. Light Brahma chickens are exceptionally quiet, gentle, and easy to handle. Their small pea comb, great size, and heavy plumage make them almost immune to cold weather. They have feathered legs. The hens are good layers of brown eggs, excellent brood mothers and very children friendly for pets. The Light Brahma chickens are a mostly white coloring but has black tail feathers and neck feathers have black in them. 30 Mottled Houdans The Mottled Houdan chicken breed was imported from the town Houdan (France) into England around the 1850's. The Mottled Houdan chicken was introduced to America in 1865 and later in 1874 and it was admitted into the American Standard of Perfection. This unique chicken breed has a fifth toe, a wide cavernous nostril, a large crested feather head and a white egg layer. They are extremely docile and gentle and make good pets. Not particularly a good free range chicken if you have predators because of their top knot that blocks some of their vision. They are known as the French Hen and make a great backyard chicken for pets and show. 31 New Hampshire Red The New Hampshire chicken breed was developed in 1915 from a strain of Rhode Island Reds brought into New Hampshire state. This lighter colored red chicken was later recognized as a distinct chicken breed in 1935 and sometimes called a New Hampshire Red. This chicken breed will lay very large brown eggs and is one of the great chicken heritage breeds in the USA. If you wish for a chicken that is calm, matures early, lays well and is of heavy weight, then the New Hampshire chicken is what you're looking for. 32 Partridge Cochins These are handsome, massive fowl of the Asiatic class and gorgeously colored. Males' hackle and saddle feathers are almost orange-red with black centers. Females have the typical partridge pattern with dark reddish brown feathers penciled in black. Brought from China in the days of the clipper ships, they were highly prized in New England for their show qualities and as valuable setting hens. Cochins are known the world over for being big friendly balls of fluff and feathers. They don't lay very well but are popular because of their sweet personality and fantastic mothering qualities. Cochins became famous in the 1800s when this Chinese breed was given as a gift to Queen Victoria of England, who absolutely adored them. 33 Partridge Plymouth Rock The hens are large and lay brown eggs. The Partridge is just one of the varieties of the Plymouth Rock family and noted for a good dual purpose chicken. Partridge Plymouth Rocks or "Partridge Rocks", as they're called, are a rare and beautiful dual-purpose bird. Their heritage is unclear with reports of different crosses, but what is clear is that they're very friendly, great layers of large brown eggs and able to withstand cold weather quite nicely. Though they tolerate confinement, they're most happy when they get to range freely. The Partridge coloring is beautiful and unique! 35 Production Red The Production Red chicken is very similar to a Rhode Island Red chicken only lighter in color. The plumage color can vary from a red-dark red to a light red. They are a vigorous, hearty chicken that lays lots of large/x-large brown eggs. The Production Red chicken breed is a cross of Cackle Hatcheries best Rhode Island Red chicken production line over Cackle Hatcheries best New Hampshire chicken production line. This cross produces a very vigorous, healthy egg producing hen. This is not an exhibition show chicken but a great production laying hen and/or pet chicken for your backyard chickens. 39 Salmon Faverolle Originating in France in the 1850's, the Salmon Faverolle is a good dual purpose chicken being both a good layer and a large size bird. The Salmon Faverolle chicken has a calm and docile personality which makes them a favorite chicken for backyards. Their characteristics include beard, muff, 5 toes and feathered shanks. NOTE: Webbed front toes or curled front toes can occur in 1 of 300 chicks and is a breed issue. (it comes from the breeding for the fused back toes). 50 White Leghorn White Leghorns are good layers of white eggs, laying an average of 280 per year and sometimes reaching This breed is very athletic, hardy, non-sitters and lay very nice large/x-large white eggs They have a good feed-to-egg conversion ratio, needing around 125 grams per day of feed. This chicken breed is great for free range chicken farming or organic free range chicken eggs. Leghorns rarely exhibit broodiness and are thus well suited for uninterrupted egg laying. The Leghorn is a light breed that matures quickly and is not considered a viable meat producer. Leghorns are active and efficient foragers and are one of the best for free range chickens that can avoid predators. However, the white variety of the leghorn might be easily seen by predators. 54 Yokohamas Yokohamas are an Asian breed developed in Japan and noted for their extremely long tails. The birds have an upright carriage and pheasant-like body and the roosters are noted for their extremely long saddle feathers and tail feathers. Most noted is it's unusual plumage unique from all other domestic fowl. The primary emphasis for exhibitors of this chicken breed are the long tail feathers and under the right conditions the tail can grow up to 2-3 feet every year. 57 Ancona The Ancona duck was developed in Great Britain during the early twentieth century. They mature out on the average to about six to six and a half pounds and are a stocky built duck. There is no set design to their broken color pattern. The Ancona ducks are an excellent layer, a hardy all-purpose duck that grows relatively quickly. Typically they have moderately calm temperaments and make good yard ducks as they tend to stay closer to the home. They typically do not fly and make good backyard ducks. 62 Khaki Campbell Duck The Khaki Campbell duck breed is one of most prolific egg layers of the duck breeds and if you like to use duck eggs in cooking then this is the breed for you. 64 Welch Harlequin A descendant of the Khaki Campbell Duck and are excellent egg producers. Welsh Harlequin ducks are good back yard duck and are being shown at many poultry shows throughout the USA. They are good foragers and capable of laying eggs at the top ends of eggs per year. At day of hatch these ducks can be sexed (gender determination) by slight differences in the color of their bill with about 85% accuracy for someone experienced. Normally males will have an overall darker bill while the females will have a lighter bill ending with a dark spot and within several day this bill distinction disappears. The most accurate gender determination is still inverting the vent and looking for the distinction. 74 Guineas We offer four varieties: White, Lavender, Pearl, and Royal Purple Guineas. The Guinea makes a very good watch dog and will let you know if something different is going on. They are known to be good tick and bug eaters. Guinea Fowl are very hard to sex by sight. Guinea Fowl males utter a one-syllable call, usually repeated several times in succession: chit, chit, chit; females utter a two-syllable call, usually repeated several times in succession buck-wheat, buck-wheat, buck-wheat, buck-wheat.
