The first conviction penalty for a 21 year old driving while under the influence of alcohol or drugs is a $250 to $400 fine, loss of license for THREE (3) months, a possible imprisonment for up to THIRTY (30) days and TWELVE (12) to FOURTY-EIGHT (48) hours in an IDRC. 11. 2 14. If you refuse to take a breath test, you are subject to an MVC insurance surcharge of $1000 a year for THREE (3) years. Failure to pay this surcharge will result in an indefinite driver license SUSPENSION until the fee is paid. 15. A HABITUAL OFFENDER is a person that has had their license suspended three times within THREE (3) YEARS. 18. New Jersey allows up to THREE (3) points to be subtracted from your driving record if you have no moving violations for ONE (1) YEAR. 19. A POLICE/TRAFFIC OFFICER can override a traffic light. 20. When traffic signals are hung vertically, the RED light is on the TOP, the YELLOW is in the MIDDLE and the GREEN is third in line. 21. An AMBER or yellow light means STOP before entering the INTERSECTION unless the vehicle is CLOSE to the INTERSECTION that it cannot be STOPPED SAFELY. 22. A GREEN arrow means PROCEED as shown by the ARROW. 23. A flashing RED light means STOP, go only WHEN SAFE. 24. A triangular shaped sign is a YIELD. An eight sided sign is a STOP. 25. A diamond shaped sign is a WARNING sign. 26. A pentagon shaped sign is a SCHOOL sign. 27. A railroad crossing sign is a YELLOW and BLACK circle.
3 28. Yellow lines down the center of the road SEPERATE traffic flow going in OPPOSITE directions. 29. A single, solid WHITE line across a road at an intersection means STOP within FIVE (5) feet of the line for a STOP sign or TRAFFIC LIGHT. 30. When the pavement is marked with two centerlines, one solid and one broken, PASSING is permitted on the side with the BROKEN line. 31. Double SOLID lines in the center of a two-way road means traffic should not CROSS from either side. 32. If a passenger in the front seat of a car, who is 17 years of age, is caught not wearing a seatbelt, the DRIVER is held responsible. Over the age of 18, the PASSENGER is held responsible. 33. Passengers that are TWELVE (12) YEARS old and younger should always ride in the REAR seat of any passenger vehicle. 34. New Jersey requires the DRIVER and all FRONT SEAT passengers to wear seat belts. 35. Additionally, passengers under EIGHT (8) years of age who weigh more than 80 POUNDS and all passengers who are at least eight (8) years of age but less than 18 years of age must wear SEAT BELTS whenever they sit in a motor vehicle. 36. Passengers under EIGHT (8) years of age who weigh less than 80 lbs. must be secured in a child passenger restraint system or booster seat in the rear seat of the vehicle. 37. If there is no rear seat, the child passenger restraint system or booster seat may be used in the front seat. However, never place a rear-facing INFANT seat in the front seat of a vehicle that has a front passenger-side air bag, unless the vehicle s passenger-side air bag can be DISABLED. 38. Using both a safety belt and a shoulder strap is important because they KEEP PASSENGERS FROM BEING THROWN, PREVENT PASSENGERS FROM HITTING THE DASHBOARD OR WINDSHEILD and KEEP PASSENGERS FROM SLIDING DURING STOPS AND TURNS. 39. Pushing the BRAKE PEDAL down too hard is a common mistake a new driver makes.
4 40. Name the following signals: a LEFT b STOP c RIGHT 41. When driving in reverse, steer in the direction you want the REAR of the car to go. 42. Turning the WHEEL to the right steers the REAR of the car to the right. 43. Turning the wheel to the LEFT steers the car to the left. 44. To back your car in a straight line, you should turn your HEAD and BODY to the RIGHT until you can see clearly through the REAR/BACK window. You should also make sure that your LEFT hand is at the 12 O CLOCK position on the steering wheel while you are backing the car up. 45. When parking downhill, turn your wheels TOWARD the CURB and when parking uphill, turn your wheels AWAY from the CURB. 46. New Jersey law requires you keep to the right except when PASSING, DRIVING ON A ONE WAY STREET and UNLESS IMPRACTICAL TO TRAVEL ON THAT SIDE OF THE ROAD. 48. Crossing center lines on a two-way roadway for passing is legal when the BROKEN/DASHED LINE is on your side. 49. In most cases, you pass on the left. You may pass on the RIGHT when the driver ahead is making a LEFT turn and there is room to PASS. 50. You should always YIELD to emergency vehicles, pedestrians and other vehicles already in the INTERSECTION. 51. When approaching an uncontrolled intersection, you should REDUCE SPEED and be ready to STOP. As a general rule, the driver on the LEFT should YIELD to the driver on the RIGHT. 52. When it is legal to turn right on red, you must make a FULL STOP and check TRAFFIC.
5 53. To make a right turn, you should get in the RIGHT lane. 54. When making a left turn, you should get into the lane NEAREST to the CENTER of the ROADWAY. 55. When making a left turn from a two-way road onto a four lane highway, the proper way to turn is to APPROACH THE TURN AS CLOSE TO THE CENTER LINE, MAKE TURN BEFORE CENTER OF INTERSECTION and TURN INTO THE LEFT LANE OF THE ROAD. 56. If you are approaching a school bus when it shows a flashing red light, you must STOP at least TWENTY-FIVE (25) FEET from the bus. 57. When a school bus has stopped at a school to pick up or let off children, you may pass at a speed of no more than TEN (10) mph. 58. You must YIELD to emergency vehicles when you hear a SIREN or see flashing RED or BLUE lights. Drive over to the RIGHT and STOP. 59. If your car breaks down on the road, the first thing you should do is PULL OFF the road. 70. When driving around a CURVE, your vehicle will tend to keep going STRAIGHT. The best way to take a curve is SLOW DOWN before entering the curve. 71. When a driver behind you is passing you, it is a good idea to SLOW DOWN to make it easier to be passed. 72. To maintain a proper SPACE CUSHION, you should stay at least TWO (2) seconds behind the vehicle in front of you. 73. The two-second rule refers to FOLLOWING DISTANCE. 74. Road surfaces are the most slippery during THE FIRST FEW MINUTES OF RAINFALL. 75. If you drive through water puddles, test your brakes by PUMPING them. This will also help DRY them out. 76. As car speed increases on a wet road, the tires start to ride on a thin film of WATER. This is called HYDROPLANING. When this happens, you should SLOW DOWN. 77. At night, you should be able to stop within the range of your HEADLIGHTS. 78. Safe driving skills affected by alcohol are ALERTNESS, JUDGEMENT and REACTION TIME. 79. The best way to reduce your chances of having an alcohol-related accident is not to DRIVE after DRINKING. 80. After two to four drinks, alcohol impairs your REACTION TIME, JUDGEMENT, COORDINATION and BALANCE. 81.
