Disabled Access Guide for Teviot Row House (EUSA). This building has been in part adapted for use by persons in wheelchairs and persons who have difficulty with mobility or are infirm. Seating is available. Accessible and standard toilets are also available. Introduction. Teviot Row House is the oldest purpose built Student Union in the world. It opened its doors in 1889 and it remains one of the most vibrant and well used Student Union venues in the country. Location. Teviot Row House is located within what is referred to as the Central Campus of the University of Edinburgh which is well served by public transport. The building is within approximately one mile of the city centre and is within approximately three quarters of a mile of the main student residences at Pollock Halls. The nearest railway line is at Waverley Station in the city centre. The nearest bus stops are located on Lothian Street approximately 130 metres from Teviot Row House. Lothian bus service numbers 2, 41, 42, 47 & 67 stop on Lothian Street and numerous other services stop on South Bridge (see map on the following page). Details of timetables are available from Lothian Buses, from their offices within the city and online from: Persons arriving by vehicle can access: a university car park which is located off Teviot Place; a university car park which is located at the end of Charles Street Lane; a public disabled bay which is located along Crichton Street: or, City of Edinburgh Council parking bays which are located around George Square (see map on the following page). Persons with mobility difficulties and wheelchair users are able to access the building at the secondary entrance (see map on the following page). Wheelchair access is not currently recommended without Page 4.

Parking. Within the Central Campus there are numerous parking spaces. Anyone wishing to park within a university bay must display a valid parking permit. This includes staff, students, visitors and contractors. There is a university car park located off Teviot Place within the Medical School Quad (see location map). Please note that the recommended access route from this car park to Teviot Row House is currently inaccessible due to refurbishment works being undertaken to the McEwan Hall. Access is possible by exiting the car park onto Teviot Place and proceeding to the right around the McEwan Hall. However, this route is not recommended for wheelchair users without Medical School quad car park image. The car park is suitably surfaced for wheelchair users and contains two disabled bays which are located approximately 130 metres from Teviot Row House. Disabled parking bays image. The footpaths which link the Medical School Quad and Teviot Row House are of a good standard; however, there is a moderate gradient to the front of Teviot Row House on Bristo Square. Page 7.
There is a university overflow car park located at the end of Charles Street Lane (see location map). The car park surface is rough in places and access from this car park to Teviot Row House is via a steep ramp which is unsuitable for wheelchair users without Medical School overflow car park image. If you do not hold a valid permit or key fob and require use of a university bay, it is recommended that contact is made with Transport & Parking prior to your journey (see contact information page). There is a public disabled parking bay located on Crichton Street approximately 150 metres from Teviot Row House (see location map). This bay is suitably surfaced for wheelchair users, however, access from the bay to the adjacent footpath is via a road and access from the bay to Teviot Row House is in part via a moderately graded footpath. This bay is therefore not recommended for wheelchair users without Crichton Street disabled parking bay image. Page 8.
City of Edinburgh Council pay and display street parking is located around George Square approximately 150 metres from Teviot Row House (see location map). The street surface comprises granite setts, there are limited drop kerbs to the adjacent footpaths and access from George Square to Teviot Row House is in part via a moderately graded footpath. George Square pay and display parking image. For persons arriving by taxi there is a taxi stance located on Teviot Place approximately 130 metres from Teviot Row House. The footpaths which link the taxi stance and Teviot Row House are of a negotiable gradient; however, there are no drop kerbs from the taxi stance to the adjacent footpath. Page 9.
Outside Access. Teviot Row House has two entrances. Access point map. There is no level access to the main entrance. Access to the main entrance is via six steps which do not incorporate handrails, contrasting nosings or a tactile surface at the top. The main entrance door is fastened open during standard opening hours (see opening hours). Main entrance image. There is a disabled call point located on a railing before and to the left of the main entrance which can be used to gain The call point is within comfortable reach of wheelchair users. Page 10.
Disabled call point image. Wheelchair access is possible at the secondary entrance, but is not currently recommended without assistance as the secondary entrance door is located directly opposite a flight of steps. Access to the secondary entrance is via a gate which is located beyond the aforementioned disabled call point, before and to the left of the main entrance. The gate is fastened open during standard opening hours (see opening hours). Access route to the secondary entrance image. Upon proceeding through the gate, the secondary entrance is located to the right and is accessed via either an external platform lift or a flight of steps. Page 11.
The external platform lift is operated using one of three control panels which are located: at the base of the lift; within the lift; and at the top of the lift. The platform lift gates are secure and are released using any of the aforementioned control panels. The gates are operated manually, open outwards and incorporate a small ramp at the base. There is a disabled call point located at the base of the platform lift which can be used to gain Platform lift image. Control panel and disabled call point image. The steps located before the secondary entrance have handrails on both sides but do not incorporate contrasting nosings or a tactile surface at the top or bottom. There is a landing at the top of the steps which is of a shallow gradient. Steps before the secondary entrance image. Page 12.
