1 Pioneer Clothing Guidelines & Tips - What Do I Wear? On these page you will find clothing lists: Women s Pioneer Clothing, Men s Pioneer Clothing, Shoe guidelines for men and women, General Clothing and what not to bring on Trek. Please read through all lists below. If you have any question please call me Cheryl Tarbet PIONEER CLOTHING The clothing worn by the pioneers was a combination of the fashions of the era and fabrics that had to withstand the constant challenges of the elements; rainstorms, prairie fires and blizzards along with the demands of daily Trek life. Wearing pioneer clothing styles during the Trek adds to the spirit and authenticity of the experience and it is fun! Begin by speaking with your family and finding out if any members of your family have clothing that you can wear on the Trek. Let the Relief Society and Priesthood know of the Pioneer clothing need of the YM and YW. Ward clothing donations as well as cotton fabric will help as your youth begin assembling their outfits. Local thrift stores can be a resource in finding period clothing from the Pioneer Era. Sew the clothing yourself! Organize a group-sewing day with skilled Relief Society sisters or as a mid-week activity. Purchasing clothing from companies who specialize in Pioneer clothing can be costly. It is suggested that you use this as a last resort. PRINCIPLES IN ASSEMBLING YOUR CLOTHING Prepare now to attire yourself in proper period clothing during the Trek. Having the proper and correct clothing will make or break your Trek experience. There are no stores on the prairie to stop and pick up something you didn t plan for. As you select your Pioneer clothing fabrics, keep in mind the weather, recommended would be lightweight cottons and natural fiber materials. You will get hot, sweaty and dirty on this Trek, so light-colored, breathable, cotton or linen fabrics will work best. Manmade fibers (polyester, rayon and fleece) are a fire hazard. Your clothes will get grubby so simple and inexpensive is best. The spending of excessive money and time on your pioneer clothing is strongly discouraged Here are a few guidelines for you to follow. SHOES FOR BOTH MEN AND WOMEN need not be period style. Comfort is most important. Sneakers work well. Do not wear new hiking boots or western style boots unless you have taken at least two months to break them in. Bring two pair, so if one gets wet or cause blisters, the other pair can be worn. GENERAL CLOTHING for both GIRLS and BOYS: All clothing is to be Pioneer oriented. Pack clean socks for each day, 1 light weight and one heavier per day. 1 Rain poncho (pack on top for easy access)-not a garbage sack 1 Lightweight jacket or sweatshirt (no logos) 1 Pair sweats or modest pajamas to sleep in, a knit hat is also good for sleeping in. Set of underwear per day 1 Pair work gloves (leather or canvas) Optional: Vest or Shawl WHAT NOT TO WEAR Blue jeans (Sorry, Levi Strauss didn t get his U.S. patent until 1873), baseball caps, tank tops, t-shirts, tight/short dresses, brand new shoes.

2 WOMEN S PIONEER CLOTHING You will need a total of 2 outfits comprised of the following combinations: Girls, rather than complete authenticity, go for the silhouette of a dress. It does not have to be a onepiece dress. Blouses: Long-sleeved white/light colored button-down blouses. Sleeves are long, but can be either narrow or full with buttons or bands at the wrists. Cotton fabrics in solid colors or small prints. Button front, high collar, Necklines could be high with buttons up the front or end at the base of your neck or plain crew neck collar blouses, or peter pan collar school uniform-type blouses have typical period looks. Skirts: Lightweight fabrics. Solids/small prints or checks in cotton or denim, solid or small print (no modern prints please). The skirts should have a full skirt wide enough to easily allow active movements including a long stride, and not be too long. Floor length is too long. Just above the ankles, or even a few inches shorter, is usually a good length. You should be able to walk up stairs in your skirt without having to lift it up with your hands to avoid stepping on it. Dresses: Following the same criteria as the blouses and skirts. Apron: The standard apron was six inches shorter than your skirt length. It was gathered at the waist and tied. The bib attached at the waist and was pinned to the dress bodice at the top two corners. Hence, the name pinafore (Pinned at two of the four corners) Daytime aprons were made of calico remnants. Sunday aprons were made from white fabric and did not have a bib. For trekking today, pockets are important to be able to carry different items along the trail. Bonnet: Women wore bonnets whenever they were outside to protect head, scalp, ears, neck and face. Typically, your bonnet will not match your dress or apron. Choose a bonnet that is light in both weight and color. Or a full brimmed straw hat. 2 pair of Pantaloons/Bloomers: Wearing pantaloons helps maintain modesty in trekking situations and also to keep your legs from chafing when walking, and they will protect your legs from bug bites.. These end just below the skirt/dress length. Pantaloons will add another layer to your clothing so keep this in mind as you select your fabric. Hospital pants or light weight P.J. pants, cut off mid calf and elastic added at the knee, work great. Try to stick with a small print, stripe or solid---and go for 100% cotton or mostly cotton. Easiest idea is to take some cotton pj bottoms or scrubs and add elastic to the bottom.

3 MEN S PIONEER CLOTHING You will need a total of 2 outfits comprised of the following combinations: Men s shirts: A button down long-sleeve shirt with a band collar shirt or a Sunday shirt with the collar cut off to create a band collar will also work. (No logos) Choose something larger than a regular fit, light colors recommended to reduce heat retention. Cotton, light in color and weight, solid colors were common, but pin stripes or plaids were also used (no modern prints). The shirt should be tucked into the trousers Pants: Long, loose fitting cotton or linen pants, dockers, corduroy, khaki, plain cargo pants or non-polyester suit pants (No jeans, camo or cargo pants). Choose rather loose fitting through the crotch and thigh area to add comfort in walking 1 pair of Suspenders/belt: 1 pair suspenders, or rope for a belt. Hat: Wide brimmed hat, straw hat, felt hat, newsies cap (no baseball caps or army hats) TIP #1- BORROW A COSTUME Borrow from anyone who might have done a Trek previously. Very likely someone in your ward might have a costume stash somewhere. Or raid your mom's closet for that old 1980's or 1990's button-down flower print dress with the lacy collar (you can take out the shoulder pads), or Dad's old Sunday shirts and pants. Remember, your clothes will get sweaty, soiled and possibly ruined so do NOT borrow a nice costume that you must return in prime shape.

4 TIP #2- HUNT A THRIFT STORE FOR PIONEER-LOOKING CLOTHING BE CREATIVE WITHOUT SPENDING A LOT OF MONEY! Desert Industries has many locations in our area. Redwood Road 2994 S. Glen Eagle Dr. TIP #3 IDEAS FOR MODIFYING- GET CREATIVE: Experienced sewers, and crafty Young Women & Men, feel free to make your own patterns or modify existing items. Here are some ideas below. SKIRTS can be made from curtain window panels or cute bed sheet (think solids or small pattern, nothing too modern- be careful that the fabric is not too thin or transparent- it will be too revealing, especially when wet), use the curtain casing at the top (or create one) for a drawstring or elastic band, sewn up the side(s) and hem the bottom if necessary. You can make an elastic waist skirt, be sure that it is full enough for easy walking. APRONS too can be made of 1/2 length cafe or tier window panels, which come in pairs so share with a friend! Apron ties can be made of wide bias tape or binding. Aprons can be easily constructed from a pillowcase. You can get one from the DI for $1-$2---or even better, get it from your Grandma's closet! Look for one that only has one side seam and a king pillowcase is best although any size will do. If it has a contrasting border or ruffle---even better, as that will be the bottom of the apron. BLOOMERS can be made by purchasing some cute white 1/2 length cafe curtains or tier curtains (think white eyelet fabric, battenberg lace), sew it up to make pant legs, and use the casing for the curtain rod for a draw string or elastic waistband). BLOOMERS can also be made from hospital scrubs. Cut them off to capri length and add cute little eyelet trim. BONNETS That will take about ¾ of a yard---however, if you can find 2 matching pillowcases---the 2 nd pillowcase can be your bonnet, and you will be a color coordinated pioneer fashion queen.

5 TIP #4- SEW YOUR OWN COSTUME- PATTERNS See patterns and instructions for: Tiered Pioneer Skirt, Simple Apron, Pioneer Man s Work Shirt, and Pioneer Bonnet at the end of these instructions. Commercial patterns are available at many local fabric stores as well as the links below. Possibilities are not confined to these patterns, but this is a good place to start. Whether it is learning a skill, sewing a personal outfit, to helping another friend along, or organizing a group or class effort, much can be applied. Get creative! If you make your trek clothes, you will be able to count it as a Value Project in either Divine Nature or knowledge---bonus! (And---going on Trek can count as your Faith Project!)
