Model-based Requirements Engineering Webinar Questions and answers September 18, 2014 General questions How does the tool support performance requirements? An example of performance requirements for my question is a set of response times established by the stakeholders. SysML Requirements diagram has a dedicated element to specify a performance requirement. Did you get the pictures (System Context) from Cameo Systems Modeler? Yes. This is the Internal Block Diagram showing with custom images assigned for parts. Is the web portal "read-only"? Yes. We are working at the moment on a read - write portal version, with the code name Collaborator Are the validation suites you used for requirements coverage part of MagicDraw or do they need to be developed by each project? The Cameo Systems Modeler comes with tens of sample validation constraints. The Object Constraint Language (OCL) language is dedicated for model queries. Constraints are specified in this language. This allows easy constraints adjusting for particular needs without input from development. The particular validation suite, which was demonstrated, is not part of the product yet, but we would be more than glad to share it with you through customer support or any other channel. If you have diagrammed system functions in swim lanes, can you show requirements against functions in the diagram? Yes, you can show property on requirement which shows the requirement satisfying element, or show the related elements in the note attached to a requirement. However the simplest way is to create a Dependency Matrix to represent traceability between elements. What is an Extended Requirement? It extends a requirement element with additional properties: Risk, Source. Also there are more specific requirements as business, functional, performance, which extends a requirement. How far did you test scalability? How many requirements have you loaded and managed? The requirement is a model element. We test projects with hundreds of thousands of model elements. It is not a problem to have many of them in the model. However from the best modeling practice perspective it is suggested to have 7 elements per diagram, and multiple abstraction levels. Also it is recommended to have multiple tables with no more that requirements. All the recommendations are in order to have better readability of the diagrams and tables. Are requirement IDs auto generated or manually typed in? IDs can be generated in one of the default (multi-level, consecutive) or custom styles. Also they can be manually specified. The manual method is good when requirements are imported from an external source. Can I include state in requirement (e.g. implemented, verified, etc.) Yes. You can extend requirements to show custom property. Such property value can be the state of State Machine. I would like to attend some additional webinars. You can find the webinar schedule at Can I look at this at a later time? Yes. Please find the link to the webinar: Thank you! Bye! Nice Webinar! Bye! Hope you will become our happy client :). See you on our next webinars!
MS Word If you need to generate a requirements document in MS Word for external stakeholder, how do you do it? required. Would it be possible to export the requirements diagrams, tables, and analysis, etc. to MS Word or PDF for an external stakeholder? required. The MS Word document can be saved as a PDF. Also you can go to File > Print... and print ). Is it possible to import from text based formats, such as MS word or pdf files? (Assuming the document is properly structured) Import from MS Word or PDF is not available at the moment. Requirements can be imported (including reimport) from: * ReqIF - Requirements Interchange Format. For requirement analysis, ReqIF is the same as Unified Modeling Language (UML) for modeling it is the most popular and dedicated requirements interchange format. Import is tested with: IBM Rational DOORS 9.4, 9.5, Next Generation, Polarion, PTC Integrity, Siemens TC, and other ReqIF 1.0 compatible data sources. * MS Excel * Comma Separated Values (CSV) * IBM Rational DOORS (Bi-directional synchronization). Would it be possible to export the requirements diagrams, tables, and analysis, etc. to MS Word or PDF for an external stakeholder? required. The MS Word document can be saved as a PDF. Also you can go to File > ). If you need to generate a requirements document in MS Word for external stakeholder, how do you do it? required. Glossary Is Glossary available as part of MagicDraw, or only in Cameo Systems Modeler? Glossary is available in Cameo Systems Modeler starting from Architect edition and MagicDraw starting from Standard edition. When automatically creating the glossary from actors, is the glossary definition permanently linked to the actors definition? If you change one, does it change the other? Yes. The element is treated as a glossary term if it is added into the glossary table. The change of element name or documentation would update the glossary term name and documentation and vice versa as this is the same element.
Is there a way to assign aliases to glossary terms? I saw that there's a "synonym" field for glossaries, but that doesn't do anything from what I can tell. The field was left intentionally. We are considering extending glossary capabilities in future. Right now aliases are not supported. Can a glossary be unique for each model? Yes. Also you can have multiple glossaries in one project, or reuse the same glossaries in multiple projects. The glossary implementation employs the "description" field, an owned comment, to hold the term's definition. Shouldn't the definition be a property of the term? The term could have the property term, but this would limit reusability of existing information. Now the existing element can be reused as a glossary term. The owned comment is reused as a definition. Can we have multiple glossaries? Yes. As many as are required. Change and version management Sorry if I did not understand that point: how do you handle a change in the input requirement MS Excel file? How can you analyze the impact on the model? You can create multilevel traceability map with help of a Relation Map which shows the impact of the requirement change on functional architecture, physical architecture, etc. In the case of an import from MS Excel and CSV, the Difference Viewer allows comparing projects and visually shows the changes between two different versions of the project. In the case of an import from ReqIF and IBM Rational DOORS you get the change list right after reimport. Does MagicDraw record the previous versions of requirements, along with the user and date of each revision? Yes. Versions management is available using Teamwork Server. The server side software is dedicated for model version control, configuration management, and collaboration work in the team. More is available at The Difference Viewer visually shows the changes between any two different version of the project. Do you have change control that tracks deltas between imports of requirements Difference Viewer visually shows the changes between any two different version of the project before and after import. Does MagicDraw support version management of the model data, e.g. changed requirements, etc. Version management is available using Teamwork Server. The server side software is dedicated for model version control, configuration management, and collaboration work in the team. More is available at Integrations Why do you need DOORS if this tool already supports requirements integration and document export? Cameo Systems Modeler can be used for requirements specification or as integration platform integrating requirements information and linking them to the model. You do not need to have IBM Rational DOORS. However if you have IBM Rational DOORS, we integrate with it to ensure data import or traceability between requirements and design, UI, Use Cases, etc., in the model. You can migrate to Cameo Systems Modeler. The main benefit of having requirements in the model is to have a single place for the requirements and design: easier to manage, trace, document, review, update, and analyze. It saves time
and money when people are working with a single application. What is the behavior of the product when reimporting requirements? Can you update the existing requirements that you have imported from excel, with an updated excel file? This depends on the source from which the requirements are reimported. In the case of IBM Rational DOORS and ReqIF, an import shows the status of imported, updated, removed, new requirements. In thr case of IBM Rational DOORS, ReqIF, and CSV, an import recognizes and updates requirements by element IDs. In the case of an import from MS Excel, a reimport is by name. If reimported requirement already exist in the model, the properties of the requirement will be updated, without removing any relations this element already has in the model. When you do an import from excel, can you include tag values for requirements using the columns in excel? Yes. You can map to existing requirement properties or create custom ones. Is it possible to import from text based formats, such as MS word or pdf files? (Assuming the document is properly structured.) Import from MS Word or PDF is not available at the moment. Is it possible to create requirements with MBSEPak by Phoenix Integration and link them in the same way as you did with Excel? Cameo Systems Modeler is source of the requirements in the case of integration with Model Analyzer. MBSEPak allows linking requirements in Cameo Systems Modeler with Model Analyzer for different types of analysis. As far as I can see, test cases can be linked to requirements. However, if I have my test cases in the modelling tool, how can I manage the test execution? In solutions like HP QC or testlink the whole chain from requirement to test execution result can be traced. Can this be done in the modelling tool as well? Test tool integration would ensure traceability. At the moment we are considering integrations with testing solutions. Can you export arbitrary additional data back to DOORS, for instance the names of design elements which are affected by a requirement? Yes. Cameo DataHub allows bidirectional data synchronization Requirements model (including any custom properties which could link to related design elements) and IBM Rational DOORS. Licensing and product configuration Is this an add-on to MagicDraw? What version of MagicDraw is required for this functionality? The Webinar was presented using Cameo Systems Modeler, of which, Architect Edition includes MagicDraw, SysML plugin, and everything presented. Cameo Systems Modeler Enterprise Edition additionally includes the Cameo Simulation Toolkit. Alternatively you can use MagicDraw with SysML plugin. The SysML plugin includes Cameo Requirements Modeler for no additional cost.
How much requirements management and SysML view capabilities exist in just the basic MagicDraw tool with SysML plugin? It appears this requires Cameo Systems Modeler. During the presentation we were using the Cameo Systems Modeler Architect edition. Alternatively you can use the MagicDraw + SysML Plugin. Is it possible to use BPMN, UML diagrams in Cameo System Modeler? UML diagrams are available by default, just change the perspective to Full Feature. The BPMN diagrams are available together with BPMN Plugin for an additional price. For your demonstration you used Cameo Systems Modeler. What is the benefit over MagicDraw for requirements? Cameo Systems Modeler has support for Requirements as part of the SysML standard. This includes all the means dedicated for requirements engineering: diagrams, relation maps, matrix, and tables. Also it includes requirements import from ReqIF. SysML, in contrast to UML, gives the ability to specify nonfunctional q m Sy ML q m m g k h x q m and the rest of the model elements. Straight forward mapping is available when importing from MS Excel, IBM Rational DOORS, and Comma Separated Values format. SysML also provides traceability for requirements out of the box to source: Where it came from (e.g. containment, derive, copy, and trace relationships). And t g : H m m h y m g g fy, fy, f relationships).
