Topics include identification of hardware components, basic computer operations, security issues, and use of software applications. Upon completion, students should be able to demonstrate an understanding of the role and function of computers and use the computer to solve problems. This course has been approved to satisfy the Comprehensive Articulation Agreement general education core requirement in natural science/mathematics (Quantitative Option). PREREQUISITES ENG 095, MAT 060, MAT 070 ~ or ~ Accuplacer scores placing you out of those courses. COURSE OBJECTIVES 1. Demonstrate knowledge and competency in the use of personal computers to solve problems. 2. Be able to differentiate and describe major components of computers. 3. Possess a basic understanding of data representations, storage, and processing. 4. Possess a basic understanding of hardware and software requirements for data communications. 5. Be able to use an integrated software package (MICROSOFT Office Professional) and its component applications to solve problems and represent data. 6. Demonstrate a basic understanding of the use and integration of the Internet with computer software applications. 7. Possess a basic understanding of the impact of computing technology on our community. SAM Testing and Assessment access will come with your textbook bundle. Instructions for creating your SAM account are detailed in your Online Orientation Assignment. MAC users: you can use Office 2010 for MAC. If you do not have access to Office for MAC, your instructor can provide you access to the VCL (Virtual Computer Lab) to access required Microsoft Programs for the course. MAC users must be able to access the Internet. Please contact the instructor for additional information.

2 *Also please be aware that you may also receive with your textbook bundle a SAMPLE trial version software CD for Microsoft Office. If you do not already have MS Office 2010 installed on your computer, you will want to go ahead and load this software, but make sure you do a custom install so that you can opt to keep your older versions of Office when the new trial MS Office software expires. You don't want to do the recommended install, because this may completely erase your current version of Microsoft Office leaving you with no Microsoft Office programs after the trial is over. For best results in accessing Blackboard, course material related to the textbook and SAM, use Microsoft Internet Explorer browser or Mozilla Firefox browser. Generally, computers with faster Internet connections, faster processors, and more memory will get better results. Keep in mind that if you have difficulties connecting to the class or a slow connection, the problem could be occurring at many levels. For help, look at the "Technical Difficulties" document in "How this Course Works" under "Course Information" or try the Technical Help Forum on the course Discussion Board. PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS AND ATTENDANCE The following are the primary expectations of all students: self-directed work toward completion of assignments, on-time completion of assignments, attendance at all classes, and effective personal leadership and management. You are expected to complete your work on time by the due dates. You have plenty of time to complete all the work for each module. LAB RULES- When on campus: No food or drinks in the labs at any time. Cell phones - OFF or vibrate Absolutely NO text messaging Acceptable use of the computers in the labs, including access to the Internet and electronic mail as delineated in the CFCC Catalog and Student handbook. ACADEMIC HONESTY CFCC requires of students complete academic honesty in the completion of all assigned work. The discipline policy for academic dishonesty (cheating) can be found in the current CFCC Catalog and Student Handbook. Please note - If you share a computer with another CIS student, please make sure that you create a folder with your name on the desktop and save all files there. If you submit another student's work or allow another student to submit your work, you will be dropped from the course with a grade of "F". I will not accept the excuse that you did so because you share a computer or that you are "computer illiterate". STUDENT ACCOUNTS mycfcc is your student web portal - there you can access your class websites, , and WebAdvisor (official academic info such as grades, transcripts, schedules, etc). Your official CFCC-provided account is to be used for all correspondence with your instructors and CFCC staff. Some information from CFCC will ONLY be ed to this address, and not sent through postal mail, so it is very important that you check this account. To access this account, visit the mycfcc portal - there is a link to the portal near the top of the CFCC.edu website. Login and click the link. Your username is part of your address: user@mail.cfcc.edu. (Note if you've had a CFCC address in the past, this one differs because we've changed ' ' to 'mail' in the address.) This account is provided to you as long as you are enrolled in classes (you can take the summer off), and may be used for personal as well as academic . STUDENTS WITH SPECIAL NEEDS If you are a person with a disability and anticipate needing accommodations of any type in order to participate in this class, you must notify Disability Support Services (room A-215, or ), provide necessary documentation of the disability, and arrange for the appropriate authorized accommodations. Once these accommodations are approved, please identify yourself so we can implement these accommodations. All discussions regarding your disability will remain confidential. Students are required to provide a copy of the Accommodation Letter from Disability Support Services as soon as possible, preferably by the end of the first week of classes. You should then meet with me to make mutually agreeable arrangements based on the recommendations of the Accommodation Letter. Course handouts will be available in an alternate format through Disability Support Services if needed. ATTENDANCE REQUIREMENTS Distance Learning Entry, Attendance and Withdrawal Procedures for Internet Courses Class Entry

3 Distance Learning (DL) courses may be audited at any time; therefore, instructors must have documentation of participation by students. The first day of classes at CFCC is considered the first day of classes for all DL courses (hybrid and Internet). Students must complete the Enrollment Verification activity before the end of the 10% Census Date. The Census Date is used by the state to calculate FTE (full-time equivalent) to determine funding for the College; therefore, it is critical that instructors note attendance during the first 10% of the course. Is the same for all DL mini or full-session courses and corresponds to the 10% date based on first day of classes. Students must login and complete the Enrollment Verification by the end of the 10% Census Date in order to be counted toward FTE. For Internet courses, the E (Entry) date corresponds to the date that students complete the Enrollment Verification. A student is considered a NO SHOW (NS) if he/she has not completed an Enrollment Verification by the Census Date. Please make every effort to login to the course site before the end of the Census Date. The Census Date for Spring 2013 full session online courses is Tuesday, January 15 th. If you do not complete your enrollment verification before 11:59PM on January 15, 2013, you will be dropped from the course as a No Show. Attendance After the Census Date, Internet course attendance is based on whether students miss 20% of their total course work. That is the equivalent of 20% of their total grade for the course. Missing 20% of their course work is equivalent to missing 20% of attendance in face-to-face courses which results in a grade of F. Withdrawal Withdrawal procedures for online students follow the same guidelines as traditional courses. For Internet students who are truly distant (not in the area), you may contact the instructor by to coordinate the withdrawal procedure based on the grade (W, WP, WF). Students who have withdrawn will automatically be blocked from the online course. The last day for withdrawing during the full session for Spring 2013 is Friday, April 12 th. I will not approve any withdrawals after that date. Absences Due To Religious Observances Students will be allowed two days of excused absence each academic year for religious observances required by the faith of the student. These excused absences will be included in the twenty (20%) percent of allowable clock hour absences. Students are required to provide written notice of the request for an excused absence by completing the Religious Observance Absence form available in Student Development. The completed form must be submitted to the Vice President of Student Development or his/her designee a minimum of ten (10) school days prior to the religious observance. The Vice President of Student Development or his/her designee will notify the instructor within three (3) school days of receiving the request. Students will be given the opportunity to make up any tests or other work missed due to the excused absence and should work with their instructors in advance of the excused absence to delineate how to make up the missed coursework (N.C.G.S. 115D-5). TOBACCO USE POLICY Tobacco use is prohibited on all CFCC property, except in the designated area at the North Campus. If a student is found using tobacco products outside of the designated area, the first offense is a warning and the second offense may result in disciplinary action. NO CHILDREN ON CAMPUS Children cannot be taken into classrooms, laboratories or shops unless authorized by College personnel. Children cannot be left unattended on campus including the Learning Resource Center, the cafeteria, lounge areas, registrations sites, administrative offices or parking lots. Failure to comply with this policy will lead to disciplinary action. 4 Essential Computer Concepts Practical Computer Security Windows 7 Microsoft PowerPoint 2010 Microsoft Word 2010 Integrating Word, Excel, and PowerPoint 2010 Microsoft Excel 2010 Microsoft Access 2010 EXAMS Exams will generally consist of two sections using SAM software. The first section will be a mixture of multiple choice and true/false questions. The second section will be computer exercises using the indicated computer software applications using SAM : Exam 1: Control of the computer system and file management (Essential Concepts and WIN7) Exam 2: Document creation, formatting and editing (MS Word) and Internet subject-matter research Exam 3: Numerical analysis and calculations, and charting (MS Excel), including Internet Exam 4: Relational database creation and maintenance (MS Access) Exam 5: Graphics and presentation support (MS PowerPoint) and Integration in Office 2010 Final: Cumulative Test focused on Integration of WIN7, MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint, MS Access and Internet Explorer FINAL EXAM: Completing the cumulative Final Exam will require you to visit the North Campus of Cape Fear Community College, 4500 Blue Clay Road, Castle Hayne, NC Your instructor will provide you with additional Final Exam information in the Announcement Page for your course section in Blackboard. The Final Exam will be worth 35% of your course grade for CIS 110. IF YOU ARE TRULY AT A DISTANCE: If you are unable to come to the North Campus due to considerable distance, please your instructor as soon as you can. It will be your responsibility to secure a test-taking facility and proctor for administration of the Final Exam off campus. You must provide me the proctor's contact information early within the semester.
