1 Superheroes Training Camp Finding my Superpowers and using them to Do Good This program guides you through the Feel Imagine Do Share Process and will take you on a journey of games and fun where you will uncover your powers to change the world. Pick and choose the activities that empower them to do acts of kindness. You can do it in a week or over a longer period of time. Together you will create a story of change out of acts of kindness your superheroes design. The Beginning of the Story Me as a Superhero Feel Objective: To raise the awareness of the children to their inner resources and powers and to practice us those strengths and gifts for the benefit of others Materials: Black/white board, chalk, markers, paper, coloring pencils and crayons, string and cardboard discs, stickers Prep: Group discussion (write the children s remarks and answers on a board) What is a superhero? What does it mean to be one? What superheroes do they know? Who are the superheroes of today? What special talents do you have? What are you great at? What power do you wish you had? For example: I m great on a bike, I like walking my dog, I m very social, I can bake, I draw well 1. Draw a big circle on the floor or stand around a carpet. 2. Read the list of powers one by one aloud and instruct the players to jump into the circle if they possess this power. Write the names of the children who jump in for each power. 3. Hand out the medallion stickers and coloring materials and instruct them to draw themselves as superheroes on the sticker and make their medallion

2 Para Olympics Objective: Empathy with people who have certain disabilities and using our disabilities as resources for success Materials: Rope to tie legs together, eye covers, building blocks, molding clay a. Three legged race Divide the group into pairs Tie left and right legs together with rope Stand the pairs in a row Ready, set, GO!? Feel? b. A guided tour of the blind Objective: What does it feel like to be blind? Instructions: Divide the group into pairs one is the "blind" and one is the "sighted" Walk around the area, the sighted leading the blind, while describing in utmost detail for the "blind" what can be seen in the area. Change places. How does it feel to trust someone to guide you without getting hurt? How did you feel while being the "eyes" for someone else? Did you notice anything you hadn't noticed before? c. Blind sculpting Divide the group into pairs Give each pair 1. Eye cover and 2. one of the materials you ve prepared One player covers her eyes and the other instructs her to build a model according to the instructions Change roles

3 Reflections on the games Was that fun? How does it feel to function without all our natural abilities? How well are we attuned to the other? How well do we listen? What do people with disabilities have to cope with that you don t? Who will you look at differently tomorrow? What will you see Rock.Paper.Scissors Divide the group into threes Each call the players have to put out Rock, Paper or Scissors The winner of best out of three tries raises her or his hand and triples up with another two winners whose hands are raised The two players of the group follow their winner and root for her or him in the next round Each round the winners regroup and the rest of the group cheers on the player they are following. Group discussion: What does it feel like to win? How does it feel to lose? How does it feel to cheer on or be cheered on? What situations like these have you experienced? What is a team player? What do you gain? What do you have to give up? Making Someday Today Attachment 1

4 Listening with our hearts Empathy Training Prepare a projector Show the children this Sesame St. clip that teaches kids what is empathy Listening With our HEARTS Objective: sensitizing the children to what people feel in different situations and observing with their ears, eyes and hearts Materials: What do they feel? Cards (attachment 2 Print out pictures) HEARTS (attachment 3 Print out according the number of participants in your group) Spread the cards on the floor so everyone can see Ask the children to pick a picture and tell us what the people or animals in the picture are feeling. What super powers do you have that can help them Every suggestion is rewarded with an ear to be placed over their hearts.

5 Superheroes around the world who said I CAN and DID Objective: Exposure to children initiatives and the processes followed that taught them how to create change Materials: Projector, links or downloads of clips, popcorn and observation sheets (Attachment 4) Watch the clips together and fill out the observation sheets as you go along. 6 IMAGINE Instant Superheroes Duration: 45 minutes Objective: practicing the "Design for Change process Materials: poster board, markers, balls Instructions: Preface: Carry out a discussion about superheroes who we meet when they go into action saving what they can of the situation. "What is activism?" What does it mean to be when you actually put your words into action? Circle of problems: In one large circle, participants throw the ball to each other. The pupil holding the ball telling something that made them upset, sad, angry or concerned. Then throw the ball on to the next person until everyone has raised one issue. Write down the situations that were raised: For example: When I sat by myself in recess; When I saw a student from an older grade push a little kid to get to the canteen first; when I saw a stray cat without it s mother; when cars wouldn t let me cross at the crosswalk and I was scared; when I had no one to sit next to in class; I hate getting homework; when I see people throwing their empty water bottles on the ground; I don t understand Arithmetic; old people Take a vote and choose between 4-6 issues

7 Divide into groups around the problems they care about the most. Each group gets a ball. 1. Pass the ball from one to another saying what he or she thinks about the problem and why it bothers them. For example: recess I feel like there s nothing to do when it raining outside; sometimes we don t have friends to play with; We don t have enough games for everyone; The older kids take the good playing spaces and we don t have where to play Take a vote and choose one aspect of recess you d like to change as a group 2. Write on each board: What is the problem? Example: Recess is boring on rainy days Who suffers from it? Everyone How often does it happen? Usually for a month in winter When does it happen? When they decide that the weather is too harsh to play outside Where does it happen? Kids make noise and run down the hallways, What are the reasons it happens? There are no monitors in the hallways, no games to play indoors; Now that you understand the problem it s time to take action!

8 HEART AND HANDS Distribute poster board and markers to each group. Ask the pupils to write the problem they chose and the words: "I CAN" in the center. Ask the pupils to trace the outline of their foot and hand, and a large "smiley". Instruct the pupils to write inside the outlines hand what they can do with their hands in order to rectify the problem. Then do the same with the outline of the foot how can they use their feet to rectify the problem. Next to the smiley, they should write how they can make a change with their mouth and face. What superhero qualities can they employ to fix the problem? Example: rainy day recesses Hands: I can make games to play when we re indoors; I can make sticker and signs for kids in the hallways not to run or scream Feet: We can set up a monitoring schedule for the hallways for recess indoor times Mouth: Raise the awareness not to run and scream during recess; have a singing contest (The Voice) during recesses with a bunch of classes together Sharing and summary Quiet, we re dreaming Objective: To nurture imagination Materials: Projector, scissors, balloons, string, helium tank Show the children this clip Cut out the hands, feet and smiley s you prepared in the last activity and tie each one to a balloon. At the count of three let the balloons fly up high

9 DO Design a Superhero cape and mask Objective: Preparing ourselves as superheroes and going out to do good Materials: Cloth or materials to make capes and decorate them and masks 1. Each superhero prepares a cape and mask representing his or her superpower 2. Return to your groups and think of solutions to the problem you chose using your superpowers. All acts of kindness are good ideas. Creative ideas, bold ideas and lots of ideas should be considered. 3. Design your plan of action 4. Groups share their ideas and give and receive feedback 5. Go back to your groups and improve your project 6. Plan your action: Who will do what? Superheroes in Action Objective: Putting values into action Each group will go out and do their acts of change Observe what your actions cause. Document with pictures what you ve done

10 SHARE Preparing our Superheroes to tell their stories Visual Harvesting: Objective: Reflection on process and experiences Materials: Post-its, pencils, Three to five meters of construction paper spread on the floor or pasted across a wall, crayons or markers Divide the group into their action groups Ask the superheroes to think of what they did, or enjoyed, learned, surprised them, bothered them or that they created throughout the process and draw it. When everyone has finished each group will use the story board they created to tell their superhero story. Be Contagious Invite your communities and share your Superhero stories wearing your capes on your backs and your hearts on your sleeves.
