1 Faculty: Seong K. Mun, PhD, Director Kenneth H. Wong, PhD Alpay Özcan, PhD Shih-Chung Ben Lo, PhD Matthew Freedman, MD Arlington Innovation Center: Health Research (AIC:HR) Annual Report for the College of Science July 1, 2014 to June 30, 2015 A. Grants A.1. Active Grants P.I: Shih-Chung Ben Lo Title: Evaluation of Riverain ClearRead-CT-Insight for Assisting Radiologist in Lung Cancer Detection on Thoracic CT images Amount: $280,000 Sponsor: Riverain Technologies, LLC Period: 15-Feb-2015 to 14-May This is a project to test certain image processing software to improve the detectability of lung cancer nodules in CT images. RIVERAIN has developed a set of CT CAD algorithms and VIRGINA TECH is under a research contract to conduct a Machine Test and a Reader Performance Evaluation for the purpose of supporting RIVERAIN s FDA 510(K) application. The evaluation study involves radiologists reviewing set of images with and with processing. P.I. Seong K. Mun Title: Neuroperformance Imaging Amount: $1,498,000; Sponsor; U.S. Army Contract W23RYX1089N603 Perdiod: 1-May-2011 to 19-Sept-2015 This project is a collaborative effort between Virginia Tech, Washington University in St. Louis, and Gachon University in South Korea. The project focuses on the role of sleep in neuroperformance, with particular emphasis on (1) PET/MRI studies to understand dopamine, acetylcholine, and serotonin sleep regulatory systems in the brain, particularly in the brainstem and thalamus; (2) EEG/fMRI studies focusing on the functional connectivity of networks between the thalamus and cortex that control the
2 descent into sleep and are altered by sleep deprivation; (3) Development of reference image databases for high field MRI studies of the brain. We organized a Workshop at the Virginia Tech Research Center-Arlington on June 22-23, 2015, in order to review and develop a strategy for research on the effects of sleep and sleep disturbance as it related to mood and emotional stress responses in cognitive performance. A publication is forthcoming outlining the outcomes of the workshop. P.I.: Kenneth H. Wong, Title: Rugged Medic SmartPhone Amount: $1,357,023; Sponsor: Department of the Army Period: 30-Sep-2012 to 31-Dec-2015 This product is to develop a prototype mobile systems for the military medics triaging combat casualty. Project activity - Participated in C4ISR (Command, Control, Communications, Computers, Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance) Network Modernization E15 at Joint Base MDL in New Jersey. During this four week exercise, we integrated our medical smartphone technology with technology from other contractors and Army research and development entities such as Communications-Electronics Research, Development and Engineering Center (CERDEC) and Medical Communications for Combat Casualty Care (MC4). These technologies were then tested in a realistic field environment under simulated battlefield conditions. Simulated scenarios included checkpoint defense, convoy ambush, assault in forest and urban settings, and humanitarian missions in potentially hostile territory. All scenarios included ground ambulance and air ambulance casualty evacuation. Soldiers and medics led these exercises and provided daily feedback on technology usability, effectiveness, suitability and potential improvements. Simulations were also guided and observed by a team of expert evaluators. Our team brought rapid prototyping systems to this exercise and were able to work with air medics to design and feasibility-test a system for secure wireless audio communication with a medical smartphone inside a helicopter environment. The data gathered during this exercise will help to inform future fundamental research and pathways for translation of our research to a higher Technology Readiness Level (TRL). A NCTE has been received for this project through to December 31, Negotiation is underway for the Third year funding. P.I. Seong K. Mun, Title: Open Source Electronic Health Record Agent Amount: $346,140; Sponsor; Veterans Affairs/ OEHRA 2

OSEHRA is a non-profit organization established by the Department of Veterans Affairs to promote the adoption of open source methodology for improving VistA software. Dr. Mun provides technical and management leadership of the program activities of OSEHRA. This project has also been extended with additional funding through to December 31, A.2.
