1 Assessment Plan Fiscal Year 2012 Department of Entrepreneurship College of Business and Public Administration University of North Dakota Department Chair (As of July 1, 2011): Craig A. Silvernagel, M.B.A. Contact Name: Tara Johnson Contact Phone: Contact

2 MISSION OF THE UNIT: The Department finalized and approved its mission statement in FY The Department of Entrepreneurship will create and connect to practice new knowledge related to nascent venture creation, development, and finance. Entrepreneurship Program participants will be prepared to design and launch their own ventures regardless of mission (for profit, not-for-profit or social) or effectively serve existing organizations. Interdisciplinary curricular content will focus on experiential learning of core entrepreneurship, creativity and innovation principles. The Department will serve both the region and strategic non-regional locations. ASSESSMENT OF STUDENT LEARNING Following is a preview of Department of Entrepreneurship learning goals embedded in the Assurance of Learning (AoL) Plan (presented below). The Department has chosen a portfolio model for assessing student learning as outlined in the UND academic catalog. Department syllabi now contain common language identifying a portfolio project from each Entrepreneurship course to be placed in the student portfolio and a reminder of the new portfolio/presentation graduation requirement. Students following the catalog (or later) will be bound by this AoL requirement. Entrepreneurship Goal 1: Students will be able to recognize, construct, and analyze feasible entrepreneurial venture concepts. Objective 1.1: Objective 1.2: Objective 1.3: Students will learn the seemingly simple yet profound difference between product ideas and viable business opportunities. Students will learn to develop and present venture plans supported by compelling data. Students will learn to present venture plans convincingly. Entrepreneurship Goal 2: Students will be able to propose appropriate plans for funding a venture. Objective 2.1: Objective 2.2: Students will learn the financial demands and requirements of starting a business. Students will learn the financial demands and requirements of building an existing business. Entrepreneurship Goal 3: Students will learn to pursue opportunity, implement ideas, and solve problems entrepreneurially. Objective 3.1: Objective 3.2: Students will learn entrepreneurial behavior through a practical experience. Students will learn core creativity and innovation principles.

3 The intention of this plan is to illustrate, with clarity, the student learning goals and objectives for the entrepreneurship undergraduate program. The document details which educational experience(s) will assess each objective, potential types of assignments that could be used to assess the objectives, and the semester each course is scheduled to assess its objective(s). Faculty members are to exercise their discretion in choosing equivalent assignments that will still assess the stated learning goals and objectives. The faculty of the Entrepreneurship Department has chosen to implement a portfolio approach to the collection of information to support this assessment plan. Each semester, student products will be chosen to be included in the student portfolio representing each of the program learning goals. This product will be a paper, presentation, assignment, etc. that will be placed into the portfolio as an ungraded piece. Each semester, portfolio materials will be assessed from among the students graduating that semester. All students will deliver a final oral presentation about the key lessons they have learned from their Entrepreneurship studies. Each of the faculty needs to be vigilant in ensuring that students are aware of the chosen assignments to be placed in the portfolio. This will be accomplished by ensuring that all syllabi include a section referencing what to do with portfolio assignments. The Entrepreneurship Department Chair must ensure that faculty, including adjunct faculty, indicate clearly how these items are to be included in the portfolio. The assessment team, composed of selected members of the Entrepreneurship Faculty and led by the Entrepreneurship Department Chair, must schedule meetings with graduating Entrepreneurship Majors. The group must provide a review of selected objectives and provide feedback to faculty members regarding what is being accomplished and other items that have not yet been accomplished. This will provide the necessary loop closing to assure that learning has occurred. The following tables detail the assessment assignments and corresponding courses for each of the learning goals and objectives:
