12 Flexcon pressure expansion vessels The decision to go for the quality of a Flexcon diaphragm pressure expansion vessel is a guarantee of satisfaction. Flamco has long stood head and shoulders above other producers of diaphragm pressure expansion vessels. However, a good brand reputation alone is not enough for sustained success in a competitive market. Flamco s standard programme covers a wide range of expansion vessels from 2-8,000 litres with a wide choice of pre-pressures and maximum operating pressures. All models are characterised by their construction, topquality diaphragm, high-quality coating (on the expansion vessel itself) and efficient production methods. The two halves of the vessel are coated prior to assembly. Flexcon expansion vessels aredelivered in a stackable cardboard packaging and each box contains clear assembly instructions. Flexcon expansion vessels are always in stock at our wholesalers and our own warehouses. Qualified Flamco employees will be happy to give you advice and support. They are just a telephone call away. FLEXCON 2-4 FLEXCON 8-25 FLEXCON FLEXCON 110-1, Systems with Flexcon expansion vessels 1. Flexcon expansion vessel. 2. Prescor Safety valve. 3. Flamco tundish. 4. Flamcovent or Flexair air separator. 5. Flexcon pressure gauge. 6. Flexfast quick-release coupling. The extremely limited permeability of the diaphragm ensures that pre-pressure is retained for a long time and guarantees a long life. 14
13 Diaphragm expansion vessels 1 Flexcon diaphragm expansion vessels are made of top-quality steel and come with a gleaming red epoxy coating. The clamp is made of heavy-duty thermallygalvanised steel (sendzimir). Flexcon suitable for wall or floor mounting. From Flexcon 35 upwards, the diaphragm and the water valve are protected during storage and transport by a special protection cap. The benefits of Flexcon The best expansion vessels thanks to our groundbreaking technology. Excellent service before, during and after installation. Handy accessories for mounting and unmounting Flexcon expansion vessels. Our high quality diaphragms are suitable for use with anti-freeze. Exact details are available on request. All vessels are factory tested. The thread of the water connection is not coated which means the expansion vessel can be connected easily. The diaphragm action rolls up and down and is thus never stretched. This has a significant impact on its service life. The unique clamp construction damages neither the diaphragm nor the two halves of the expansion vessel. The nitrogen valve of Flexcon 8-80 litre expansion vessels is counter sunk and cannot be damaged due to the cap and extra protective cover. When cold, the nitrogen cushion presses the diaphragm against the wall of the Flexcon expansion vessel. When heated, the expansion vessel partially fills with water and the nitrogen volume is compressed. When heated further, the expansion vessel portion fully fills with water and the nitrogen volume is fully compressed. If the pressure rises too high, the Prescor valve opens. The excess water/steam is discharged. 15
14 Unvented hot water systems Unvented hot water systems are gaining in popularity and market share every year in the UK. The advantages that these unvented systems offer over traditional, vented systems has led to unvented systems becoming the standard for supplying domestic hot water. Unvented systems have the following characteristics: Pressure is applied directly by the incoming water supply. Pressure reducing valve limits the system pressure to a safe level as well as providing back flow prevention. A pressure and temperature relief valve provides protection against over-pressure and over-temperature. Expansion is accommodated by an expansion vessel. Hot water and heating systems (domestic example) The advantages of unvented systems include: Higher system pressure gives superior flow rates, improving the performance of taps and showers. No header tank required. Greater flexibility in system design. Easy to install and maintain. No risk of contamination. 16

17 Diaphragm expansion vessels 1 Sizing Flexcon expansion vessels Static height is the vertical distance from the expansion vessel mid point (lower part of system) to the highest point of the system above the expansion vessel. Basic calculation system water content x coefficient of expansion Vessel size = expansion vessel efficiency Expansion vessel efficiency (VE) max. pressure - min. pressure VE = max. pressure * Please note: Pressure must be in absolute units ( gauge pressure + 1 bar(g) ). Maximum pressure = maximum working pressure at the expansion vessel. Minimum pressure = expansion vessel gas charge (normally dependent on the system static height) bar(g) (0.7 bar(g) minimum). Maximum vessel efficiency Range Size Efficiency Flexcon litres (62.5%) Flexcon 800 litres 0.5 (50%) Flexcon 1,000 litres 0.4 (40%) Airfix P litres 0.6 (60%) Airfix P 750-1,000 litres 0.5 (50%) Airfix DE 50-3,000 litres 0.6 (60%) * Please note: The expansion vessel efficiency must not exceed the maximum stated by Flamco UK Ltd. sizing charts have taken this into consideration. Example (basic sizing) System Water content = 1,000 litres Temperature = 82 C. Maximum working pressure = 3 bar(g) Expansion vessel sizing (Gas charge 1 bar(g) ). 4-2 VE = = 0.5 (50%) Coefficient of expansion = ,000 x Expansion vessel size = = 64 litres. 0.5 Expansion coefficient Degrees centigrade [ C] (Use the nearest higher size. e.g. Flexcon 80/1). Coefficient of expansion (water with no additives) Heating systems - Flexcon standard expansion vessels Sizing to B.S heating and chilled water sealed systems up to 5 bar(g). Use the following criteria for calculations: Water content = system water content + 10%. Coefficient of expansion = use system highest temperature (not mean temp). Maximum pressure = safety valve setting - 10%. (e.g. for 3 bar(g) safety valve maximum pressure = 2.7 bar(g) ). Minimum pressure = expansion vessel gas charge. For elevated temperature systems it is necessary to ensure that the water at the highest point in the system does not flash to steam. An anti-flash margin, usually 11 deg.c, should be added to the flow temperature. The corresponding vapour pressure for this temperature should then be added to the static height of the system. This new minimum pressure must be used for the expansion calculations and will protect the system in accordance with BS 7074 pt2. If in doubt please contact Flamco UK Ltd. for advice. 19

19 Diaphragm expansion vessels 1 Vessel calculation for chilled systems Flexcon expansion vessels in chilled and air-conditioning systems Anti-freeze has an expansion coefficient that is much greater than that of water In a chilled system, Flexcon expansion vessels may have the following functions: As the system cools, the volume of the cooling water shrinks. If the system is turned off, the water can return to the ambient temperature, allowing it to expand. The vessel absorbs this expansion volume. All Flexcon expansion vessels can be used in systems in which glycol-based anti-freeze is added to the system water. The table below shows the increase in volume of various water/ethylene glycol mixing ratios. These are average values. Expansion coefficient of water with and without added anti-freeze Temperature Percentage of glycol [ C] 0% 10% 20% 30% 40% 50% Calculation for a Flexcon vessel in a chilled system Volume increase [%] vol.% [-40 C] 44 vol.% [-30 C] 39 vol.% [-25 C] 34 vol.% [-20 C] 28 vol.% [-15 C] 20 vol.% [-10 C] 1,31 1 0,78 0,64 0,44 0,13 0, Temperature [ C] 0 vol.% = water The following data is important in calculating the required volume of Flexcon expansion vessel: Volume of system water Percentage of added anti-freeze Lowest system temperature Maximum system temperature (= highest ambient temperature). Water - anti-freeze mix expansion (percentage). Static height of the system above the vessel. Maximum working pressure. The initial pressure of the expansion vessel is selected to match the static height of the system (above the expansion vessel). The temperature in the Flexcon expansion vessel must remain above -10 ºC. A buffer vessel or Flexcon intermediate expansion vessel may have to be fitted between the system and the Flexcon expansion vessel. 21

28 Flexcon VSV intermediate vessels In sealed heating systems, the supply temperature can reach 120 C. The continuous temperature load on the diaphragm in the Flexcon vessels is max. 70 C in compliance with the appropriate standard. That is why Flexcon expansion vessels must be fitted in the return line. If the temperature in the return line is not capped at 70 C, an intermediate vessel must be fitted. In this intermediate vessel the expansion water is System water flows from the installation into the top of the intermediate vessel. The hot water mixes in the vessel with the cold water already in the vessel. From the bottom of the vessel, significantly cooler water is fed into the expansion vessel. The temperature of the expansion water that is supplied to the Flexcon expansion tank remains under the maximum temperature permissible for the membrane. allowed to cool. The maximum supply temperature of the water for Flexcon VSV vessels is 160 C. The extent to which the expansion water is cooled depends on the volume of the intermediate vessel. An intermediate vessel must not be insulated. Around the vessel and between the vessel and the ceiling there must be clearance of at least 400 mm. Calculation for a Flexcon VSV intermediate vessel The required volume of a Flexcon VSV intermediate vessel depends on the supply temperature and a percentage of the net expansion volume as per the table below. Supply temperature Flexcon intermediate vessel volume % of the net expansion volume C C C C 60 Example calculation for a Flexcon intermediate vessel Data: - expansion volume = litres - supply temperature (105/95 C) = 105 C Calculation: Required vessel volume = 15% of the expansion volume 15x1.740 = = 261 litres 100 The ideal intermediate vessel is thus the Flexcon VSV 350. Flexcon intermediate vessel connection diagram The intermediate vessel functions according to the principle that hot water is lighter than cold water. As the intermediate vessel is filled with water from the top, the heat will be concentrated there. System water that has been allowed to cool will, due to its greater density, fall and this cooler water will naturally be forced towards the connection on the underside of the expansion vessel. 38 Tomorrow's technology in today's Flamcomat The Flamcomat is a modern, pump-driven pressurisation unit. Important functions are integrated into one compact unit. The Flamcomat consists of a pump unit and a pressureless vessel. This modular expansion system can be expanded with additional vessels and accessories from our comprehensive range. In this way we can tailor your equipment precisely to the needs of your system. Steel vessel at atmospheric pressure. Flexvent Super floatvent with aer-intake preventor. Touch pad control panel. Flexible hoses. Twin pump configuration. Lockshield ball valves with drain. FLAMCOMAT Benefits to you The Flamcomat combines pressure-control unit, dynamic de-aeration and topping-up all in one. Choice of a range of pump modules. Proven de-aeration results, as tested independently by WL / Delft Hydraulics. Expansion fluid is stored at atmospheric pressure in a removable butyl-rubber bladder. 40
39 Pressurisation equipment 2 The Flamcomat is suitable for any size heating installation and for both refrigeration and airconditioning installations. The Flamcomat makes sure that the system pressure remains within precise limits and that the system is topped-up automatically should there be any requirements. The venting process is incorporated, dynamic and energy-efficient. Removable diaphragm of high-quality butyl-rubber. Gas-rich water from the system. De-aerated water to the system. PALL RINGS FLAMCOMAT VESSEL Active de-aeration By using an integrated PALL ring box it is possible to de-aerate the installation continuously and completely. The Turbo-vent function significantly increases the de-aeration capacity. 41
40 The Flamcomat is a versatile expansion equipment with high technical performance. The de-aeration capacity is not dependent on the circulation speed or the pressure in the system In systems with a large difference between summer and winter operation, we recommend using a Flamcomat. 41 bar bar Pressurisation equipment 2 How the automat works 5. Topping-up If the water level in the vessel drops to a critical level, an appropriate amount of water will be carefully pumped into the system from the water mains. This water will be de-aerated (by pressure loss and the PALL rings), before entering the vessel. 1. Cold The automat contains a small amount of water. The automat is still at rest. 2. Warming up The volume of water, and the system pressure, increases. The unit responds to this by opening the solenoïd valve. Water flows into the pressureless vessel. The water in the vessel is de-aerated due to both the drop in pressure and the presence of the PALL rings. 4. Cooling down The volume of water, and the system pressure, decreases. The de-aerated water is pumped from the pressureless vessel back into the system. This restores the system pressure Full power When the system has warmed up completely, the vessel will be almost full to capacity C 43
42 Calculation for expansion equipment Basic concepts for the calculation of expansion equipment To select the right expansion appliance, it is necessary to understand the following principles: Static height This is the height of the system, between the connection of the Flexcon expansion equipment and the highest point, measured in water column metres (1 wcm = 0.1 barg). System water capacity If unknown it is based on 12 l/kw. Increase in water volume (in %) The table below shows data on the water volume increase in percentage points when the temperature of the water increases by between 10 C and 110 C. Expansion volume The expansion volume is determined in the following way: expansion volume = capacity x increase in volume at the average heating temperature. Example: heating temperature 90/70 C (average 80 C) = 2.89%. Power capacity This is the sum of the nominal capacity [kw]. Capacity of the Flamcomat pump expansion appliance The capacity of a pump expansion appliance is determined in the following way: capacity of expansion appliance = expansion volume / 0.8. The factor of 0.8 is based on the following assumptions: The working capacity of the vessel allows for switching and differentiation. Corrections to tolerances which, according to various standards, are admissible for parts of the system. Note: different selection values apply to cooling systems. 50 Prescor safety valves: a complete range for the safety of your system If you are looking for reliable safety valves, you need look no further than Flamco's Prescor range. The best protection for all sealed heating and chilled systems from overpressure. The Prescor valves are suitable for systems with a capacity of no higher than 580 kw at 3.0 bar. Systems with greater capacity will need the heavy-duty Prescor S. The benefits of Prescor High-quality materials and construction guarantee reliable function when you need it most. If there is a rapid build-up of pressure, the valve will 'pop' open. The pressure can then be discharged quickly. CE conformity mark. The opening pressure of all valves is individually tested 100%. Cap of high-impact plastic. Anti-ageing spring steel prevents the set pressure from drifting. Robust brass housing. The diaphragm prevents moisture and dirt from getting into the moving parts of the safety valve during blowing off. Valve seal of high-quality rubber, heat-resistant to 140 ºC. The hardness of the rubber is adapted to the set pressure of the valve. These properties mean that the valve will not stick to the valve seat. PRESCOR All Prescor safety valves are set to the specified opening pressure during manufacture. This setting cannot be adjusted. It is important to check the requirements for the Prescor valve in advance. When choosing a Prescor safety valve, the capacity shown on the safety valve must exceed the nominal boiler capacity. The set pressure and maximum output for which the valve is suitable are indicated on the valve. Mount on the boiler, or as close as possible to it, in the supply line. Never fit a stopcock between the boiler and the valve. 52
51 Accessories for heating and chilled systems 3 Prescor S safety valves With connection dimensions of 1 1 /4" up to and including 2", these valves are the ideal safeguard for larger systems. More than one Prescor S safety valve may be fitted to a system so that it can meet the required capacity if the applicable regulations allow. When commissioning a system, it is advisable to flush the pipelines first. As with bleeding, this must never be done using the Prescor S safety valve. The system must be depressurised before the Prescor valve is fitted. Prescomano: a handy Flexcon safety valve and Flexcon pressure gauge in one. Handle for manually testing the valve. Spring for setting the pressure. This setting is locked. Prescor S type plate showing the set pressure and the maximum boiler capacity for which the valve is suitable. Valve housing made entirely of brass. Diaphragm that protects the spring, preventing water leakage via the spindle. Valve with seal of special rubber. Brass valve seat. Prescor safety valves carry an indication of the maximum boiler capacity for which they are designed. If the system contains more than one boiler or heat source and they can be individually isolated, each heat source must be fitted with a Prescor valve. The applicable regulations under the terms of EN concerning the position of the valve, the execution of discharge pipes, positing of tundish etc. must be followed carefully. PRESCOR S Important points: Never block the discharge opening of a safety valve. Do not use the safety valve to drain the system, de-pressurise it or to bleed it. Always fit a tundish and a drain pipe of a correct diameter. 53
52 Safety valves Price band C Flamco safety valves have a special design, which not only achieves a perfect seal, but also a large discharge capacity. The valve seal is made of high-quality rubber, which is heat resistant to 140 C, and where the hardness of the rubber is adjusted to the set pressure of the safety valve. In this way, the valve cannot stick to the seat. Al valves are tested before they leave our facility and are available for heating, chilled and airconditioning installations. 62 The solution for hydraulic imbalance in central heating installations Increasingly, heating installations are fitted with several boilers. As a result, individual boilers can be switched on or off, depending on the heating requirements. In addition, there are often multiple sub-systems fitted with individual pumps. With these systems, there is a chance of hydraulic imbalance, which will lead to poor heat transfer, overloading of pumps and a system that is difficult to stabilise. Using a FlexBalance hydraulic balancer prevents this problem and improves the efficiency of the system. Cone-shaped air chamber. Area where the air is collected. Supply connections. Steel body. Cage with PALL rings for air (top) and dirt (bottom) separation. Drainage tap for removing pollutions that are heavier than water. Return connections. Area where the dirt particles are collected. FLEXBALANCE PLUS How a hydraulic balancer works By fitting a FlexBalance balance vessel, the primary and secondary circuits are connected and a balance is maintained between the various flow speeds. The flow in the primary and secondary circuits stays independent in all situations. The flows in both sub-circuits are not influenced in any way. Schematic illustration of a system with several boilers and pumps 64
63 Accessories for heating and chilled systems 3 FlexBalance hydraulic balancer benefits No more overloaded pumps. More accurate regulation of the system is possible. Considerably improved warmth transference. Higher output by the system. Two extra FlexBalance functions FlexBalance hydraulic balancers must be placed between the primary and secondary circuits to balance out both circuits. This is also the perfect place for air and dirt separation: With the high temperature water flowing through the supply connections, this is the best possible point for air separation. Dirt separation takes place in the return connection, behind the radiators, and immediately before the boiler, thus protecting it from dirt. bar(g) kpa Flow resistance FlexBalance bar(g) kpa Flow resistance FlexBalance Plus Pressure loss [kpa - bar] Pressure loss [kpa - bar] Flow [m³/h] Flow [m³/h] PALL ring technology benefits Instead of using perforated plates (FlexBalance) for air and dirt seperation, the FlexBalance Plus uses our patented PALL ring technology, which has the following benefits: Shorter distance between supply and return connections possible. Even the smallest micro-bubbles and dirt particles are separated. Reduced flow-rate prevents heat exchange between the cold return water and the hot supply water. Considerably greater thermal yield than other hydraulic balancers on the market. 65

70 Airfix A/D: Flamco s Kiwa certified expansion vessels Altogether, UK households lose many hundred million litres of drinking water every year due to expansion water slowly dripping away into the sewer. The Airfix A and Airfix D expansion vessels operate such that the water flows right through and they are continuously flushed with fresh water from the mains. This prevents tepid, stagnant water from collecting in the vessel in which bacterial growth could occur. The Airfix expansion vessel has a KIWA label, and therefore it may be used in drinking water installations. The water and nitrogen side of the vessel are epoxy coated, so that the water cannot come into contact with bare steel. C E R T I F I E D The Airfix A vessel comes equipped with a plastic flow divider, suitable for T-pieces, for a continuous stream of max ¾" (22 mm). This flow divider is placed in the T-piece (which does not come with the vessel). AIRFIX A Benefits of using Airfix A and Airfix D Easy mounting. Fitted with a corrosion-resistant plastic coating inside and out, both on the water side and the nitrogen side. Diaphragm and coating do not add any colour, odour or taste to the water. Can be used in combination with any storage boiler system. Can also be used in pressure boosting systems. Fitted with special rubber diaphragm (EPDM). The vessel must be installed in the supply line and a throughflow must be confirmed. 72
71 Potable water expansion vessels 4 Designed for quality and safety When using an Airfix A or Airfix D expansion vessel, a pressure reducing valve must always be installed, in order to guarantee a constant supply pressure and, therefore, proper flow from the expansion vessel. In addition, a Prescor inlet combination or a combination of an isolating valve, a controllable relief valve and a Prescor B boiler valve must be installed. PRESCOR INLET COMBINATION PRESCOR B BOILER VALVE Special rubber diaphragm and vessel coating have been internationally approved for use in combination with drinking water, in accordance with CE regulation 2002/16/EG. Airfix D vessels use a specially supplied T-piece, with a throughflow design via an internal divider, to ensure complete through-flow of the vessel. Reliable clamping ring construction that does not damage the vessel or the diaphragm. All Airfix A and Airfix D vessels are white in colour. Internal coating prevents rust formation, even in the event of moisture. AIRFIX D 73
72 Calculation for Airfix vessels for mains-water systems Basic concepts for the calculation of an expansion vessel in a mains-water system The following concepts are important in selecting the right vessel: System water capacity The total capacity of the boiler system. Increase in water volume (in %) The table below shows data on the water volume increase in percentage points when the temperature of the water increases by between 10 C and 70 C. Increase in temperature Increase in volume C 0.75% C 1.18% C 1.68% C 2.25% Expansion volume The expansion volume is determined in the following way: expansion volume = capacity x increase in volume at the maximum temperature. Fill level The pressure of the water supply when cold must be 0.2 bar(g) above the initial pressure of the expansion vessel; otherwise, as the vessel cooled down the total water capacity would not be pushed out of the expansion vessel. That is why there must always be a residual amount of water in the vessel at the lowest operating pressure. This is called the fill level. Initial pressure of the vessel This must be 0.2 bar(g) under the pressure of the water supplied when cold. Residual factor 1 - fill level: This determines the residual factor of the expansion vessel. Output This is an expression of the ratio between gross and net vessel capacity. Cold water supply pressure - Initial pressure I = fill level Cold water supply pressure This means that the residual factor of the vessel can be determined. Residual factor = 1 - fill level. The end pressure must be 10% lower than the set pressure of the safety valve. The output is calculated using the formula below: End Cold water pressure - supply pressure II x residual factor = output End pressure Note: pressure in bar absolute The maximum permissible output for the Airfix D-E/D- E-B vessels is 60% (0.60), while for the A and D vessels it is 63% (0.63). End pressure This is the maximum permissible pressure of the system at the vessel itself. The end pressure is equal to 90% of the set pressure of the Prescor boiler valve or the Prescor inlet assembly if it is mounted at the same level as the vessel. Gross vessel capacity The gross capacity of the vessel is determined in the following way: expansion volume gross capacity of the vessel = output 74
73 Potable water expansion vessels 4 Example calculation of expansion vessels for mains-water systems Data - water capacity of the boiler = 150 litres - maximum water temperature = 70 C - cold water supply pressure = 4 bar(g) - safety valve set pressure = 8 bar(g) - vessel initial pressure (4-0.2) = 3.8 bar(g) - end pressure (mean) = 7.2 bar(g) Initial vessel pressure = Cold water supply pressure bar(g) = 3.8 End pressure (mean) = Set pressure of safety valve x 90% = 7.2 bar(g). Calculation Increase in volume: at 70 ºC is 2.25% = 150 x 2.25 % = 3.4 litres (cold water supply pressure - initial pressure) ( ) - ( ) Fill level: = = 0.04 (cold water supply pressure) ( ) Residual factor: 1 - fill level= = 0.96 (end pressure - cold water supply pressure) ( ) - ( ) Output: x residual factor = x 0.96 = (end pressure) ( ) Required gross capacity of expansion vessel: 3.4 / = 9.1 litres Airfix expansion vessel to select: Airfix A 12/4.0 (adjust initial pressure locally to 3.8 bar(g)). 75
74 Instructions for correct fitting of expansion vessels in hot-water potable systems Where an expansion vessel is used in a potable system, it must always be used in combination with a Prescor inlet assembly or Prescor B boiler valve. The expansion vessel must be fitted in the coldwater line, between the non-return valve and the boiler. The expansion vessel's initial pressure must be lower than the pressure in the cold-water line or the pressure behind a governor. The use of expansion vessels in boiler systems must always comply with the demands of the local water authority. 80 Well-designed Airfix technology offers users significant benefits Diaphragm pressure expansion vessels with removable diaphragms are suitable for use in hot water, boosted and water-supply systems. The Airfix D-E expansion vessel can be used in boosted systems either on the suction side or the discharge side of the pumps. These systems are designed to prevent low pressures and changes in pressure at low flow rates. AIRFIX D-E-B AIRFIX D-E-L AIRFIX D-E Airfix D-E Flow through design. The two-way flanged system connection is directly connected to the flow of the mains water line. Airfix D-E-B For domestic, process or extinguishing systems, with a steel single threaded connection as standard Airfix D-E-L Streamlined flow-through diaphragm pressure expansion vessel for use in pressurising, water supply and drinkingwater systems. Benefits of using the Airfix D-E Vessel through-flow. Low pressure drop. The standard diaphragm-rupture sensor may be configured for remote-control read-out. Easy to install, with a long service life. 82
81 Potable water expansion vessels 4 The Airfix D-E is sturdy, reliable and easy to install. The Airfix D-E is a through-flow vessel with two flanged connections and is equipped with a removable butyl-rubber diaphragm. The Airfix D-E is fitted with an electronic diaphragmrupture sensor as standard and has an internallycoated steel through-flow flange. Pressure gauge with self-sealing reducer, vessel connection Rp 3 /8 DIN Diaphragm-rupture sensor, red LED light to indicate diaphragm rupture. Normal permissible initial gas pressure in delivery condition: 6 bar. Airfix D-E vessels have a green external coating. Two-way connection for the system pipework. AIRFIX D-E The Airfix D-E expansion vessel collects the water in its butyl-rubber diaphragm. Should the system pressure rise (when the pump starts up or water is no longer being drawn off) the vessel will take in water which will collect in the diaphragm; should the system pressure drop (if water is drawn off), this water will be recirculated into the draw off line. The flow rate through the vessel is coupled with a minimal loss of pressure. 83
82 Airfix expansion vessel calculation for pressure boosting sets (mains water) The system can be used for the following applications: a. In small independent mains-water systems which draw water from an aquifer or well. b. in systems which, although they are connected to a water main, are so far from a pumping station or water tower that pressure must be boosted locally. The pressure expansion vessel is used to maintain uniform pressure in the system in combination with a pressure switch that activates and deactivates the pump. If the pressure expansion vessel in question has a greater capacity than required for the aforementioned use, it can also be used as a storage vessel. In this respect, the pump does not have to be activated when small amounts are removed by the system, increasing the pump's overall service life. The cut-in pressure of the pressure switch should preferably be set 0.2 bar(g) higher than the expansion vessel's initial pressure. The cut-in pressure for a expansion vessel with 3.0 bar(g) initial pressure is therefore 3.2 bar(g). Selecting the appropriate Airfix expansion vessel Two factors play an important role in the choice of an expansion vessel. The first consideration is the total flow requirements of the system. This determines the pump capacity, which can be used as the basis for the calculation. The second factor of importance is the time the pump needs to top up the expansion vessel from minimum to maximum pressure. 84
83 Potable water expansion vessels 4 The size of the pressure expansion vessel can be calculated using the following formula: Q u + Q i p u + 1 p i + 1 V = x = x x x t 2 p u p i p v + 1 This formula uses the following parameters: V = capacity of the pressure expansion vessel in litres. Q u = pump output at cut-out pressure in m 3 /h. Q i = pump output at cut-in pressure in m 3 /h. p u = pressure switch cut-out pressure in bar (abs.). p i = pressure switch cut-in pressure in bar (abs.). p v = initial pressure of the pressure expansion vessel in bar (abs.). t = time in seconds during which the vessel can be drained without the pump cutting in. If V is between the capacity values of two pressure expansion vessels, the larger of the two must always be selected. If the smaller pressure expansion vessel is selected, the switching frequency of the pump will increase significantly which, in turn, will have an adverse effect on the pump's service life. If you need to discharge small amounts of water often without the pump cutting in, choose a greater value for time; the value of V, the capacity of the pressure expansion vessel will, accordingly, rise too. The pressure expansion vessel will then also work as a storage vessel. In this situation, we recommend using a flow-through Airfix vessel. For larger capacity vessels it is possible to connect more than one pressure expansion vessel in parallel. Instructions on how to install pressure expansion vessels for potable appliances in pressure boosting sets Stopcock Stopcock Airfix D-E Gas fill valve/ inspection connection Non-return valve Pump Reducer valve Pressure switch PS Pressure gauge Non-return valve Pressure gauge Control valve Non-return valve Stop cock Airfix A/D Pump Drain cock Non-return valve To the system Mains water systems, particularly those which draw water from an aquifer or well, have relatively high levels of air. Thus, the pressure expansion vessel must be fitted so that there is no chance of an 'air cushion' forming at the diaphragm. The pressure expansion vessel is filled with a controlled throughput. We recommend fitting a pressure regulator. 85

108 Air in central-heating systems Air in a central-heating system leads to: Irritating noise. Loss of heat from radiators. Corrosion. Damage to the circulation pump. Reduced system service life. Increased energy consumption. Higher maintenance costs. Possible causes of air in central-heating systems To prevent or get rid of air problems in a system, it is important to understand the causes: Air in the system prior to filling. Air enters the system during filling. Air in the water with which the system is filled. Air dissolved in the system water. C Normal dm³ air per 1,000 kg of water T Temperature [ C] 0 P Pressure [bar (g)] The presence of dissolved air in water can be explained through Henry's law. This says: C = K x P C = concentration of the dissolved air K = absorption factor (depending on the temperature) P = pressure As the diagram shows, the air that can be dissolved in the water depends on both the temperature and the pressure. When the temperature increases or the pressure drops, dissolved air in the water is released. 110
109 Air and dirt separation 7 Henry's law in a central-heating system Very high temperatures can occur at the boiler walls. Aerated water can release tiny bubbles here. These 'micro-bubbles' dissipate in other parts of the centralheating system at low temperatures if they are not removed immediately. If the micro-bubbles are immediately removed behind the boiler, the system water is free of air (unsaturated). Air from other parts of the system can dissolve and be absorbed by this water. This absorption effect can be exploited to coalesce all the free air in a system and help the air out of the system with the boiler/flamcovent absorption air separator combination. This venting procedure is a process that continues until only unsaturated water, which can absorb more air remains. Air volume [dm³] released from 1,000 kg water Air volume [dm³] released from 1,000 kg water T T Temperature [ C] [ C] Air volume [dm³] released from 1,000 kg water Air volume [dm³] released from 1,000 kg water T T Temperature [ C] [ C] P P Pressure [bar [bar (g)] (g)] P P Pressure [bar [bar (g)] (g)] Henry's law allows us to calculate how much dissolved air will be released from the water if it is heated up, for example from 20 C to 80 C. If the pressure decreases or the temperature increases, dissolved air will escape. If the temperature decreases or the pressure increases, air bubbles will be absorbed by the water. 111
110 The best air separator in every situation The mode of operation of the Flamcovent is based on a special process of separating gases from fluid (water). The benefits of Flamcovent: Even the smallest micro-bubbles adhere to the PALL rings, separating them from the system water. The air chamber is conical, so the greatest possible distance can be maintained between the water level and the vent valve. The vent valve with regulating screw can be shut off. Transmission mechanism. Air chamber. Vent valve. Float gauge. Housing (brass). Cover plate. Emergency stop PALL rings. Mode of operation The water flows through and around each of the PALL rings so that each gaseous particle comes into contact with the surface of the PALL ring, to which it will adhere. The flow rate of the water decreases as a consequence of the rise in the discharge cross-section. Air bubbles can rise through it to the air chamber. The float gauge, float mechanism and vent valve remove air that has been separated from the water in the system. 112
111 Air and dirt separation 7 Flamcovent Solar In solar thermal systems, steam (vapour) may arise due to the high temperatures involved. If a floatvent is in direct communication with the vapour, the float will not close off the vent (i.e. the vent floats on the water, not the vapour). The Flamcovent Solar is a type of through-flow air separator in which the vent head cannot be disconnected from the system. That is why the Flamcovent Solar has a manual vent, so the system will not boil dry when vapour is created. 112 Determining the appropriate size of Flamcovent The information below is applicable to heating and cooling systems. The effectiveness of the Flamcovent air separator depends on the speed of water flowing through the system. For the best results, Flamco advises a flow speed of between 0.5 and 1 m/s, assuming the Flamcovent is installed in the right place in the system (with the lowest pressure and the highest temperature). Even at flow speeds of between 1 and 1.5 m/s, the vent s function is still adequate. Higher speeds (above 1.5 m/s) are not recommended. In such cases, a Flamcovent with a greater connection diameter should be used with adapters, in order to reduce the water speed inside the Flamcovent. 2" Connection 1½" 1¼" 1" ¾" v=0,5 m/s v=1 m/s v=1,5 m/s v=3 m/s Flow (m 3 /h) Connection v=0,5 m/s v=1 m/s v=1,5 m/s v=3 m/s Flow (m 3 /h) Flamcovent flow rate V = 1.0 m/s max. speed at the lowest point of the system. V = 1.5 m/s max. speed at the highest point of the system. 114
113 Air and dirt separation 7 The air chamber of the Flamcovent is conical in shape. The advantage of this construction is that the distance (A) between the water level and the vent valve is larger than with a straight air chamber. This means that there is little chance of pollution WATER A WATER A Flamcovent air separators outperform other air separators Research at the Delft Technical University has shown that Flamcovent air separators remove all micro-bubbles from 15 µm. This is three times better than comparable air separators. You will find the report at Size of air bubbles (µm) Flamcovent valve Regular vent valve 10 0 Flamcovent Air separator B In order to vent the system in the best possible way, the Flexair or Flamcovent air separator must be fitted immediately behind the boiler or tempering valve in the supply line. 114 Flamco Dual Zone Flow Diversion Systems in which the water is sufficiently de-aerated and free of dirt of all kinds give a better yield, produce less noise and have an improved service life. Good reasons to opt for Flamco's innovative solutions. Research carried out at the University of Antwerp shows that our air separators remove all microscopic air-bubbles from 15 µm and larger and all dirt particles between 15 and 200 µm (normal spectrum of particles in a HVAC system). Unequalled air and dirt separation 116
115 Air and dirt separation 7 Significant benefits and high output Superior performance The performance of our wide range of dirt separators can also be called best in their field. Apart from airbubbles, dirt particles such as grains of sand, bits of metal and paint or tape residue flow through every system. They can cause rust, blockages and compromised output. The consequences could prove costly. Such problems can be prevented. Our extensive new range of brass or steel dirt separators with welded, flanged or grooved connections offers you the best result for any situation. The function of Dual Zone Flow Division has been extensively tested by the University of Antwerp in Belgium. Seperation efficiency (%) Flamco A B D Dirt separation efficiency Separation efficiency (%) Flamco A B C Air separation efficiency DN50, values at 1 m/s Particle size of magnetite (µm) DN50, values at 0.5 m/s Micro bubble (µm) Minimal loss of pressure If you want to remove both dirt and air from your system, Flamco's new inventions are just the ticket. Our easy-to-install device for separation of air and dirt from the system water is undeniably the best conceivable solution with minimal pressure loss and thus also saves on energy use. The advantages of Dual Zone Flow Division: Maximum separation of air and dirt. Better yield and a longer service life. Supreme performance and minimal loss of pressure. Extensive range for the home and office. Innovative, economical and energy efficient. 117
116 Three technologies in one Flamco's patented Dual Zone Flow Diversion unites all existing technologies to separate air and dirt particles from system water: coalescence, reduction of the flow speed and pressure reduction under the influence of coalescence, micro-bubbles attach themselves to metal and other surfaces; lowering the flow speed of system water allows air-bubbles to rise and a drop in pressure releases gases dissolved in fluid (Henry's Law). The combination of these three technologies, combined with optimum system flow, guarantees the best possible result. 118
117 Air and dirt separation 7 How does it work? There is a square basket with partitions fitted in the separator. The PALL rings in the basket have a relatively large surface area, so that even microbubbles of 15 μm can adhere to them. Dirt particles that are heavier than water sink to the bottom of the unit. In the rest zone, the micro-bubbles can grow and rise to be removed by the automatic de-aerator. For dirt that remains floating in the water there is a blow-off cock fitted under the automatic de-aerator, while bigger dirt particles can be removed via a tap on the bottom of the unit. All this happens with the minimum loss of pressure. V+ / P- V- / P+ Step 1 Because the basket's corners are at an angle to the flow direction, the system water is split at the inlet. The water that is forced against the basket causes the pressure inside the basket to rise. Step 2 The difference in pressure (higher in the basket and lower in the separate streams) means that when the pressure drops, a slow secondary stream will flow from the basket over the edges of the partitions and back into the quicker main stream. Step 3 The water in the basket is fed along all surfaces of the PALL rings. Micro-bubbles and dirt are led to the rest zones by the slow secondary stream. The flow area on the way to the rest zones becomes increasingly large, while the pressure drops. - + FLOW (FRONT) - 119

When the floatvent is unscrewed from the shut-off valve, the valve will close automatically. Under normal circumstances, the Flexvent floatvent needs no maintenance. However, if it does need removing, the system need not be de-pressurized or drained, thanks to the shut-off valve on most Flexvent models. Due to the particularly compact dimensions of the floatvent, it is possible to install a Flexvent floatvent in those places in the system where air collects. Protective cap including expansion sealer rings to prevent leaks. Substantial distance between the water and the closing mechanism, reducing the chance of contamination. Most Flexvent floatvents are made of brass. The Flexvent H has a ½" right-angled connection which means it can be mounted directly on one of the radiator sockets. Mostly supplied standard with a shut-off valve for easy removal. Flexvent Automatic Air Vents The float floats on the water and keeps the venting valve closed. When air is collected in the floatvent, the water level will drop and the venting valve will be opened. The collected air will escape, causing the water level to rise and the venting valve to close. This process continues as long as air is collected in the floatvent during operation. The air cushion in the upper part of each Flexvent protects the valve seat against contamination. LTA air pots The Flamco air pot is mounted on rising pipes in the supply or return lines. In the air pot the water returns to a non-turbulent state and the air it brought with it can collect in the upper part. The air can be bled from the Flexvent mounted on top of the air pot. 122

The graph shows the relationship between the amount of air in litres/min at 15 C and the system pressure. Flexvent Super The cap of the Flexvent Super is conical in shape. The advantage of this construction is that the clearance between the water level and venting valve is at its greatest. The air-escape duct can be opened or closed with an adjusting screw. The venting valve forms an integral part of the cap, so that it is impossible to damage the floatvent mechanism from outside. 123
122 Flexvent floatvents Price band C and D The compact proven design has high efficiency and guaranteed operation for heating and air conditioning. The water within the installation contains air which can form corrosion and reduce the thermal transfer. A Flexvent is fitted at places where the air collects. Float operated, the air is collected in the Flexvent causing the float to drop and open the air release valve. When the air is eliminated the float rises and closes the valve. 127 Air and dirt separation 7 Pressure Step Degasser Pressure Step Degasser Exceptional deaeration performance with compact and robust design, taking up minimal space. The PSD is a differential pressure deaeration unit (Pressure Step Degasser). System fluid is sampled from the system, isolated and subjected to a full vacuum. All dissolved air within the sample is liberated, in accordance with Henry s Law and vented to atmosphere. The deaerated fluid is then reintroduced to the system. This process is automatically repeated and controlled with a digital processor. A turbo mode is available for initial system setup, to allow for rapid deaeration of new installations. The real-time display shows the status of the mechanical components. A common alarm volt free contact is included within the PSD control unit for remote indication of a fault. 128 8. Flamco T-plus The T-plus is an ideal product for the expansion, conversion or overhaul of an existing system. No longer is it necessary to isolate, drain, de-pressurise or freeze a pipe when an extra branch is required. The new branch can be fitted in seconds, even in hard-to-reach places. Time is money and installers will immediately appreciate the difference that T-plus makes. There are three models in the Flamco range (steel, copper and copper with integral ball valve) which can be used with a wide range of tubes and pipes for water, air and other non-flammable media. 130
129 Flamco T-plus 8 131
130 Flamco T-Plus Flamco T-plus is useful for expanding, converting or renovating existing systems and is unrivalled in its installation speed and ease of branches in existing piping systems. Even in places which are difficult to access, you can use Flamco T-plus without any problems. Flamco T-plus can also be used in systems that have to remain operative round the clock. Expensive down-time can be avoided, so for example working on a heating system in winter is not a problem. With Flamco T-plus, you can optimise your service and your work will be finished significantly quicker. Branch Pin Charge Piston Cut out section of pipe Existing pipe Flamco T-plus is particularly useful in: Central heating systems. Potable installations. Fire extinguishers. Industrial systems of all kinds, for instance compressed air systems. Advantages The installation of Flamco T-plus can be carried out at any time. The system does not need to be de-pressurized, emptied, refilled and vented. 132
131 Flamco T-plus 8 How it works This is how the Flamco T-plus works Piston There is a cutting piston in the Flamco T-plus housing. Ignition When the pin is hit, the charge will ignite. Cutting the pipe The pressure that is created propels the cutting piston forwards and partially cuts open the pipe. Cut away section of pipe The cut-out section of the pipe is retained between the piston and the wall of the Flamco T-plus housing and can therefore not enter the pipe. In addition to the Flamco T-plus for steel pipes, there is a T-plus for thin-walled steel pipes, stainless steel pipes and copper pipes (see right). The cast-iron Flamco T-plus is suitable for steel pipes from ½" up to and including 3". The brass Flamco T-plus is suitable for thin-walled steel pipes, stainless steel pipes and copper pipes with a diameter between 14 mm and 42 mm. The 42 mm version is not suitable for use with stainless steel piping. Flamco T-plus is not suitable for use in areas containing flammable materials. This includes areas where there is a fire or explosion hazard. 133

Flexvent Top Solar Float shut-off valve for closed, intrinsically safe solar energy installations. Operating temperature: -30 C to 180 C. The Prescor Solar characteristics: Solid brass body. The valve is made of high-quality rubber, eliminating the possibility of sticking. Diaphragm protects the inside from dirt and calcification. With special spring from high quality material, so no change in spring tension occurs when aging. Button for releasing the valve is made of unbreakable plastic. FLEXVENT TOP SOLAR Flamco Solar Air Vent Range For a safe efficient method of air removal from solar systems use the Flamco Solar Air Vent Range. The Flamco Solar Air Vents are used in renewable energy applications. The air vents are designed for manually operated vents, to allow greater control of the fluid pressure within the system. With traditional automatic air vents, the release of liberated air can result in a drop in system pressure. With solar systems there is a real risk of the solar fluid turning to vapour in the event of a pressure drop. To prevent this the Solar Air Vents have a manual bleed valve for the removal of the accumulated air. Flamcovent Solar Flamcovent Solar en Flamcovent Solar V air separators remove even the smallest microbubbles from the water. Flamcovent Solar benefits: Solid brass body. The PALL-rings, made of stainless steel, have a very large surface area for an efficient de-aeration process. The venting valve can be closed off with an adjusting screw. Suitable for high temperatures. 151
150 Enair-G-Flow domestic solutions Innovative renewable solutions, utilising an Air Source Heat Pump (ASHP) and a Stainless Steel unvented hot water cylinder (Calorifier). The Enair-G-Flow system uses a hot water cylinder (Calorifiers) as a dual purpose thermal store. The ASHP heats the domestic hot water, a secondary coil in the water tank acts as a heat exchange to feed the radiator and/or underfloor circuits. The Enair-G-Flow system also relies on a dual temperature principle for the central heating. A Setback control option allows the Occupier/ Property Management to maintain the fabric of the building at a comfort temperature level. By maintaining a minimum temperature, it is also possible to reduce the main demand on the system and in turn costs. The ASHP system makes innovative use of a renewable energy source. Typically ASHP technology provides a good return on energy used, however it is limited in response time and peak demand. The Enair-G-Flow system removes the peak demand and uses the ASHP at its most efficient. When the central heating demand starts to drain the heat energy from the cylinder, the two coils are hydraulically linked creating a thermal boost for the heating, whilst still recharging the cylinder as priority. In this way, the ASHP is always provided with preheated water, rather than cold, allowing it to work within its optimum performance range. 152
151 Renewables and Sustainable 11 Benefits: Variable air heat source inputs (5,12 and 18 kw) and thermal storage options (210, 250, 300 and 500 litres). Should any goods appear defective owing to faulty materials or manufacture, they must be returned to us for examination. If we (acting reasonably) agree they are defective, we shall replace them. Unless such notification is received, the goods will be deemed to have arrived in good condition and we shall not be liable upon and shall have the right to reject any claim in respect of any such damage, loss, shortage or non-receipt of goods. 13. If the buyer uses or sells the products in such manner as to infringe any patent rights, we shall not be responsible for such infringements and the buyer agrees to indemnify us from and against all liability arising therefrom. 14.
