CL20 Rear Door Heat Exchanger RDHx RDHx Principle Fitted to the rear of the cabinet the standard CL20 RDHx (or Retrofit CL20 RDHx) houses a large cooling coil and is fitted with six variable speed controlled centrifugal fans providing precision cooling over the entire rear face of the cabinet. Working in harmony with the air-conditioning system the CL20 doors take the brunt of the heat load, creating an efficient and robust solution. The simple and effective concept of removing heat directly at source ensures there is no recirculation of hot air in the data centre; this combined with using water as the cooling medium (which is 3500 times more effective than air by volume) the CL20 RDHx saves energy costs whilst ensuring a stable, safe and chilled rack environment. Features 22kW Nominal Cooling Capacity (35kW nominal available upon request) Available in 42U and 48U, 600w and 800w Precision Cooling Six protected & monitored hot swap fans Thermally controlled fan speed RDHx available in three monitoring levels. Built in Redundancy Optional remote monitoring and administration Optional protocol conversion Retro-fit to any already installed competition rack Condensate free operation No need for Drip Tray Unique styling 2

Coil How it works Equipment exhaust air onto the RDHx Exit air returns into the data centre at ambient temperature. Ambient air on to cabinet The coil is positioned to remove heat directly at source Flow and return flexible hoses are connected to each RDHx and in turn are connected to the chilled water system. All hoses used are manufactured to BSRIA BG4/2004 standard with a pressure rating of 20 bar and burst pressure test of 53bar, with a typical operating pressure of 1.5 to 2bar 3

CL20 RDHx Interface Frame Data Centre managers who recognize the benefits of cooling with a ColdLogik Cabinet might sometimes be restricted to their use by legacy cabinets within their Data Centre. The CL20 RDHx Interface frame eliminates this as an issue as it can be designed to fit suitable data cabinets to allow a CL20 Door to be fitted onto the existing cabinet. An example of a CL20 RDHx door fitted to an IBM Enterprise cabinet. 4

The ideal is to make these improvements to new and existing data centres by reducing energy, operational and running costs, while increasing efficiencies and revenue from expensive floor space. Of course a reduction of our carbon footprint is beneficial to us all but can this still be achieved without impacting on productivity or space saving? Currently for example most data centres under populate their server cabinets due to overheating issues, at a time when floor space is at a premium it can often mean potential loss to additional revenue streams. Alas no single product can achieve the solution to these problems; however the CL20 Series combined with a few other key products can overcome most scenarios and produce a coherent cooling solution which would allow data centres to successfully become more efficient. The basic version of the CL20 Series can dissipate up to 18kW of heat with the advanced version offering up to 40kW of heat dissipation using sensible cooling only, illustrating just how the CL20 series increases the potential of maximising each cabinet s population without the usual fear of overheating. The CL20 RDHx used in conjunction with an integrated solution is probably one of the few key components available capable of achieving this objective. 5

Nett Cooling (kw) CL20 RDHx Performance CL20 Rear Door Heat Exchanger Cooling Duty Independently tested, the standard CL20 RDHx 42U 600w version has a nominal heat dissipation of 22kW Water 10 Deg C Water 14 Deg C Water 18 Deg C 35 Deg C 40 Deg C 45 Deg C 50 Deg C Server Exit Temp However, depending upon the water inlet temperature and the temperature rise CL20 RDHx can achieve in excess of 30kW.pau CL20 RDHx Energy Savings Saving energy has become of paramount concern in most organisations, especially when it comes to data centres. Increasingly, they are coming under the spotlight as an area where big improvements can and must be made. The drive is not just to reduce costs but increase efficiencies within existing infrastructures. Historically most data centres under populate their server cabinets due to overheating issues, at a time when floor space is of a premium it can often mean potential loss to additional revenue streams. Alas no single product can provide all the answers to this problem, more likely a number of products coming together to produce a coherent cooling solution which would allow data centres to successfully streamline themselves. The CL20 RDHx used in conjunction with an integrated solution is probably one of the key components capable of achieving this objective. Sited directly where the heat source is generated, the CL20 ensures optimum efficiency. Using water as the medium to remove exhaust heat is far more effective than using air alone. The barrier formed by the door guarantees zero re-circulation of exhaust air and in turn prevents cold air mixing with hot air in the data centre. The fans fitted to the CL20 are governed by a fan speed controller which is linked to a heat sensor; ensuring that the fans run at their optimum speed to suit the temperature emitting from the equipment. Thanks to these efficiencies it is calculated that using CL20 RDHx s as a part of an integrated solution will save approximately 24% energy normally used by computer room air-conditioning units when working alone, in addition to increasing capacity within the server cabinet without overheating concerns. 6

Leak Prevention System Naturally one of the major concerns of using a water filled coil directly by the equipment is the possibility of leakage, even though it is universally recognised that the likelihood of such an occurrence is remote, the fear is still there. Tank To overcome this problem the manufacturer has incorporated a patent pending Leak Prevention System LPS. This system is totally unique in the field of data centres and provides complete peace of mind against leakage concerns. Pump Instead of pushing the chilled water throughout the system in a conventional fashion the LPS reverses the flow and sucks the water; this is known as negative pressure. By doing so chilled water cannot leak from the RDHx s and just as importantly the general pipe work entering into the data centre including all connections and valves Chiller Exit water temperature is typically 14 C, which can achieve nominally 18kW, 30kW or 40kW per cabinet depending on which RDHx is fitted; however if this level of cooling is not required then even greater efficiency can be achieve. By raising the chilled water temperature from 14ºC to 18ºC, this decreases power requirements by a further 11% plus increasing the level of free cooling available. 19 / 23 C 14 / 18 C Free Cooling Free Cooling reduces the cooling system electrical consumption by up to 88%, this also reduces wear on the refrigeration system and increases component life 7
